Eddie Tipton, who was suspected of hacking the Iowa offices of the Multi-State Lottery Association was sentenced to 25 years in prison today. Red flags were first raised in 2010 when Tipton tried to collect a 16.5 million Hot Lotto ticket. In addition to Iowa, Tipton admitted to fixing games in Colorado, Wisconsin, Kansas and Oklahoma with the help of his brother and former Texas judge Tommy Tipton and Texas businessman Robert Rhodes. As part of a plea deal, the Tipton brothers are to pay back $3 million in restitution.

Wow, that's a lot of prison time, and not even his last bout of sentencing. The guy probably could have gotten away with it too if he hadn't have gotten greedy. We first covered this in 2015 when he was caught, and it seems it isn't over for him yet.

After his first illegal win in 2005, Tipton launched construction on a 4,800-square-foot home outside of Des Moines that contained a movie theater and gym, overlooked a pond and sat on 22 acres, court documents show. The scam spread to at least six more games across five states, netting more than $2 million, investigators alleged. Tipton admitted his role as part of a plea deal to resolve charges in all the states.

He should of done it once, and invested. 25 years is a long time though.

25 years is a long time, yeah. I would've liked to see him, his brother, and the businessman all serve time and have their assets seized. 10 years, and no assets by the time they get out of jail would have sent a much, much stronger message, I think.

Listen to the judges voice.

He was sentenced to an indeterminate amount of time not to exceed 25 years.

From the article "It's uncertain how many years Tipton will actually spend in prison. He could be paroled within three or four years, his attorneys noted."

He'd get less time if he shot someone. Sentencing is all fucked up.
I see this kind of thing said a lot, and while I understand the sentiment behind it, I think the severity of sentences in cases like this has to do with the greater potential systemic damage the crime does.

I would've gone larger. Do it once and ditch. I suppose the idea was to have a low enough amount and it shouldn't have attracted attention like winning a high triple-digit ticket.

That depends entirely upon who is getting shot, the results of the shooting, and other factors. You simply cannot make blanket statements like that, it is not how the law and sentencing works. I'm sure he broke multiple laws with his actions and did not just break them once. Each offense has its own punishment attached to it.

May he rot

That said lotteries are a tax on the hopes and dreams of the poor. The very people who can afford it the least. (If you look who buys the tickets in the first place)

In Maryland the proceeds benefit the stadium authority. (Last I checked) Let me repeat that, not schools not fire house not the poor, but the f'ing stadium authority who's owned by people who have more money than they know what to do with.

I don't get it, they kept trying to cash in winning tickets anonymously even though Iowa doesn't allow that. And he bought the ticket himself in a convenience store. Idiot !

Maryland is a fucked up state in so many ways I just dont even really want to go into it. I hate this place.

Now I have to go googling about this state, because I always wondered about Maryland (is it a nice place to live, etc).

It depends on your viewpoints and how you like to live your life. Taxes are pretty high compared to other states and the laws are more restrictive.

If you own guns: forget about MD. They are very antigun. You probably own some that are banned here (btw do not ever transport them through MD or you end up in jail if they find out)
If you like to fish: dont do it here. The fisheries are very poor compared to PA or VA and the regulations are much more complicated comparatively.
If you like to hunt: see above, I dont hunt here because they would require me to take a test with one of their (poorly) maintained guns even though I have hunted in other states before. Im not old enough to qualify for their exemption and they wouldnt recognize the other states license.

Outside of a few areas property values are vastly over inflated and even in the more rural areas they are trying to get houses on a tenth of an acre...and most areas tend to have HOAs with very restrictive laws.

MD is also very anti-business as most laws are to protect individuals at the business expense. Especially land lords.

The populus is pretty rude most of the time and go out of their way to obstruct you. Ive lived in a few different places and have had neighbors that tried to prevent me from growing gardens, looking at the stars, and other stupid crap. They cant drive very well here either. For example if you put your blinker on to merge an MD driver will speed up to try to block you instead of letting you merge. This happens daily.

Bottom line: If you are a liberal and hate all of the above this place is heaven!

Well then you would probably kill yourself if you moved to California...

Why? I have been there and the people are nicer. Granted some of the laws are stricter (gun control specifically) but in general what I have seen from CA its less of a "nanny" state than MD but just has higher taxes.

Possibly serve 25 years? Wow, got to really love corporate America. The only winner here is the corporate prison industrial complex. The offender loses out on his life over something that should've resulted in severe fines and community service, and where rapist and murderers have been given far more lenient sentences. The state loses by having to divert funds from other areas to jail this "extremely dangerous" man for 25 years (that's $1.5 MILLION, not counting the inflation that'll occur over 25 years), and the citizens lose by having to pay taxes to cover all the above.

It depends. It has the 3rd highest average family income county of all counties in the USA. But housing prices in the decent areas are sky high. It is one of the more expensive places to live. You can thank the lobbyist.

