Any way to silence the fan noise of those old video card like 6800 Gt?

The fan is about the size of a coin. Now it seems to be sealed. Can we add lubricant oil at the fan? And if so, would it silence the sound?

Water cool it.. look for old universal gpu water block. Danger den blocks.

if it used to be silent... then you are probably hearing it smack dust blobs. use canned air to clean it out

Clean it thoroughly and run a custom fan profile in Afterburner or the like, just make sure it's temps are staying happy

no, it wasn't silence in the past, that card as well as the slightly newer ones like the 440 is very noisy. And it's not hot, no gaming, just browsing on the internet. The problem is the diameter of the card, too small. The only thing I can think of is oil at the center, but it seems to be sealed.

computer fans tend to be non-serviceable. your only option is to replace the fan, although it may be cheaper to just replace the card. oil would attract dust and probably destroy it. something comparable can probably be had for cheap, you can probably ask here for the cost of shipping

how did you guys get thru that era of noisy fan on those video cards during gaming? I was using HP, so the noise of the HP is louder than the GPU fan noise.

Re apply thermal paste. Jerry rig a fan, or buy one that slots into an expansion slot like they used to sell. It's that or get after market cooking. All of it seems extreme given the age of the card

My hp was virtually silent with a GeForce fx5900 because every time I'd play a game the OEM 250w psu would shut off :D

Buy this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4RE4RT3299

It silenced my 6600GT just fine. And lucky for you, it's still in-stock!

Cause yeah, it was the era of 1st-generation silencing, with my Antec Sonata. Before that, computer fans weren't sexy unless they were loud!

And before that, gaming video cards were passive-cooled, or had relatively low-speed active coolers. Because they used 10-15w!

But those 6000-series cards use around 50-60w, but still use the same-old tiny HSF.

and yeah, 5th gen didn't give a F about silencing

Yeah, these companies that had zero experience on thermal solutions got dropped head first in the fire.

Card power consumption tripled in four years, and die size tripled because performance demand outstripped the measly 90 sq mm of the GeForce 2 gts.

Everybody forgets how tiny and low-power these chips used to be!

Something that I did in the past was ghetto zip tie a 120mm fan into my card after the stock fan quit. It was cheap, it was quiet, it was ugly as heck but it worked.

thanks for the Zalman and ghetto rig fan ideas, guys. I can get a basic video card for $35, and any video card today is more powerful than the 6800GT. So I'll dig around for a free fan at my basement and see if I can "shot gun wedding" the two
