ASUS ROG SWIFT PG258Q (240Hz native)

Hello everyone,

Im am seriously, seriously considering dropping some big money, +$600 on this gaming monitor:

25 inch (24.5 inch viewable) FHD (1920x1080), Native 240Hz, 1ms, G-SYNC

I wanted to see if anyone here has is and what your experience / opinion is.

I will drive it with a GTX 970 and a i7 4790K, do you think this will be a bottleneck ?

Finally, is there any other model out there that competes against this one head to head?

If you had the $600 to buy a monitor, will you get it?

What is your CPU clock? Over 180FPS needs fast CPU or it will bottleneck. You should be mostly limited by GPU with a 970.

it depends on the game. you'll definitely be bottlenecked even on low in a lot of games by your GPU, your CPU is pretty much as fast as it gets so all you can really do is oc it as much as possible. faster RAM helps in some games also.

tftcentral reviewed this monitor and found that it had better overdrive than the competing aoc counterpart at the time, so i'd say go with the asus. there are others coming out/already out but i don't think they're going to be any better.

My CPU runs at 4.0Ghz normally and can be overclocked to 4.4Ghz. You really think the 970 will not be able to push 240fps on an HD resolution? Hummmmmmm

Thank you very much for your input! I think I may just buy the screen and check the games I play and see what fps I get.

If I dont get the 240.... then I will have to start looking at a new GPU.......

I have same combination 240Hz monitor (although by BenQ) + GTX 970 and a i5-4670K @ 4.3GHz but I ended up mostly using 144Hz + BenQ's Blur Reduction which already looks a great deal smoother (assuming you can maintain fps) and doesn't require as much performance. The ASUS one should also allow 144Hz ULMB which should be quite similar experience I reckon, previous GSYNC monitors were all 120Hz max so there's still a gain in ULMB motion smoothness to that ASUS 240Hz, it's very worth giving it a good go before you end up thinking 240Hz is what I must use when I paid for it. Another reason behind why I preferred most of the time 144Hz + strobing rather than 240Hz and no strobing is that the contrast ratio drops slightly bit when going up to 240Hz, I thought while the monitor got a bit darker (still more than plenty bright) with strobing enabled, the contrast ratio didn't seem to take much of a hit whit appropriate brightness setting.

Older game it's no prob but yea GTX 970 is right on the border, it's fine if you're not the guy playing new games only. I've thought about upgrading to a GTX 1070 for a long time but meh, then the mining hype suddenly showed up and I can't stand all this price increase caused by miners and lost my will to upgrade until the prices settles, I'm stubborn like that when it comes to pricing and wants to get the best deals... should have picked it up when GTX 1070 could be had for around 389 € in europe. Now I'm also awaiting some RX 56 non-reference option possibly.

At least this BenQ monitor can look very nice too for a TN panel but god damn it looked awful at the standard settings (brightness to the max, gamma was set so all colors were really washed out and the color temp was a bit too cold, like totally distorted. A little tweaks here and there and it became the by far best TN panel I've seen.
