I was given a dead Dell Dimension 5150 (Bad MB Capacitor plague)

Anyway it has an awesome fan for the CPU and I was wanting to use it as a chassis fan in my spare test/Hackintosh machine. however the fan draws 1.4A and I think that is way too much for the motherboards chassis fan header

So my question is this the fan has PWM and an RPM lead (4 wires) so can I attach the PWM and RPM lead to the chassis fan header while the two power leads are attached directly to the cases main and only power supply without damaging anything?

I already made the adapter I just want confirmation that what I want to do will not damage the motherboard or power supply or another part of the system.

The motherboard is from an Asus CM6830 and closely resembles the P8H61-M Pro (Minus the DVI Port)

They make adapters like that, and many multi fan headers/splitters work in the same way, you should be fine.

Also, look up the mobo, most will be "ok" for 1A, but nothing more, however many more performance mobos are rated for more than 1A on the fan headers, sometimes however there are only one or two "high current" headers and sometimes it's all of them. Most of them being 1.5-2A rated, not seen anything more than that however.

OK Thank You for the reassurance that I would not damage any part of the computer. It works and damn that fan moves some air also while making alot of noise

The connector was Dell specific so I had a dead 4 pin CPU fan and a dead fan with a molex pass through so I joined the right wires by pin-out as the wire colors were different. I save the connectors of dead fans for this very reason :)

I have to figure out how to control the fan in OS X (Hackintosh) but I can figure it out in my own

Anyway if anybody is interested here are the specs of that Nidec fan that was in the Dell
