So I've always entertained the idea of building a cluster with Raspberry Pi to tinker around with distributed computing, but I've never been able to figure out something to actually do with the cluster. So I'm looking for ideas of what to do with a cluster of Rasperry Pi's. Don't really know how many Pi's I would have in the cluster right now, if I find the whole project interesting enough I may throw a decent amount of money into it. Figuring I'd start with a cluster of about 5-10 Pi3's, and then scale up as needed.

Good question. I picked up a pie2 B and I bought the night camera and a regular camera to do some time lap photos.
Thinking of getting the weather station kit for it.
I too may want to do some BOINC with it, must be good for some project.

Also, what OS would you be looking to run on it? Android wouldn't be ideal for a cluster but individually there would be more supported projects.

Linux, almost certainly Raspbian.

From what I've been reading I'll have to use MPI.

I just have very little knowledge of the type of workloads are applicable to distributed computing, and what hobbyist uses I can use a cluster for.

I have no illusions of building some sort of productive bit coin mining cluster out of $35 computers.

if you want to spend a little less $$$/ghz you should look at the orangepi boards too... been using them for quite a few projects lately

Any experience with odroid ? Somehow I still think to get one or three of them to play with ...

nope, only played with raspberypi (broad spport) and orangepi (cheap) boards... but some of their devices have been quite interesting, just never got around to ordering one

I have a 4 node cluster of raspberry pi 3s i put together a while ago. I put mpich on it and messed around with hp linpack a bit, but have not found anything to really use it for so far. I would say start small and then add on to it as you find something to put it go good use.
