GamesIndustry.biz to some time to pose some questions to HTC's General Manager of Vive, Dan O'Brien, and Vice President of Global VR Content, Joel Brenton. It looks as if HTC is happy with its meeting its first year targets with early VR adopters and are happy where things are going outside of the gaming space. One of the biggest complaint about adopting VR has been there are is very little AAA gaming content and this we addressed.

"Very large and high-production games take a while to make, as we know," Breton said. "Being 15 or 16 months into commercial launch, there's a lot of stuff still in the oven that hasn't even been announced that we're salivating to see what the reaction is. But there's a lot of stuff that has been announced. I don't know if you got to see Doom or Fallout yet. Doom is actually really refreshing. I was worried about it before I got the headset on just because it's such a fast game, but they understood that and worked around it.

That all said, there is a plethora of very solid VR content already on Steam if you take the time to track it down. But assuredly the indie gaming industry has more than answered the needed content call to move early VR adoption along. O'Brien surely agrees with our point of view that Mobile VR (phone supported) is more a gateway to "real" interactive VR experiences.

"I think they're going to survive in tandem," O'Brien said. "I don't think they necessarily compete with each other. I think they'll bring different levels of experience... I look at it and think there are different tiers of this product and there are going to be different tiers of this VR world. One of the challenges we still have early on here is defining those tiers and letting people know what they are. Everybody thought Cardboard would be this ubiquitous thing that would just be happening very quickly and naturally, but in reality it's just become an intro piece [lasting] less than 5 minutes."

If you are unfamiliar with everything that is the HTC Vive, we have a little HTC Vive 101 video for you.

Trying to decide for myself when's the right time is to jump in on this tech. I have at least 1 more year with my 980ti before upgrade, who knows what that might cost or what's next at that point....Damn you PC always chasing something cool. Chicken or the egg?????? with VR, Chicken or the egg????

VR is really really damn good and fun. That 980ti should be pretty good in almost anything you throw at it. I'd really suggest jumping in on VR now, either the Rift with Touch controllers or the Vive are good optiond right now. Next generation tech isn't coming until at least late 2018 and probably even later than that so it's a good time to jump in.

I had no problems running VR on my 970GTX. With the new rift pricing i'd say it's worth it just for the experience so you know what youre missing. I shelled out $800 or whatever for the Vive just because I had to experience roomscale, but I could never recommend that to anyone. At $400 with touch controllers I can recommend the Rift to anyone with a PC capable of running it. If you had to buy a whole PC to go with it then I'd say pass and wait for a mobile all-in-one to come out.

Both, tough arguments, If you have a nice system. Id actually be "in I't" if I could get a "vibe" at that 400ish price. Not a "Facebook" fan er/or maybe just feel more confident in "Valve" holding it together.. I guess over "Oculas". I wish they didn't split the users, and considering what early adopters paid for the chance, it is cheap, but I need my money to be spent in the best way for my hobby:) Not always achieved, lol. (aka I buy stuff I don't need or use :( ) I will admit its only getting better and cheaper to get in, sooner... are my feelings as well.. Its just a matter of willpower and time for me:)

Keep in mind
1) You don't need Facebook anything to use the oculus, furthermore you can use your oculus to play games purchased on steamVR so if you'd rather support steam you still can. I do this, any game that isn't oculus only I purchased on steam instead

2) the vive is NOT steam, the vive is made by HTC and just happens to work the best with steamVR but again steamVR is a open platform that any HMD can access. Further more from what I've read HTC's post purchase customer support for issues is pretty poor for the vive

Purchase the one thats worth it hardware wise for you. The vive is going to have better Addon support (things like full body tracking) but the rift right now is a way better price right now for what you get.

Both are amazing systems at this point that both have tons of good points and will give you an awesome VR experience. It's up to you to go over the pros and cons but either way you won't go wrong

Also something to remember with Revive you can play oculus games on the Vive.

I have a Vive and love it. Even the fiancé loves playing it.

The only reason thats not currently happening is because they showed us their true monopolistic intentions and plenty of people (correctly) went with VIVES instead.

I am looking to get into VR for racing games predominantly and anything else interesting as i research more once the gear is in hand. But more to the point, is this 4k Pimax as good as I have been hearing about? I read somewhere the software updates are delivering, and now also provide usage with oculus gear.

399 with touch controllers made me bite, and i was waiting for an hmd that could replace my monitor. Just got my controllers and third sensor today, gonna be a fun night.

