Google has confirmed with Search Engine Land that they are running an experiment where they auto-play videos in the search results page. The tester wrote "when you do a search for some movies (and possibly television shows), Google will begin autoplaying a video in the right hand sidebar, appearing within the knowledge panel."

So this would be terrible. Aside from auto-play videos being probably the most annoying thing you can put on a webpage, this will increase adblock usage significantly in my opinion. I really hope this does not come to be and it ends with this test. If not we need to bring back AltaVista.

A Google spokesperson confirmed this limited test, telling us "we are constantly experimenting with ways to improve the search experience for our users, but have no plans to announce at this time."

Haven't they been experimenting with disabling most autoplay videos? Obviously except their own ads.

I currently don't use any ad blocking software, but if I come across this crap I'll find something to block this behaviour.

I guess Google forgot why people changed to Google from all the other search engines and email clients, but the inconspicuous text-only ads were in the top 3.

I still refuse to visit some sites precisely because they have any videos that autoplay (except youtube itself, when I specifically click on a video link). Forget ads, anything. I don't care what it is. I hate it.

As it stands I don't go to NFL.com anymore specifically because every fucking page has some auto-play video in the corner, not even an ad either, it's like WTF people have a link to the video don't just show it to me regardless of if I want it.

Any website that auto loads a video is a no go, there is a couple of almost as good alternatives to google (I think they still use some form of googles search engine)

I hate auto playing videos and music. I really hate it when they hide the controls for the video or music and I can't stop it. I insta-leave that site in those situation, then never come back.

CNN is a big user of auto play video. would not be an issue if there was a setting to disable. I'd even sign up as a user just to be able to disable auto play. Hence don't go to CNN anymore.

I feel the exact same way plus I'm sure it will lead to instant commercials.

News sites in general mostly think you want autoplay vidoes--of course, the ad comes first, too.
