With news of Disney pulling most of its content from Netflix by 2019 and starting its own streaming service, TorrentFreak mentions the move can lead to more rampant piracy due to a saturation of too many services. Disney's content is one of the top consumed media on Netflix. The company having its own service will only lead to fragmentation and become too expensive. It's impractical for most users, especially when there are several dedicated services a user would have to subscribe for when that same person can access an aggregated list of all media on the services in one site.

So far, there has not yet been plans to end any deals for Lucasfilm and Marvel properties the company also owns.

In piracy discussions, Hollywood insiders often stress that people have no reason to pirate, as pretty much all titles are available online legally. What they don't mention, however, is that users need access to a few dozen paid services, to access them all.

Disney stuff (well anything but the classic Disney animated stuff because...I'm not 6 anymore) is good but its not another £10 a month good.

This again is just corporations pandering to Wall Street to up the share price with little regard to every day reality and what customers actually want.

Note to media companies, contrary to what Wall Street analysts tell you, Average Joe is not a bottomless pit of $15 a month streaming subscriptions.

I have two, Prime and Netflix. I will NOT take out any further ones. Pick one, I don't care which.

"We are collecting a handsome royalty cheque from Netflix, it looks like we can keep this up for a while..."

"That nice, but what if we could have... more?"

agree, i have prime and netflix. the only other one i'd even consider possibly paying for is hulu, i'm sure as heck not paying a studio or premium channel streaming service(hbo go).

I get why Disney is doing this. However, all these streaming services are fighting over limited resources.
In my case, I am paying for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon (which I somehow always forget about). I sometimes have HBO (for GoT) and this year added Starz so I could watch American Gods. I won't keep all of these services because I have a finite amount of time and money.
I'd be willing to be a little more for something like Netflix if they had GoT/American Gods/whatever. I don't want to pay another $9.99 a month to watch one show then cancel.

This is getting so anouying. Networks keep adding there own apps to watch there shows. I know it's so they can make more money from commercials , since it's being played stright from there app. But it's getting be a pain in the ass to have 15 apps on your device to just watch what you pay for. Like a lot of stuff use to be on Hulu and now they have there own apps so I have to load it up to watch the same stuff. Hulus interface is so much better then a lot if these other apps. Sad thing is the apps are free so why in the hell make every one's life harder. But every one is out for that dollar now days , no one cares about what the customer wants or what's better for the customer. I see it all day everyday at work..

O,rly? "This content is not available from your location..."

Here in the UK American Gods is on Prime.

Fragmentation of TV shows online (and with the decrease in Netflix 3rd party content) is the primary reason why I started to pirate again.

Sorta funny full circle... used to pirate heavily until Netflix streaming... pretty much stopped and then netflix content decline and fragmentation... back to pirating...

I definitely see piracy increase and Disney losing money. Disney has some good things. Not good enough to warrant me purchasing their subscription service.

As much as I hate this move, it will make Disney money so I get it. Don't forget Disney owns Marvel and Star Wars movies. As well as ABC show which is Agents of SHIELD and something else?

I only just subbed to Netflix this year. Otherwise I was timing the free trial with Daredevil lol. Gonna be a very long time before I even consider a secondary site to sub.

But but but pirates always wanted a la carte consumption options!!!

Apparently they just wanted everything for $15 / month.

I think they are correct. It's gotten to a point that no one is going to pay for all these individual services. Only 3 for me so far and I think a 4th might be my limit. The 4th one will only happen if it's something good that I have to have.

Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime.

disney's retarded as hell if they think they'll make more money with their own service than what netflix has to pay them just to put their content on netflix..
They will make more money at first. But people won't spend on both indefinitely. Maybe with small kids they get Disney, later they get Netflix.

In general people aren't in a rush to to replace $80+ cable bill with ten $8 bills. They are going to kill the golden goose and maybe that is the point.

I might actually consider giving up Netflix for a Disney streaming service - since I have 3 young kids and another on the way.

It's like built in parental controls, and quality content pretty much ensured.

Edit
Ha. I just asked my wife and she said no way. What would we watch? I said Amazon Prime. She said Amazon Prime is terrible compared to Netflix. So, sorry Disney -- not gonna happen.

I was looking into seeing if I could invest in Hulu and when I was looking into it I saw somewhere that Disney was a big investor in Hulu.com. So to me it seems to make sense that their interests are in hulu and not as much in netflex.

you also have to consider expenses for hosting, app creation, website maintenance, servers, bandwidth, along with dealing with all the other issues netflix has had to deal with for bandwidth priority now that the net neutrality shit is ending.. i can't possibly see them making more money in the long term than what they were already making from netflix without any work required on their end to get it to viewers.

the one major reason people are still willing to pay the 80 bucks for cable/sat is because everything is there. you don't need to turn on one box to see discovery channels, turn on another to see sports channels, and another for premium channels or network channels, etc, etc, etc. but some how companies haven't figured it out.

I wouldn't be surprised. Anyhow, that's why we have BD movies we like and rip portable copies (and high quality on home server). Screw all this streaming bullshit and crappy video quality that comes with it. Netflix is pretty bad IMO, to the point I wouldn't watch anything on it when I was test driving friend's account. Their 4K steams are a joke too, just a blurry mess.

Nah

Streaming has come a LONG way in the last couple years. They have even introduced Dolby Atmos on Vudu.

Between streaming and redbox I barely buy a movie anymore.