I read that its only 60fps and no roomscale/controllers. Considering the rift with those features being almost the same price i dont see how it compares right now.

well, it has a higher resolution and something about doors that the others have issue with?? Also, without controllers and roomscale, which can be used with rifts gear, for $286.99!! True 4k 806 pixels per inch? latency 18 ms, 53 mm lens adjustable too. People are reporting 5k VR with DSR and no SDE. It is capped at at 60fps tho instead of 90. But I suppose that would be the 4k limit these days anyways... It is for any game on most low latency sets and HDR anyhoot, which is what I run now.

Check this thread out, theres a littlt info in it

I have an Oculus and love it. I only get reminded it's a Facebook product when reading irrelevant comments on this forum. All things being equal, both Oculus and Vive are great devices, you can't go wrong with either. If you have a decent PC now, I'd jump on the Oculus at $400. 95% of my games are played through Steam, all without issue. Only run a couple exclusives through Oculus store.

I was a RIFT hater.... I bit for this 399 deal and have to say... Im blown away. Easy to set up awesome to use and its on par or better than the vive. I cut my VR teeth on the PSVR and when you see 1:1 touch input with the controllers you will poop your pants! RUN DO NOT WALK and buy this rift deal for 399!! the time is now

Honest to god, no shit, at $400, if you've a 970 or better, skip your next gpu upgrade and just order a Rift/Touch bundle while they're still on sale.

It's very, very good.

Even if you have to skip buying games for a month or two, the freebees are awesome in their own right.

Well, after much deliberation, that's exactly what I did. Should be here by the weekend too. No stores in my area had the deal available or in stock (I live an hour south of Silicon Valley), so I expect this price drop might really be great for getting these devices in peoples hands, and hopefully encouraging more support and such, to oculus owners. I was tempted by the Pimax but after research, it seems there isn't any solid info on 6DOF, and I believe the Rift excels in that area, albiet with screen door effect. But, SDE as people are saying, seems to go away naturally as you get "into" the game. So I'll try it out, as SDE isn't something I have seen visually before, and see if my fiancée and I can put up with it whilst racing online. I think it will be ok, this, then the playseat, then maybe tax time, a motion setup for racing.

On another note, windows has an augmented reality device in the owrks and as far as hyping goes, it seems pretty engaging with alot of sensors being built ight into the VR headset. There isnt any news on how exactly i will work with steam related gaming, the Forza series, and interoperability with anything outside of the windows universe, but I do know steam VR is mostly open source so thats a good sign. Unfortunately only dev kits are on pre-order at the moment and will be available sometime next month. I have a gut feeling the MS device might be what we've been waiting for, as far as decreasing motion sickness and bells and whistles, but still not 4k as of yet.

The SDE isn't an issue when you're busy ripping the heads off of robots.
LOL, you sound like you have been engaging with the Rift, is there any specific titles you would say are MUST have? Also too, have you tried Rift with any racing titles? And finally, any must have tools, tweaks or tips for the Rift? (along the lines of lets say, afterburner, or overclocking/tweaks that bring performance or image quality better than the standard?

For games:
RoboRecall (comes free with the headset)
Superhot VR
Echo Arena
Star Trek Bridge Crew
Space Pirate Trainer
Raw Data (people really seem to like it)
Rick & Morty Virtual Rickality (same as above)
Wilson's Heart and Lone Echo look neat but I have not played them or heard people say much about them.
For the next few days Oculus has some game bundles on sale for decent prices with some of those games involved. Might not be a bad idea to look into them.

For tools:
Oculus Tray Tool. It lets you add of super sampling to games from the Oculus store, lets you add a shortcut to Steam VR in the Oculus menu, and various other things. Its well worth getting for anyone with a Rift.

If you like the Rift I'd also suggest grabbing a third, or even fourth, camera to put behind you to expand the room-scale abilities. I'm planning to do that when my new VR space is all set up.

Not to Hijack this thread in any way, but maybe anyone here could save me some research time into a possible scenario I may encounter regarding duplicating the VR display onto a 49" curved 4k display? My issue is this. I have the EVGA FTW 1080. A decent card that OCed well, but now in hindsight doesnt have a feature I need. Can you guess what it is? No? Well, it only has ONE HDMI out. A DVI-I and display ports. HERE in lies my dilemma. For HDR with this crazy creators edition of win 10 as many know, is quasi-functional. I can get it to work CORRECTLY with a 27GBps HDMI monster cable. The standard 18GBps doesnt seem to display, HDR with all the colors and POP/lumen for whatever odd reason. And yes I have tried many many different cables. SO, there is not one HDMI splitter I can find that offers passthrough over the 18GBps "limit". Obviously, there is also not one diplayport to HDMI that I can find with throughput specs. I want to be able to duplicate the VR display onto the 2016 Samsung series 6 TV, but I would appreciate doing so, without the degradation of image fidelity. What to do?
