GameStop Will Be Open on Thanksgiving This Year

What’s funny is the claim that store associates asked for this: GameStop will be open this Thanksgiving, throwing away any respect for its workers and families. The only good news is that unlucky associates may be granted an increased holiday pay rate. How many people still leave the house for Black Friday sales?

In 2014, GameStop CEO Paul Raines said the move to keep its stores closed on Thanksgiving was "out of respect for our associates and their families." He added at the time: "Sometimes, we have to not let the pressure from other retailers distract us from our values." In recent years, GameStop was closed on Thanksgiving Day but opened at midnight for the Black Friday shopping bonanza. GameStop will presumably compensate Thanksgiving Day employees with an increased holiday pay rate, though this is not confirmed.

I don't see why it should be surprising that some employees would want this. You make more for the same amount of work. The value of the holidays, spending time with the family, and this specific holiday would also vary from employee to employee.

How many people still shop at GameStop? I can only assume children. Better deals for almost everything they sell are available online elsewhere.

This screams of management grasping at straws to find new ways to keep the business relevant. With digital sales becoming more prominent, Amazon Prime members getting 20% off pre-orders that will be delivered to their door step on the day of release and Best Buys' gamers club unlocked membership where a $30 fee gets you 20% off all new games for 2 years they have to try something to say LOOK AT ME PLEASE BUY FROM OUR STORES AGAIN!!!!

I'm sure some people would rather deal with crazy thanksgiving day customers than their crazy family. How great will it be to tell people that there are no SNES classics all day, cause you and your coworkers bought the ones in the morning. :D

If you work at GameStop, I would think you'd want to avoid your family and the inevitable "oh, you still work there?" comment. I think they did ask for it.

I deal with going in to trade in 3ds games. That's it.

I like how they paid somebody to park their RS8 there for the stock photo.

Company will be gone soon enough.

It does feel as if we are starting to hit an inflection point. It seems like everything is constantly "On Sale!!!!", to the point where there is no gratification for finding a deal. Retailers apparently respond by encroaching more into traditional "family time" days, but it doesn't seem to be a strategy that is paying off.

Our society constantly pushes the values of family. But I really think this is more telling that this who value is complete BS. There's a reason why many people would rather be doing anything else to avoid time with relatives they only visit because of forced societal pressure.

I am sure some employees did ask for it. Those that didn't will now face either missing turkey day with the family or getting down rated on evaluations. From TFA, it won't even be a full day of work but "shortened and limited" hours. After taxes, the employee's will be lucky to clear $30 extra in most locations.

I stopped going to Gamestop to buy $10 games because I found the employees to be condescending morons.

That was during the Call of Duty: World at War launch-- that seems like a lifetime ago.

Judging by the lines a mile long at my local Best Buy every Black Friday, I'd wager a lot of people still physically truck it to a store on BF. :D

It's because B&M stores are doing in-store only deals now to try and stay relevant. But Cyber Monday has taken over Black Friday as of last year in terms of total sales (if I'm not mistaken), and it's going to continue getting worse for those trying to hang onto the old guard.

Oh I agree. The lines at some of the stores here on BF have gotten smaller but certainly not gone. I generally don't bother with shopping at all on BF, have not found anything worth a darn at a good $$$ that I don't already have.

Gamstop still exists? Sigh.....

Look, I hear about retail workers having to work Thanksgiving (yes, I believe it's a bad thing), but what about all the other people who work Thanksgiving/Christmas/whatever holiday....

I work in tech support anyways, and Thanksgiving is a Canadian holiday in October and a United States holiday in November. I handle Asia-Pacific customers, and it's a normal workday, thus.... I work anyways.

I stopped go to them when they sent my pre-order copy of Deus Ex Human Revolution back to HQ because of their fued with onlive or whatever that service was. I went to pick up the game and they told me it wasn't there....i was pissed i got my refund and went to best buy down the street and bought the game. Haven't gone back to a game stop since. They suck anyway, all they do is cater to Console players and rip off people with their trade-in and used game sales. Screw that PoS company....

People are selective about what riles them up.

People who love dogs to death typically don't mind that pigs, cows, chickens, etc.. get slaughtered by the millions to get eaten but boy do they flip their shit when they hear of country XYZ eating dog meat.

How is Gamestop even still in business with digital distribution being what it is? Even if you must have a physical copy of a game, Amazon is a better way to go. And for used stuff, there's Ebay and Amazon resellers. Their business model is a weird anachronism in 2017.

I stopped going there around 2005. The PC section had gone from a wall of games to a tiny selection near the back of the store. It was a fucking joke and the help they hired were lazy and uncaring a-holes.

There is a Gamestop close to where I live. The workers are actually pretty cool. I've only been in the store about 3 times in the last 7-10 years I guess? Is stopped in to get the NES Classic - the guy told me about the limited amount they got and offered to check around for me. I didn't want it that bad, so thanked him and left. I also let me kids get a few Xbox 360 games (when they used it - they are now PC Gamers and don't even consider using consoles).
Like others, surprised they are still around. I buy my PC games mostly from Steam, GOG, HumbleBundle, etc.
Shop on Black Friday? Only from Amazon.com usually :)

Fuck I haven't bought something from them since I preordered Battlefield 2142 11 years ago for the stupid 64MB (not a typo) USB flash drive that was offered.

I stopped going to Gamestop when they kept selling me "new" games by taking out an opened disc from behind the counter and sticking it in the empty box I brought from the shelf. Opening a bunch of new games and taking the discs out just to put more empty boxes on the shelf is just fucking retarded.

"To better serve our guests with their evolving holiday shopping needs, this year GameStop will open its stores for a shortened and limited time on Thanksgiving Day,"

Isn't evolving holiday shopping doing it online? Last year broke records for online shopping.

An important life lesson I have learned from being on a crowded island is, Public days are literally the worst days to take a holiday.

If I were a GameStop employee, I'd probably have taken up on it, especially if it leads to having a stronger say in getting a leave day that I want.

I do, but i drive people crazy and do NOT tell them what I'm after. The last 5 years at the same best buy, people ask me what I'm gonna get. MUMS the word! That way no one goes after the same stuff i get. I never rush for the "ticketed items".

They've never made much money off of new sales. It's always been off used sales. Ultimately tons of people still buy used games/consoles from them because it's the easiest and largely only option out there unless you have a local one-off store. I still buy all my Nintendo games used through them because the pricing is largely on-par with Amazon, but I get it immediately and I get rewards points as well that pays for a free game every so often.

As long as consoles offer physical media Gamestop will survive. Obviously they are largely dead for PC Games - Although i'll point out they did a deal a while back where I got 30% extra on my trade-ins (Stacked with the pro bonus as well) and I traded in a bunch of WiiU/3DS games I was done with towards a Steam gift card.

Your smaller cities/towns are very much still physical businesses. I'm the only one in my family that rarely goes into a B&M shop and just do most of my shopping online. Even when I go to a B&M store, I only go to the pick up location, as I ordered whatever it is online first.

That's essentially all of my hometown. Nothing better to do, but go walk around B&M stores buying shit.
