I am wanting to have a dual cpu xeon server to play with at the house. I am looking for one cheap prefer something in a poweredge 1800 or newer class.

If you're only looking for PowerEdge 1800 as a baseline, I suggest searching eBay or your local CL/Recycler. Plenty of cheap Xeon 604 boards and/or systems that are being retired.

You can probably get one for 100-300 off CL...its almost not worth it to ship a server that old.

Yeah these types of systems are worthless. I had a Super Micro 4U dual 604 system as a shelf queen in the garage for like 8 years and just recently got rid of it because I was tired of it taking up space.

I'd recommend buying a standard server board and building it yourself because shipping for rack machines is insanely expensive due to the weight. My 4U fully loaded was well over 100 lbs.

Here's a cheap dual 604 board, it has cpus in the sockets, but I don't know if they're included or not:

3.4 GHz Irwindale xeon:

The heatsinks are going to be the expensive part, but the board should fit in any EATX case.

$200-300 is the budget for a decent dual cpu server. I may be unrealistic though, let me know if I am.

I think I have a few PowerEdge 2XXX's, I know you said Xeon but any opposition to a dual Opteron?

just for shits and giggles, where is local to you? got a R610 that I've got set up for a test ESX machine but I haven't used it in a year but as was mentioned, shipping this would be a huge pain in the ass but may work out if local

oo, few hundred miles. was worth a shot lol, good luck

Thanks anyway my main concern is buying one locally that is too old out of ignorance and finding it worthless. That being said I don't think my use will be very intense I am wanting to use for a home storage server and test some VM's

not mine but same model and cheaper than I would have done lol. It does use 2.5's tho so it may be a bit much for storage but honestly you should probably go for a nas at that point anyways. If you do go for a rack mount version, you can get the HP2.5's and get dell sleds cheaper than just getting dell stuff from the get go. If you have to use the server as storage I would shy away from the rack units and lean more t410 range, it'll cost more up front but you can also use 3.5" drives which are cheaper and larger

Thats the same company I bought my server from, a Dell R710. Save My Server. I believe they are out of Georgia. They will do custom builds/configurations as well. I contacted them and told them what I was looking for, and they put up a private ebay sale and I bought it. Shipping was about 70 bucks. The server weighed about 75 pounds.

I have a Poweredge R720 and Poweredge 1950 but shipping from Florida would probably not be fun.

I am watching several local CL items maybe that way shipping won't be an issue. does anyone know if there are any decent tower dual cpu systems? or would I be better suited with a rack mount for the price?

I have an Asus dual socket LGA 1366 with two X5650 CPUs.. I'll go get the mod # off the box. and update.
6 core 12 threads per CPU
24 GB Samsung 1333 REG.EEC server memory
I have the sound card that goes with it. It is not PCI or PCIE < I have to look up what it is, but it has it.
Has 2 CPU coolers
It is in use right now, I am ready to tear it down.

You can buy a cheap E-ATX Case for it. The Antec case it is in weighs a ton or you could have it. Not worth it to ship it.
I been using an EVGA 650W gold PSU

Would you be interested in something like that?
