Samsung Releases The Galaxy S8 Active

Samsung has officially released the Galaxy S8 Active, available to pre-order tomorrow through AT&T, and will be available in stores Aug. 11th. The S8 Active features a 5.8" AMOLED screen, 12MP rear camera, and a metal body that's compliant with the MIL-STD-810G specification for water, dust and shock resistance. It also comes equipped with a larger 4,000 mAh battery compared to the standard S8's 3,000 mAh.

I would definitely prefer the Active version over the standard with how I usually end up treating my phones, and I'm not a fan of the Edge display on the Galaxy lineup. While there is some bundle specials, the S8 Active is only available through AT&T Next at this time, for $28.34 for 30 months, which works out to $850.20. Ouch.

Looks like a fantastic and less fragile version of the S8! And a bigger battery too?!? Samsung iS hitting homeruns with this phone!

Agreed, I believe it's a "timed exclusive" kind of thing, but there is no mention of when it's going to other carriers.

It isn't a timed exclusive. AT&T always had an exclusive on the Active version. No other carrier has it, ever. S4 to S7 Active all AT&T exclusive.

Gives the impression it's a timed exclusive to me at least, I could be wrong tho
 
They blew it when they didn't offer a non-curved screen a few months ago. I'm also not switching carriers for a damn phone. Jerks.

Looking forward to my pixel 2.

We can both be wrong. At the moment I'm going based off every previous Active edition, all have been exclusive to AT&T. Aside from the unlocked versions directly from Samsung.
 
if you can justify the active rating and the durability that comes with it then the curved glass is the LAST thing you want. i have the s7 active and it can take much abuse. the s7 with curved glass i had broke/shattered very easily. i might take a curved glass model if ya gave it to me, just to sell it.
 
This should be what the normal galaxy phone should be like but it is not all pretty. So people don't want it.

That's how I got my S5 Active. The S6 had just come out and I was looking for a new phone. Cyber Monday post deal (it was a Wednesday) I got it for $.01 with another deal. Practically giving the phones away with a purchase. Good solid phone too works without any scratches or dents after all this time.

Some people want it, but they are never given a choice unless they are on ATT. Which is my main problem with this. Why is it that niche phones, as in the ones that would have a smaller user base are so often exclusives, it makes almost no sense. If its a niche device you would think you would want to grab up that niche in as many carriers as possible especially because people whom purchase niche devices are probably the type of people who are a little more picky about what they choose for many things in life, including carriers. And to me that makes them less likely to move carriers to get a phone.
 
Several features are quite attractive including the larger battery. That said, I probably would only buy it if the price goes down. Right now the S8+ with the 6.2" screen is $675 unlocked on Best Buy for example. If the S8 Active gets the $150-200 discount that seems pretty standard for the regular versions, I would definitely consider it.

I'm currently waiting for the Pixel 2 XL and Note 8 to come out so I know what all my choices look like before upgrading my Nexus 6P.

My s8 is the most fragile goddamn device I've ever owned. I've had it three months and it looks like I've had it three years. Screen is cracked on both the front and back, tiny little scratches all over the screen. I even have it in a case, and I rarely leave the house since I work from home, it pretty much just sets on my desk all day. Oh, and the battery life is fucking terrible. I can't hardly make it an entire day without having to set it on the charger.

Sounds like the s8 active would pretty much address every problem I have with this phone, but it is definitely butt ugly. That said, once you slap on a big, garrish monstrosity of a case on the regular s8 so it doesn't break if you accidentally fart with it in your pocket, the aesthetics are shot to hell anyways. Might as well just get the active and save yourself the trouble.
 
So where is this in Samsung range? I am asking because I honestly have no idea what the differences are between their dozens of models, that all seem to be similar prices and specifications?
 
Broke my S8 a week or so ago - back to an iPhone and couldn't be happier about it. I want to like the android platform, but there were just so many more bugs going on in apps I use that it was getting frustrating. Some of the problems were from the 'edge' part of the screen not being particularly responsive, so I guess some problems with apps and some with the s8 design itself.

Loaded up my last backup from my old iphone from 6 months ago, and bam, everything just works again. I know a lot of folks dislike Apple and all, but damn, you have to admit the iPhones are stable.
 
wow... no issues here with my s8+.. ive dropped it several times on hard flooring..... battery lasts 3 days with medium to light usage.... i couldnt be happier.....
 
Ended up buying an s8+ today--price too attractive. Was planning on waiting on Pixel 2 and Note 8 or waiting to see if the S8 active price would drop but couldn't resist. With various promos ended up getting it for $525 shipped from the Samsung Mobile ebay store.
 
Active isn't available anywhere (or anyone) else in the world, so it being an AT&T exclusive doesn't surprise me in the slightest, especially considering they used to force Apple stores to sell iPhones on their contract, which I find extremely unusual and very disappointing.

Besides it being an mobile company exclusive (a complete deal breaker), this model, in terms of design and specs, would have been amongst the top.

S6 active was made specifically for AT&T, so I wouldn't expect it to be a timed exclusive, only a complete exclusive.
