I am sure that Bill will still be able to get some quality sleep tonight, but many are reporting that Jeff Bezos now has more money than him. Gates has been the world’s richest person for a number of years, but a surge in Amazon’s stock has changed that: Bezos now has a net worth of $90.9 billion, versus $90.7 billion for Gates. The Amazon CEO was “only” the fourth-wealthiest person at the beginning of this year.

“Amazon Prime is why so much physical retail is going away,” said Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities Inc. analyst who has a buy rating on the stock and a price target of $1,250. “Anyone who joins Prime shops in retail stores 10 percent less, and that number will keep accelerating as Amazon adds more inventory.” Investors also monitor Amazon’s cloud-computing division, Amazon Web Services, a fast-growing and profitable business that accounts for about 10 percent of revenue. Amazon leads the cloud-computing industry, but faces increasing competition from Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet Inc.

I was under the impression at over 200 billion Putin was the world's most wealthy person? I hate it too but this sounds inaccurate...

It's undeniably Putin that's the world's richest. Not even close. One of the perks of being a dictator is not having to disclose anything to anyone.

Nobody knows how much Putin really has. I'm guessing not all of it was earned by legitimate means.

He doesn't advertise, and much of what he "owns" is via a network of shell companies and such. He doesn't want anyone to know what he's really worth, or where he "earned" that money.

I mean, at a certain point you already have hookers and blow for life. What else do you need?

Spend some of that shit, make some investments, take some risk you dumb fucks.

At least Elon Musk (not that I have a hardon for the guy) has taken some financial risk with his startups and acquisitions.

Maybe that's because he's a fluffy cat on his lap away from being a Bond villain.

Bond: "Do you expect me to talk?"

Bezos: "No Mister Bond, I expect you to sign up for Amazon Prime and take advantage of our free 2 day shipping and countless other perks!"

Bond: "Can I have an Amazon Echo installed in my Aston Martin DB5?"

Bezos: "Certainly Mister Bond... certainly..." <cackles as he rubs his hands together and charges Bond's card for the first year>

(Apologies to fans of Goldfinger) :p

I'd suck as a CEO. Once I got enough cash to be comfortable, I'm out and playing with my toys. Then again, to play with rockets like Bezos, maybe you need 90 billion.
(I'd be happy in my basement with a few upgraded servers and a refrigerator stocked with diet Mt. Dew - what can I say, I'm a simple person).

It may be just me, but all the pictures of Bezos I see lately remind me of Lex Luthor.

There should a be difference between worth and wealth. Bezos is worth the most, but I am guessing he could not spend as much as Gates. He needs his shares to retain control of Amazon, and even if he tried to sell, I am sure there would be limits. Not to mention the stock price would tank if he tried to get rid of all his stock. On the other hand, Gates sold a lot of his MS stock already (he still has a ton left), so he could probably sell off a lot of his investments without too much trouble. Not to mention he probably has more liquid assets available than Bezos does.

I still remember when he cracked that Keynote joke of his "They keep asking me if we're going to change over to Amazon.Org, because we're clearly not for profit...".

HOOOO man good times, now the dude could buy his own Planet. :)

Worth = Riches?

I guess... it's kind of like holding onto all that stock that's "worth" a lot, then BAMMO something happens and now it's "worth" less.