Being close to DC, and a fairly large city (Baltimore) there are plenty of competitive tech jobs in a number of fields. But traffic is abysmal. Crime in Baltimore has shot through the rough in the last two years. Annapolis is nice, Crofton is nice, Columbia exceptionally nice (and expensive), Prince George's county is a *(@#-hole. Montgomery County is a traffic nightmare (6 lanes of traffic going each way into and out of DC). Baltimore county (with the exception of Towson going North) is a @#$@# hole. Bel Aire, Waldorf, and Frederick are a bit red necky, but don't suffer the problems of the cities.

There's a vast difference in landscape. There are remote forest mountains to the west by lakes, skiing, large suburban areas, large cities, tidewater areas, and okay beaches.

It's a very liberal state (if that is your thing.) The west and tidewater regions are conservative however. But the tax structure is totally FOOBAR.

I lived in Maryland for 35 years. The price of housing and inner city issues & culture are what drove me out. I made six digits, and I just didn't have the ability to buy a $500,000 house to raise my kid in a half decent area. I didn't like the attitude of people working the stores either. Just about every store I went into near the city I got the "What are you bothering me for?" look.

Congrats on getting out! The problem with far eastern MD is that there is literally nothing out there and the bay bridge is the only way to effectively get to/from that side of the bay. Unless you are a pilot and can fly across like I do. But thats not cost effective for me to go to work.

The far west has a similar issue but at least youd be closer to DC. I am actually stuck here for a few more years and am looking at a new house in the Carroll county area. I expect to have to pay 500k or so for 5 acres and a small house...

EDIT: I totally agree with the people in the service industry here. Most are so rude its almost unbelievable.

BTW Montgomery county is horrible for speed cameras. Ive fought three of them for issuing me citations for driving AT THE SPEED LIMIT! And one for a citation on a day when I wasnt even in the area and the picture wasnt my truck.

So murder and hacking are now equivalent under lady justice eh? This is pretty much a death sentence for this guy, I don't expect him to live another 25 years given what he looks like. You make the punishment this harsh and you can expect the danger to law enforcement to escalate in attempting to apprehend them.

It is wrong to point out that its pretty obvious he used the movie theater more than the gym.

Wow, thanks man, I'll stay the fk outta Maryland! NYC isn't that far behind. Yeah, if you're $130k+ with no debt, no child support, you should be able to afford a $500k home, even if you have to go the FHA route. It think $150k+ with a child or two to be comfy.

If you want to buy a home on that salary you can easily buy a home for that amount of money in MD. I don't know what they are talking about. The problem comes if you want to live close to a city. Thats when things get expensive.

You can afford a home on 100k in MD, you can afford one on 50k/yr even. But it wont be the nicest nor will it come from land. My house was 200k with one acre and its RARE to see that now in the area where I live. Now houses are going for 400k with a tenth of an acre...

There are 445 properties for sale on an acre or more in Carroll County starting at around 165k and up. It's not hard at all to find a house on a lot of land for decent price. Now if you try to do that in Howard County or Montgomery then yeah it's going to be hard to do because of your distance to the closest city and those are the richest counties.

Which is why I am looking up there for my next house...with 5 or more acres ;). Anne Arundel county is where I live. Its crazy expensive in this area.

You're right Carrol county isn't that bad because they limit the number of new houses built per year and the number of houses per acre. But there's really only 1.5 decent roads out and it leads to Baltimore. All other roads lead you through small towns which slow you down. But a 4 bedroom house on a quarter acre for $350k is possible. If you don't need a big home, the small post ww 2 pillbox homes are available for $150k

This MD discussion is amusing to me. Completely anecdotal, and statistically irrelevant - but the top handful of a$$holes I've met in my life, they've all been from MD. In fact, there's only one person I've ever met from MD whose company I truly enjoy and I call a friend. Rudeness, better than thou attitude, name dropping whenever possible, keeping up with the Jonses, high horse political righteousness abound with people from there. So bad to stereotype and generalize, but ya. Something about that place turns people sour.

I've been around throughout my years, and while places like CA, New England, and NY have their share of rudeness and entitled behavior. MD seems to take the take.

Although I'll give a pass to anyone on [H] from MD - you're cool ;)

(what movie was that where the guy's pointing around the room, you're a d*ck, you're a d&ck, you're cool.) Off to google...

To me 1/4 acre isnt livable. I dont have the space to enjoy my property. I dont even need a 4 BR house, I just need some room to do things outside. Because the houses are so packed in you cant even practice archery around here on your own property. Its tough to fit in a garden, a place for the dog to run around etc. Unless you consider a small 10'x10' plot to be acceptable for those things (I dont).

I am not from MD but I am stuck living in this hell hole for a few years. At least until I can spin my business up to the point where I can live in another state.

I have found that people in CA get a bad rep for being rude etc. They are WAY nicer than MD folks by far. I think its one of those stereotypes that just isnt true. I would agree that the top arsehats are from MD...
