A trademark application related to the controller suggests that a miniature version of the Nintendo 64 is on the way: similar filings were reportedly found before the Super NES Classic Edition was ultimately unveiled. I wonder if Rare’s games will be on it?

Nintendo has recently filed a trademark application for the Nintendo 64 controller in Europe, which given the timing might well indicate that a Nintendo 64 Classic Mini could be in the works for next year. Such trademark applications have also been filed for the NES controller and the SNES controller, so this logic does seem sound given that we now have a NES Classic Mini and a Super NES Classic Edition is on the way later this year. The “goods and services” part of the application references physical goods, too, which has boosted hopes further.

Brave. I don't think the N64 was popular enough for a classic edition.

Agreed. The n64 has some great games but the most memorable ones were rare titles. Besides the Zelda and Mario games (and they have been re released over and over it seems) what else could they put in there that would make you go "ooh yeah!"

If they would packaged most of all the games on a hard drive (ssd) and so you don't have to buy any cartridges, price it fairly and I would consider it.

Star fox
Mariokart
Super smash brothers
Banjo kazooie
Clay fighter
Conkers
Shadows of the empire
MARIO 64
Blastcorps
Pilotwings (definitely cool when the system came out)
I can keep going.

There were tons of gems on the N64

I was going to buy a nes classic for my gf but i never found one in a store then they canceled. I wish Nintendo hardware side would die and they would just sell games

I am just so fucking happy Nintendo is not run by Americans.... Oh oh.. we only sold 32 million N64 consoles, we gotta cut, give up or something... Oh oh, we made only 6 million profit this quarter, not the projected 8.5, this is exactly like a loss of 2.5 million, we gotta cut, play it as safe as humanly possible fire anyone with a vision, it's too costly!..

So they want limited runs.. that is actually also limited risk
.. I would think Americans will be all in with the strategy
..
It is the smart decision though in this case... If you happen to be butthurt for not getting one big deal. No I did not get one. Price is quite high probably another reason to make limited runs

I'm still using my old N64 controller with a USB adapter for all of my emulation needs. Would be nice to be able to buy a new one that isn't already 20 years old or a knock-off. Hopefully they sell the controllers separate from the console.

I respectfully disagree for me the SNES and N64 were the best nintendo systems

The cost is high because of after market selling and limited quantities. They are actually extremely cheap for them to make, hence the low MSRP. The limited runs is just them playing overly safe. When they saw the demand they should have kept production going. Since if you have a cheap product with great margins you sell as many as possible. I think that digital downloads on their newer consoles played a part in it though.

I was considering it high at 60 bucks.. I figured the hardware is very cheap. eBay is lousy with 500 in one knock offs... NES on a chip is as old as I can remember ( although I don't think they use that actually)

the only games i can remember playing over and over again were goldeneye and perfect dark.

both rare games both now owned by Microsoft.

do not want. wouldn't be able to get one anyway.

I don't feel the N64 had the nostalgia of the NES and SNES to be successful. I'm sure it will sell just not like the other 2

Well I'll be damned. Wait... it doesn't look like the original one. I've changed my mind, I will not take that Wii mini.

I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo will be unable to release goldeneye 64 for any emulator like this due to some legal reason I can't recall at the moment.

The others seem good though.

EDIT: Seems the reason is due to some complicated licensing issues between Microsoft who owns RARE, and Activision who owns the rights to James Bond games. If true, that could also rule out Killer Instinct as that was a RARE title.

Bomberman could still work though I think?

It's going to just have GoldenEye split screen multiplayer.

At this point, I think it'll sell for people looking to add to their Nintendo mini collectibles.

Would help if it could run the games at a higher resolution (720p is acceptable), with anti-aliasing, locked at 60fps

For the love of all things holy if this means I can get USB version of the controller direct from and of Nintendo quality!
I will be super happy and spend much money on them!

Goldeneye, Starfox 64 & Killer Instinct Gold are the only ones I can think of.

While this sounds cool. Its already been done. Project 64 has been our for a very long time and allows me to play all the games I want at 2 & 4K resolutions. Also, if I really wanted the N64 experience they do make USB Nintendo 64 controllers.

As for Goldeneye, well it was a great game at the time when it was released on N64, great , great memories of playing it with friends. That being said though, Goldeneye Source is the better game now, I'd say, if you're going to buy it just for Goldeneye, don't. Play Goldeneye Source for free.

I play Goldeneye Source now and love it great game. However not everything about it is better there is no option do carry dual weapons like you could in the N64. There is no sinple player campaign mode which was one of the best things about the original. Source version is multiplayer only.

Where Goldeneye source is far ahead of original is the mods a pc allows way more custom maps, and N64 maps that were actually finished or expanded and better graphics.

SNES yes. N64 noooooooo.

hehe sorry I was in highschool when the N64 came out.

I must have put 1000 hours into golden eye I got all the cheats without cheating. Then the highschool parties where we even had the chicks fighting to play mario kart then all the guys on killer instinct gold it defined an era for me. While the NES was great I was just alot younger it its prime.

I'd buy one just for Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 if they were both on it.

Would play some other games too but those 2 games alone would give me a few hundred hours of enjoyment easily and more than give me my money's worth.

I really question whether some of the games would actually be enjoyable to play. I can recall probably 10 years ago getting a group of friends together and trying to play Perfect Dark. We had an orogianl working 64 with the expansion memory packs and everything. What we found that the graphics and frame rates were so terrible we could hardly stomach playing the first level. We couldn't understand how we ever played like that. Maybe early gen LCD tvs played a role in how poorly the N64 graphics aged, maybe not.

What I do know is you can still plug in an old NES and get virtually the same enjoyment out of it that you did 30+ years ago. Some graphics just dont age well.

I would love a N64 Mini as the N64 is one of the few consoles not properly emulatiated by emulators. But, I doubt Nintendo can get games Goldeneye and Star wars Rouge squadron due to licencing issues. As for the NES classic shortage, licencing 3rd party games (looking at you Konami) might of played why the nes classic had a short production run. I hope the learned with the snes classic, Other wise it's back to using a retro pi for me!

Not sure how it would work with the rare games(which are on the xbox via rare replay now) but yea it had a bunch of good games. You also have wave race, that beetle racing game, the paper mario, etc. The n64 really had a bunch of good games.

Can't wait for the game cube mini!!!

I really wish they would release a system based off like the wii that looked retro and could download game packs via wifi/Ethernet. A system for people who don't care about being portable like the switch. Then sell retro controllers themselves that are usb. Let you buy gamecube, nes, snes, sega genesis etc controllers for it.

That is actually a real problem on games that were on the forefront of change. 3d on the snes for instance(or on the genesis). Even early 3d games on the saturn, n64, and ps1. The controls are not always as good and maybe of the games really didn't run well. The n64 actually did a little better here as it came with an analog stick although it was just one. Really the 2 sticks were what changed everything.

Games like perfect dark and golden eye aged the worst. Those and early saturn and ps1 games that didn't use analog controls(you ended up using the l and r buttons to rotate the camera on many).

That being said a bunch of games aged fine. Pilotwings would still be playable as would blastcorps. 3d platformers on the n64 had some camera issues but generally are fine. Mario 64 is a game that not only still holds up, it is a game that we can still judge other platformers against. I still think it is one of the best ones out to this day. Mario Kart 64 is actually faster than the newer ones and is still fun and controls well. You have a few racing games on the system that would still be good.