What people fail to realize is how expensive a monthly service would be if it included everything. The main complaint on this site with cable company been that you have to buy all these packages with channels they don't want. At least with all these different streaming services give you some what of a choice. People need to stop feeling entitled to be able watch what ever they want for $10. Licensing is a complicated matter.

I can't see Disney making money. I feel their operating cost is going to be higher than their profits. Service will probably be shit, unless they decide to make use of something like AWS for storage of their content.

I agree with many about how ridiculous this is. We had a short reign where legal online streaming has had great appeal and now greed has reared its ugly head again. In essence this is pretty much how cable/satellite packaged services started. When Hulu tiered itself it was another sign. The numerous other exclusive services that have popped up are another. I knew it was the end last year when CBS said that the new star trek would be the flagship for its new streaming service.

I don't really understand the details of the rumors I've read about it but I did read something about 2 months ago regarding Apple considering buying Disney and Disney consequently pulling their stuff from Netflix. This move seems to lend itself to that rumor.

Yeah amazed how many media companies have not woken up to the fact the Internet makes the world effectively one country, media consumption wise.
And the only way they can legitimately claim "no reason" is when they stop hobbling paid customers with drm and other restrictions, like locked in players, no ability to take screenshots, or even cut together a review from the footage.

There's a knock-on effect with Disney pulling out of Netflix they might not have considered...A lot (and I mean a LOT) of folks don't watch series television when its broadcast, but will watch the hell out of it on Netflix, and if they enjoy the series, many will then start following new episodes on broadcast.

So, Disney makes $$ selling the series to Netflix (well before they'd hope to get any traditional syndication money from it) and they also pick up ratings on the current show, making them more advertising $$. Cut out Netflix and there's some serious money left on the table, and a loss of viewership overall. Because while I might enjoy watching an ABC series or two on Netflix because its there, it's not enough to get me to pony up another subscription fee.

I'd have to agree that the fragmentation will lose them money overall. I just dropped a couple of streaming sites because I was just putting to much money out on different services per month. Down to prime / Netflix / HBO currently. When GoT is over, HBO will be as well. I suspect I'll pick up something that will get me access to ESPN stations for college football season, but that will be temporary as well.

I have a Netflix subscription, and nothing else. In Canada, I don't find a Prime subscription worth it (we get sooooo much less than people south of the border), so I don't see that changing any time soon.

Anything Netflix doesn't have that I want to see... I manage.

Disney purchased BAM Tech, Baseball's streaming video company. They're serious. And they've announced a ESPN OTT service in addition to Disney's. (And an ABC Television OTT service probably isn't far behind.

This was inevitable. There are fewer cable subscribers now than there are Netflix subscribers.

And Disney would rather have consumers give them the money directly than via licensing their content through third parties. (I don't think an Apple/Disney deal is coming either)

Disney owns a good portion of hulu why wouldn't they eventually move their content to hulu, really most major TV and movie distributors own a part of hulu, hulu grows as netflix becomes a movie and original content platform.

Not sure a lot of people would really consider getting prime solely for the streaming they have. To me its just a bonus that comes along with what is effectively pre-paying for shipping costs I know I'd end up paying otherwise.

Blow me blow me blow me.

I'm not playing a fucking game of "Oh, I want to see a disney movie, what app is that on again?" then later it's "Oh, I want to watch an episode of Rick & Morty, which app is that on again? Was it hulu, netflix, or Amazon?"

Screw you and screw the monthly fee subscription bullshit.

Guess how many apps I have to open right now? 1. It's called Plex Media Server and it's awesome. Douchebag media companies could learn a thing or 2.

Yup! Other than Netflix, I have Emby :D

And this is their problem.
They think they will make more money because they won't have to split the revenue with Netflix.
However, it's more likely the they will have less subscribers and actually have LESS revenue.

Only way I see this succeeding is it it's really cheap and includes not just the movies, but all the TV shows from their cable channels including Disney XD.

I care which one. Prime's interface is absolute and utter shit. Its hard to find things on there, the fast forward/rewind is garbage, and its just clunky over all. Netflix is a much better user experience.

That aside I am NOT adding a third streaming service. I wouldnt even have two if Prime didnt come with free shipping and all that other crap.

This will be the first time a new Star Trek show airs and I dont see it as it airs. CBS has killed the show before it even started by locking it down to their service only. Disney will have the same issue with shows they put on there.

I only hope it wont take them long, or many destroyed shows, to realise this is a bad idea...monumentally bad idea.

Look, vertical integration in the entertainment space is winning at the moment. As a giant ass media company, they have to be able to pivot to the new market. That market may not be durable, but it IS going to be the stepping stone to whatever comes next.

Beyond that it makes sense. The cable market has peaked. It is not where you go to chase growth at this point. Streaming is growing, and that includes the one stop buffet model like amazon and netflix and hulu, but it also includes streaming cable models with more customization lie vue, sling, etc. even prime is knid of like that with their premium pass through subscriptions for hbo, starz, etc.

The reality is that amazon and netflix suck for kids, it's all cheap knock off programs rather than the brands they like. What solid brands that are there are probably getting paid like shit. If you go to something like vue or sling, to get the "family" package with the kid friendly stuff, you are looking at an $8-15 upcharge.

Cable will start to make sense again because of cost. Its only a matter of time before every major studio "cuts off the middle man" and have their own streaming service.
