About 2.93 million people streamed the most hyped boxing match this year. Various streams could be found online with 239 for social media users with many "bragging" that they were able to see the fight for free through the apps. Streaming sites had 67 different streams up for viewers. The pay-per-view ran at a cost of $100 just to watch in HD, but pirated users probably experienced the same quality of streams. There was no mention of early stoppages of the streams or if any went down.

Forty-two ads promoting the illegal streams were also found in just one day during the week of the event. The ads were found by Irdeto on e-commerce websites, including Amazon, eBay and Alibaba.

Not surprising in the least. Charging people $100 to see a one-time event is just ridiculous. I would rather spend $100 on some good booze watching the fight at a bar.

The fight was a sham from the getgo and if you think otherwise you're dreaming.

Both Mayweather and McGregor are laughing their way to the bank (if you're Mayweather, to the IRS office). It's like they called each other and said hey how can we make a few hundred million... Oh let's go up to 12 rounds without actually hurting each other too bad. DONE.

Boxing and MMA are dead, no one is marketable anymore. And on the subject of streaming, that's all a sham as well, every provider wants a piece and they all charge X amount. Piecemealing content was a dream now it's just 20 different streaming providers asking for $20-40/m a pop.

Piracy will stick around as long as content is digital, the ease of access is what will scare the big companies and they'll inch and claw their way towards destroying net neutrality to get at the source of the moneypot which is the ability to control the bandwidth. Hopefully it never happens, but it's a scary thought for the future.

Tyson vs Lennox, June 2002
Fed Min Wage: $5.15/hr
PPV Cost: $55

Mayweather vs McGregor, August 2017
Fed Min Wage: $7.25/hr
PPV Cost: $100

Adjusted for inflation, $55 in 2002 is $75 today.

Well there's your problem, networks.

You're forgetting the updated costs of cable (or internet only), plus the price of ground pork, cheese, chips, wings and beer.

Those aren't mandatory items to simply get the fight brought in to the living room. Well, for ME they are, but not for everyone. :D

Wasn't just PPV charging stupid money to watch it. Almost all the bars in Charlotte were charging $20-40 per person for standing room and $100 per person for a table. And these places were PACKED.

where are the execs complaining about pirated streams costing them at least 293m in lost sales?

and they still didn't get their money's worth!

fight was as big of a sham as whatshisfaces last boring 100M$ PPV payday

might as well be at the actual event for that price. Cable/Satellite companies are just a rip off. If ever they go broke, well duh, its called lower you god'em prices.

I almost felt this feeling of care wash over me but then my toe started itching.

Not quite a sham. More like reality TV hits the sportsring...........and makes much more money for the insiders.

daaaamn. $300 million lost. /sarc

They don't mind the pirates because they know they've already made much more than it's worth.

So it's like wrestling. All the shit is a prearranged sham, and all the fans eat it up. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY !

Long live capitalism.

So you would rather pay for flight for those that don't live close to vegas. Then $2000 for crappy seats instead of just paying $100 for a PPV?
