A friend of mine just bought an open box Acer laptop with Windows 7. Unfortunately default profile has a password. The laptop came with no software whatsoever. I believe there is a restore partition on the hdd. What's the best way to go about to bypass the password or somehow reset it.

see if you can boot into safe mode and log on to the administrator account. sometimes it won't have a password set then you just do start > run > control userpasswords2

Also some of those retail boxes, if you mash f8 when you start htem up and hit "repair my computer", thats how you get to some of the recovery patition software. It will have your normal Win7 startup repair options but hten another option to restore the computer.

Windows 7 allows us to create a Windows password reset disk (USB key) in case that we lost the Win 7 logon password. When we lose the password of Win 7, we can reset a new one with the created disk. The weak point is that you can only create the disk before losing your Windows 7 password. If you do not create that, it could not help.

If you have an available administrator account on your system, you can get your password back easily. Logon Win 7 system with the admin account, and then you can come to the Control Panel and change or delete other accounts' passwords. Just three steps:

Step 1: Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add or remove user accounts

Step 2: Choose the locked administrator account

Step 3: Click Change the password or Remove the password. And then you can change or remove the lost or forgotten password

If you do not have another available administrator account, you could try some third party software. There is plenty of third party software for password recovery on Windows 7 online. all of them are designed to create a Windows password recovery disk. With the disk you can recover your lost Windows 7 password. I highly recommend Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 and use it as an example. What you need to do is just three steps (you need another computer to create the disk):

Step 1: Download Windows 7 Password Recovery Tool

Step 2: Burn a Windows password recovery disk with the software

Step 3: Recover the Windows 7 password with the disk

I think the most efficient is using third party windows password recovery software. Have a try.

^^ There are a lot of free tools, no need to pay for one.

OP - why not just to a factory reset just in case the previous owner did something weird? Or better yet a clean install.

To use an administrator account to reset your password
Warning: If you use an administrator account to reset the password, you will permanently lose access to any e‑mail messages or encrypted files that are on that account.

1. Log on to the administrator account that you will use to reset the forgotten password.
2. Open Local Users and Groups by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, typing lusrmgr.msc into the Search box, and then pressing ENTER.* Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Double-click Local Users and Groups, and then click Users.
4. Right-click the account that you need to reset the password for, and then click Set Password.
5. Type and confirm the new password.

Konboot works well, I just hope you're talking about a Windows password and not a bios/UEFI lock.

ohhhhh yeah it is. i was typing it in the search and nothing was coming up lulz. it works when I type it in the run box haha.

That's actually a typical example of the failure of the idea of 'you don't need menus just use search' attitude. And one example on how more and more windows is trying to obfuscate control for the end user.

MS decided your search results do not _need_ to include an administrative function.

I was going to recommend D.A.R.T. as it used to be a good tool but couldn't find any download links for any version of it anymore.

You're almost as annoying as qlat...

Though I think that distinction goes to Yantero, who restarted a six year old thread and thus summoned you to engage in more threadcrapping. B00nie, everyone knows you hate Microsoft. There's no need to reaffirm that in every thread about Windows. Consider, when I wander into the linux subforum, I try to help. That's even though I work at a company you've decided to make your "public enemy number one". I have nothing against Linux and use it for a number of things (my NAS, CTF competitions, various low to mid-power devices, etc), and I like it a lot despite its flaws (same goes for our products, for that matter).

If the mods aren't going to ban you for acting just like Formfiller did, I hope you can at least be mature enough to recognize that 80% of your posts are focused on bashing Microsoft and/or Microsoft products/involvement. Can you show me on the doll where the company touched you?

Why yes. It's right between the legs and on the behind. Not only they decided it's their privilege to start spying on me, I constantly have to spend time fixing things they break.

To be fair if Windows wasn't so easy for the average user to break then i'd have to find a different line of work. So while I may laugh at many of Windows faults it does pay my bills. Their shoddy product allows me to make an easy living. So keep on sucking Microsoft !

While I respect that you admit working for Microsoft it also makes me not trust a word you say. Just as I don't trust priests even though not all of them are rapists.
