YouTube has announced a number of aesthetic “upgrades” to its service today: while I appreciate the fact that its new desktop design and dark theme is officially available to users around the globe, I am not too sure about the new logo (especially the longer YouTube Red version). On the mobile side, the YouTube app is getting gesture support (i.e., double tap to fast forward or rewind) and an adaptive display, where the player will seamlessly change shape to match video formats.

The bright red cherry on top of this update sundae is a refreshed YouTube Logo and YouTube Icon. Designed for our multi-screen world, the updated Logo combines a cleaned up version of the YouTube wordmark and Icon, creating a more flexible design that works better across a variety of devices, even on the tiniest screens. Why’s it more flexible? When room is limited (say on a smartphone) you can use the brightened up Icon as an abbreviated Logo, which will be seen more easily and read more clearly. You’ll see the new Logo and Icon roll out across mobile and desktop today, and across all our other apps and services soon.

pfft, those fucking little creeps, parasites, so eager to turn their backs on the people who gave them all they are and push their little "agenda" of whatever the fuck it is that goes into their creepy little minds, fuck em.

Youtube app sucks ever since they made it so you can't play a video in the background. Now it says you must have youtube RED subscription.

Yea, this was an optional change a few months or so ago, now is permanent. Hated it then, even more now.

How DARE they perpetuate the harmful stereotype that mobile and desktop are in ANY way different?? REEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I'm not a huge fan of the new interface on desktop. As with so many of their recent UI changes (news, gmail, replacing gchat with hangouts), they seem to be intent on wasting as much screen real estate as possible. Every button/link/menu item has way too much whitespace.

People are starting to move to open platforms because of YT censorship.

I appreciate ventures like that. The problem is, 99% of the videos end up being nothing more than political ranting along the lines of what got them censored from YouTube to begin with. Even if I mostly agree with said politics, it isn't an environment that appeals to more casual folk, limiting the site's potential growth.

Welp. I see that searching your watch history has again gone by the wayside. Probably the one useful feature that made the site decent.

Hell, can't even send feedback. The little window gets insistent upon adding a screen shot when I don't need it, only to hang there doing nothing.

I wanted to send an issue where when you click a notification to see a comment, the video just plays, previously it would auto pause. Don't need the video playing when you're reading comments.

Hate how it no longer tells me when someone replies to one of my trolly comments I made on a video, like really! how am I supposed to feed of the discomfort of others if I can't see how people are affected!!!

Protube app lets you watch in background. It costs something like 3 bucks IIRC.

It shows the upgrade was successful. No more feedback and complaints.

How about the ability to browse videos a couple years old on a channel with a lot of videos besides clicking "Load More" 50+ times?
And having to do it again if you were foolish enough to click on a video.

They've totally killed YouTube on AndroidTV by removing the so-called "branded" accounts. Basically means 5-6 years of subsciptions and history have been wiped. They've also removed the ability to select your resolution or stream at 4K. At the moment on Shield you can uninstall the update, but that's not going to last. SmartTV users are screwed. People are screaming about it, but absolute zero from YouTube in response.

Honestly, I think it's going to be a dead platform within the next 2-3 years. I don't think all this breaking of functionality is by accident, my money's on Alphabet wanting to kill the platform off completely now it's less profitable for them to deliver advertising. Within the next year or so I reckon they'll announce a new, more controlled, product that they can manage the "messaging" more easily. Probably going to be curated.

Yup, I was there when it happened. Was watching Norm Macdonald and I refreshed and there it was. I felt nothing.

When politically benign content creators are displaced too in favor of corporate content (goal of Youtube TV) they will need to find a home.

I stopped watching YouTube because they were censoring and removing the content I enjoy for having the wrong political beliefs. Former senator Ron Paul has wrong think therefore he must be silenced. Though they are still running ads on his videos even though their pathetic justification for this political censorship is that their advertisers don't want to be shown with anyone who *gasp* isn't to the left of Stalin.

In the last few days this awful app has started to spam me with emails to let me know all about the non-censored content I like and the videos they have. They must want me to keep using their shitty anti free speech app. I tried to unsubscribe but they just kept coming five or ten times a day so I spammed them all.

Am I the only one who can't tell what they changed? Logo looks exactly the same as always to me. If anything maybe it looks a bit squished together horizontally, as if someone scaled it down only on one axis.

Stupid waste of effort to change imperceptible and unimportant things. How much did they pay some branding person for this useless work?

Focus on the functionality instead.

I'm too lazy to find it but pewdiepie had a hilarious video that came out at the beginning of their censorship roll out showing how he had a reference to Elsa Frozen in a video so it accidentally got marked "family friendly" and it made like 300% more money so he had a back door way to find out how much censorship was actually costing content creators.

The only thing that really got my attention was the logo - now in bold.
Other than that I would echo your sentiments.
Like an... echo.

Oh God I think I was running a cached version or something. It just changed for me. Subscribe button went to another place and no longer shows the number, the right pane with suggested videos is much wider, the comment box is now a friggin line. It's worse. I would like to retract my previous statement. Oh no.

But the font's better. Crap I don't know.

The inability to group subs is annoying and makes me hate it even more.

How do we stop the damn videos for autoplay when going to them? Jeez.

Yeah, I have figured that much out. When I open up a YT page from a link on another page, is there a way to keep it from autoplaying when I open the new YT page.

Don't use YT for any type of social interaction anymore. Used to have a blast in the comments section back in the day - when you could, you know, ACTUALLY FIND YOUR COMMENT.

Seriously, HOW FUCKING HARD IS IT TO FIND YOUR OWN COMMENT? WHY WAS COMMENT HISTORY REMOVED?

Oh, how about we allow you to filter comments, BUT ONLY ALLOW YOU TO FILTER NEW OR TOP COMMENTS? Who cares about old comments, anyways.

Sorry for the caps. I just had to rage at those imbeciles running the YT show.
