Gearbox software sent out and email, and launched an official website for it's new "Top-Secret" game, "Project 1v1." The website informs us that Gearbox will be holding a closed technical test this summer, which will include 3 game modes: Ranked, Challenge, and Arena.

Very strange concept, and unfortunately there is little else for information about the game at this time. While I haven't gotten into any of the online CCGs, I am an old school magic player, and the incorporation of a CCG with an FPS is really intriguing to me.

Project 1v1 is the code name for Gearbox's top-secret, in-development, competitive first-person shooter that combines the action of fast-paced 1v1 first-person combat with the metagame strategy of a collectible card game.

Exactly... Here we go again in that all anyone wants from Gearbox is a new Borderlands game, and they decide to put something else out that nobody asked for. A new BL game would make them a lot of money.

I've got a couple hundred hours in BL1 and BL2.. I can honestly say I'd take it or leave it at this point the pre-sequel was just garbage and did nothing innovative at all.

Pre-Sequel should've been DLC, it brought nothing new to the game. I think they can pull off a great BL3 but Gearbox seems to be losing its creative shine these days.

The pre-sequel was surprisingly bad after how great bl2 was. They obviously don't understand what made the franchise great. Pre-sequel was a waste of cash.

100% agree, while seeing the story of Jack was awesome, it was a $15 DLC at best. And mechanically the game was just bad as well, leveling up didn't feel like it did much of anything, I went on average 5-6 levels before finding upgraded guns, in a game that's supposed to be all about guns. There were a few really well done characters, but not enough to carry the game by a long shot

I've got around 400 in BL1, and 200 in BL2. I actually own, but have not played the Pre Sequel. I would happily welcome a full Borderlands 3, or rumored Borderworlds game though. The studio that did TPS wasn't the same as the first two games either btw. I'll probably eventually give it a shot, but I still play the first two once in a while, and really haven't felt the need to launch TPS.

I just looked in my spam folder and found the invite email but was just not in the mood to deal with it, since I'm still feeling burned from the Colonial Marines nonsense that Gearbox pulled.

Colonial Marines doesn't really bother me. I didn't get burned by it though. I mean, sure, I'm disappointed in how it turned out, but I saw the writing on the wall before its release, and decided that my Alien-Money was going to Isolation.

However, I also got the invite, and no, I won't be bothering either. Wake me up when they release the game I want from them.

got the invite yesterday and meh. TBH I like my shooters without class mechanics / progression - every toon in the map equally spec'd, and let's compete on skill.

Unlocks for appearance mods tho. Gotta compete to unlock them the moment they drop

I understand game vendors feel they need to "change it up" for commercial reasons, which is fine if that's creating a new category (eg CTF, payload), but then don't call it a shooter with 1v1 in the name?

I like classes, progression, skills, etc. in single player or co-op type shooters (like oh, I don't know Borderlands, which is what they should be making... :D ) I agree with you completely though in multiplayer non-co-op games/modes. Everyone should be pretty equal (though maybe a perk here or there, or powerup pickup is fine.)

Would anyone else like to see a cross between Ark and Borderlands? Something "open world" that allows player building and crafting to an extent. Let the players operate as one of the wasteland gangs, build up a base and some reputation. It could be a great PvP and PvE experience if done well.

Really I'd like to see the Borderlands setting and formula mixed with something else. I love the story and loot. FPS alone is just a bit too stale.

Any other ideas?

Not a bad idea. However, the beauty of BL to me is that I can play with some friends, at will, start my own games LAN or internet, and play it exactly how I want. If it was big-server based / massive it would appeal to me a lot less. However, I'm probably in the minority there, and adding some scale and mechanics while keeping what makes a Borderlands game intact as well, does sound intriguing overall.

Yeah, nothing like getting a few friends together for a Knox run. In an MMO, I usually spend most of my playtime doing instance runs with friends. But as J3RK says, tough to strike a balance between "massive" and all the development cost, waiting for new content to drop, etc and being able to just get a quick fix like L4D

To me, the beauty of Ark is that it allows you to have private persistent servers. If it is just me, I can log in and do some hunting, gathering or crafting on my own. If I can wrangle a few friends, we can all hop on and do something together. I've played on a few private servers where everyone gets to know each other. It can be a lot of fun when there is just the right amount of contention. You could treat it as a persistent coop game, a persistent multiplayer game for select people, or almost a full on MMO if you open the doors to all.

It's a damn shame more games don't support the good old business models of the golden age of PC gaming. Cheat codes, mods, private servers, peer to peer match making, etc. Now we get real cash loot boxes and always online requirements for our single player games that prevent mods. Thanks consoles!

That's pretty cool actually. I'm of course aware of Ark, but never gave it any serious thought or attention. I don't have consistent amounts or schedules of time that I can put into a game, so I didn't even think it would be worth trying. Sounds like it goes a long way to alleviate that for the type of game it is. Nice! Yeah, in that sort of scenario, I could see my self playing BordArkLands. :D
