François Piednoël has announced that he will no longer be working at Intel. According to his Linkedin profile, Mr. Piednoël had been with the company since 1997, where he worked on a slew of processors including Katmai, Conroe, Penryn, and Nehalem, as well as SoCs in Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake. No, he isn’t leaving for AMD (or so he claims).

He didn't just claim hes not going to work for AMD, he said "NEVER". Reason given was that he would have lawyers knocking on his door the very next day (his words), and that hes worked on PC and CPUs for the better part of 20 years and its "time to do something different", which would suggest a rather large change for him if it's not dealing with PC and CPU design.

I would have to say that the mentioned items in the OP are architecture platforms, not specifically processors but I suppose people get the gist of the info, least here at the [H] people damned well better understand that terminology. :D

So what? He resigns. He is tired of doing processor development.
He probably has an NDA of many years so he can't be in processor business for a different company for quite some time after exiting Intel.

kudos to him. ive been doing a job which i have slowly began to hate over the years. its not easy wanting to do something different but having to end up working on something you have no passion for.

RIP Intel

Maybe he is the reason, or one of them, that explains why Intel seems to be unable to make new architectures that are more than 5% - 10% faster (IPC) than the previous design? So, could be good news he's gone, right?

1 out of 1000s of engineers makes no difference. And if people think IPC is easy to do...even Apple hit the wall.

When you are in his age, if you want to try something else you dream about its the time before its too late. Its a classic. You will most likely see him in a startup company in the near future.

So was he their Principal engineer, or just a Principal Engineer? Principal Engineer is a title handed out to a lot of employees at major tech companies. I am a Senior Principal Engineer at a major computer company but I don't think me leaving would be news worthy.

Ya, kind of an odd article... hardly newsworthy unless he was a Distinguished Engineer, but if he was one, I'm sure the article would have called it out. Otherwise, just another developer hiding in a large company for 20 years.

I agree completely. I feel fortunate that more than doing any one specific thing, I mostly like to help people. It gives me that White Knight sort of fuzzy you know?

So I like doing a good job for people. I like feeling like they are happy with my work, that I am looking out for them, etc. I could do a lot of things and still get that feeling ...... as long as it's not for Best Buy. I think the falseness behind the face would eat me alive as it shown through my face plain to see.
