WD Easystore External Discussion

Been keeping an eye on this thread for a while and finally picked up 2 today at my local BB. Now have 4x my previous storage. Thanks for the notice!

Not to get too off topic, but can a typical NAS run apps? I'm currently using an i7860 for WHS, but if I could run a music server or 2 (logitech/slimserver and subsonic) as well as a few other apps, and save a lot of electricity/heat, it might be worth making a move.

I'm so freaking tempted, but the NAS still has 2.7TB free and is in need of a good cleanup...

Exact same boat here...plus I'm only using 4 out of 5 bays on my 1515+. But it's tempting - even more so at $160 per drive. Just have to resist when I know I can free up some more space on the NAS and add the fifth drive but I'm happy so many people are getting lots of storage at a reasonable price thanks to this thread. $160 for 8TB is so much more palatable than $299!

I still have 3.45 TB free on my array but still bought 9x of them. These are rock bottom prices, I honestly didn't expect to see them below $180 for a long time to come.

Damn, such a good deal. Tempted to purchase a pair but I currently have 10TB of free space.

Got my price adjusted for the first 3 and grabbed another! They told me you have be 15 days from purchase to adjust.

The real problem with these 8TB drives, especially if you buy a bunch of them, is trying to fill them up with stuff you actually want to keep. Just one single 8TB drives holds more than 3000 1080p h.264 movies. There is no way anyone can actually use all of the data these can hold. Even if you stream videos/tv shows/music to every TV in the house, and say you have 5 TV's, it will take more than a lifetime for people to watch all of the content they can hold on a few of these 8TB drives...
LMAO!!! I store my dual layer blu-ray moviess which are in upwards of 45GB each! I have a total of 25TB of HDDs with blu-ray movies on them. What were you saying about there's no way anyone can actually use all the data these can hold again?! ;)

it's nice when you can replace 11 drives with just one.

We get used to having everything available; Netflix, amazon prime, youtube, daily motion, torrents, etc.. Then when we go back to watch it, it's gone; copyright holder took it down. Which is why I grab anything I MIGHT want to watch down the line sometime, and store it. And that takes lots of cheap space. LOTS.

Higher and higher definition means mostly crap. A great show is still great on a 9" black and white TV, and you'll still enjoy watching it, hence all the people watching videos on their phones. OTOH, a crappy movie with tons of stuff blowing up in 4K is still a crappy movie that you keep getting off the couch to do something other than watch that dreck. Every year during the superbowl, one of my idiot friends sits and points out how marvelous it is that we can see the blades of grass on the field 'IN HD'; he's not paying attention to the game, he's examining the friggin' grass. Same with the surround sound nutcases. If you're watching a movie and can't enjoy it because the sound isn't quite right for you, then the movie sucks anyway. Great writing makes you forget you're watching a movie screen; it sucks you in and you actually think the actors are in front of you.

Crappy plots makes you want to count pixels instead of paying attention to the story, and no matter how great the resolution, it's still going to suck.
Such a limited way of thinking about movies! It's all immersion, my friend. Surround sound and beautiful visuals just add to the overall immersion of the film and I can attest that it enriches my experience of any film I watch whether it has great plots/storylines or not!

I tried to do a price adjustment but failed because it's over the price guarantee period. Oh-well.... $180 was a good deal to begin with.

Bought one today during lunch at the local Best Buy. Appears I received the 256MB cache version (WD80EFAX).

Guys. Is Firmware on these external drives same as it would be on a barebone WD Red?
I am looking to upgrade my NAS as I am totally out of space.
Should Firmware difference be a issue.

Thanks

Are u guys formatting these drives after taking them out of enclosure or just putting them in NAS and letting the NAS do it's stuff?

Thanks

I ran the WD drive utility stuff on them, then formatted the long way.

I have a (down at the moment due to unknown failure) 3tb x 6 RAID 6 (ZFS) array.

Would be awesome to get 6 of these drives for 32TB usable capacity.

But 8TB drives too large for a RAID6?

Also I am/was using FREENAS... (with ZFS) worth continuing or is there another/better OS/FS?

:)

This is confirmed 1000% that the drives retain their warranty? If so, how long of a warranty do you get? The normal warranty you would get for that drive? Im on the fence about purchasing two or three... but have no desire to purchase a drive with no warranty.

Just buy the box that says "made in Thailand" if you want the 256mb cache. My friend and bought 6 between us. He's shucked 3 of them. Returning a 128mb cache tomorrow for a Thialand.

This is working for us.

What's the difference between the 128mb and 256mb? Helium ?

Bought 2 and they arrived today. Really nice WD 8TB Red NAS drives for a good price. I ended up ordering another 2 now lol. I just really can't wrap my head around these drives costing less than bare internal drives. Seriously the bare ones are around $104 more.

The warranty though is 2 years but you will probably have to put it back in the enclosure to get it. I have to keep the shells around for 2 years which kind of sucks. I followed the PDF guide posted earlier in this thread and there was no damage at all to the case. It's really easy to do.

I guess I will order them here soon -_-. Hot deals forum fucks up my bank account.

Anyone know what some 3tb Toshiba drives would be worth? lol

$75 shipped maybe less.
only get the 3TB the 6TB are total shit....i got burned hard being an early buyer of the 6TB before we found out they were trash :/

Also only retail. The packaging on OEM are trash and they drop like flies

sounds like he was wanting to sell his 3TB Toshibas when he gets the 8TB Reds, lol

Sorry catching onto this thread late, any fast way to check from the box to see if it is 128MB or 256MB cache? I think I saw it was mentioned Made in Taiwan vs. Made in China? Once shucked it is easy to tell but looking to see if I can differentiated from the box markings. Any help would be appreciated!!

on the bottom of the box,

Damn, this really makes me wish I would have jumped on the laptop trade in promotion they were running a few weeks ago. Instead of getting Reds for half price, I'd basically be getting them free.

I think I'll try my local best by this afternoon and see if I cant get 4 of the same.

I guess my question I want to throw out there. Is it a good idea to store all your data AND surveillance video on the same NAS and do reds vs purples make much of a difference for small scale surveillance video recording? I only have one camera right now but plan to get up to 5 at some point.

I totally agree. I won't watch a new movie unless it's in quality HD and surround sound. All these people leaking crap cam verions etc, total waste of an experience.

I don't know about 1000%, but this thread over at reddit reports someone getting RMA through WD even though they snapped the tabs off:
On an unrelated note, all 9 of my drives are made in Thailand, so yay I guess. I think I'll use Hard Disk Sentinel to test them out, now to slab a usb 3 hub on the girlfriend's pc and get to work.

Local BB had them this morning. I grabbed the first 3 on the shelf, and they were all Thailand/256MB cache. Now to build a FreeNAS box.

Yeah these are such a good deal that I went back and bought 5 more. 40tb unformatted

Have a total of 6 now.

Just received a Product of Thailand version from the most recent sale that shipped from Fresno. (Happy dance)

Bought 10 from best buy (multiple purchases).

Nine of the ten were the 256mb cache ones. I had opened 6 or 7 and they were all the EFAX models, so I said eff it and started shucking them without even looking at the box or testing them. Last one was the 128mb cache one. Oops

Noob here. Before I pull the trigger at BB, does anyone on this thread know if the drives support NASware 3.0? (EFAX or EFZX).
