Vega Rumors

So which 1080Ti to get? Since AMD has not shown anything remotely pushing top performance from Vega I think many can safely assume the hardware is not performing as expected. RX Vega maybe will do better but to expect it to go beyond 20% better over the FE is probably the exception or miracle needed with some rather good pricing to make it worth while.

Is the HBM shortage/difficulty still the primary guess why Vega is late?
Rumors were yields and HBM are fine, just performance concerns with lots of software work being done. Hence old Fiji drivers and the gaming part not launching while they focus on data center with Epyc.

Why would you wait? For anything? This is so much BS, if you need a card, buy it. Nvidia makes perfectly good cards that work just fine. Check out some of the reviews here.

And RX Vega hasn't launched, we don't know what it will look like, to assume makes an ass out of U n me. I wouldn't bet a quarter on any aspect of Vega RX except that it eats power.

But don't expect miracles, there are no miracles, this is technology, not church.

lol, what ever dude.

actaully totally missed this,

80mhz OC increased the power consumption of Vega FE 150 watts increase. Yep its frequency is being pushed way too high if we can even say competitive.

It will be interesting when the RX Vega releases, I still expect high power usage which is a shame. However I think AMD has been coy with the potential of this card, I expect the gaming card to perform quite a bit better. Will see if I am right or wrong when it launches but I think a 20% increase in fps is likely, then it will just come down to pricing. If it had not been for this crazy mining craze I would still be in the market for a card but my old 290x cards paid for a 1080 with change left over. I personally hope Vega can compete as it's foolish to want what happened in the CPU market to happen to the GPU market. To be honest I think the video card market has gotten to expensive on the high end yet where both companies fight the middle market had gotten cheaper and the low end actually has card that can run 1080p these days. Lets hope Vega can run at least 1080 speeds and closer to 1080ti the better, or we can expect the Uber Volta Founders Edition for $800+ coming. I just dont understand why some want to see either company fail.

I don't think anyone wants AMD to fail (well, competition to disappear). Most people i think are just trying to figure out the potential, figure out its impact, etc.

I don't see why people still expect hidden potential performance.

From the looks of things it's basically a Fury X with Polaris front-end and a 30-40% clock speed bump. Why would there be earth-shattering performance improvements?

Do note that so far none of the early reviews I've seen managed to even hit 1600MHz for any practical length of time, even when temps are in the 70s. I suspect the power circuitry can't handle the massive load, for some reason. That's interesting considering it's a $1,000 prosumer card. Why would that be the case? What incentives are there to cheap out on power delivery components?

I can't see any other potential reason as to why the card is not hitting max clocks. If you can sustain 1600MHz, that's another 11-15% performance, which will bring it squarely to 1080 performance. Not great, but more palatable. Pretty much no overclocking headroom, though.

Let's say 15% more performance for the gaming version for hitting max clocks all the time, and 10% more performance due to drivers. That's about 5-10% better than the 1080. That's a much better outlook for it, and if priced at around $530-550, will be quite a decent alternative to the 1080, especially due to the 16GB VRAM.

Let's assume the CLC edition will have about 100MHz headroom, that's an extra 4-5% over the 1080, which allows it to be priced around $580-600, same price as more expensive custom 1080 SKUs.

It's not doom and gloom for AMD yet, but this all hinges on the fact that Nvidia will sit still with their pricing. Personally I don't see any reason for Nvidia to react, since their lineup is still way better in pretty much every other way except for VRAM size.

I think the crazier thing is the OC temperature with fans running at 3700rpm.

By the time RX comes out Eth will probably crash and they'll have to sell cards cheap. ;)

Eth is not crashing. I think you mean to say it will become unprofitable but that won't be for another 6-8 months heck might be a year because so far their POS roadmap is all paper weight with nothing even in the works. Until that launches people will keep mining eth. And believe me miners will go after these cards if they are priced at 400. Eth is not the only coin you can mine.

I didn't say it was crashing yet but the mining craze will subside eventually and there will be an overabundance of cards.

"by the time these come out" was meant for mass availability. Usually takes AMD a few months after launch to really crank out cards it seems.

I am curious if this mining craze will be noticeable on AIB sales charts. Couldn't really tell too much during the bitcoin craze.

If this craze ends right when RX production increases it could be interesting to watch!

Because people think there is some untapped new hardware on the die that AMD just isn't using yet. Like this post which was heavily upvoted on Reddit:

Do you see that everyone, Vega actually has massive changes! Yet it still works with a Fiji driver :p

LOL it would be nice if more people understood drivers and hardware don't work that way. Has anyone seen multiple different drivers work for different hardware before?

Some one should ask the take to take hmm netgear pci-e network card of different generations and try to use the same driver......

he should know same driver base doesn't mean same driver.

We see this same #### every time AMD released an underperforming product.

I'd have bought an nVidia card long ago if they supported FreeSync. Right now my RX 480 is fine but if Vega is significantly better I'll grab that and sell the RX 480 if the market stays like it is now.

I think raja is probably over involved in marketing of Vega as well. This guy went on stage and said if you tune in until the end we have something special for you about Vega. Then he announced the name rx Vega, I had the biggest WTF moment ever...

Yeah seriously, what planet is he on that he thinks that ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE, sees that as any kind of revelation!?

I can only hope he was made to do it, because if that's his honest view of things, RTG is screwed.

LOL, they'd be better off with a box of tissues and a bottle of hand lotion. That's a miracle anyone can perform.

Freesync is a reasonable reason to look forward to a new card from AMD. If you're sitting on a 390x or Fury with a monitor of matching resolution how much would you gain anyhow? Those cards are already decent at what they do. If you're moving up in res, gsync is an option albeit slightly more pricey. But I hear this reason and I get it.

Yeah at this point I don't see myself getting Vega if these are the performance numbers. My Fury Nitro pushes 1440p at 75FPS(75hz monitor) no problem on most titles. I don't mind turning a couple settings down to hit 60 FPS.

Because hard forum is chock full of hilarious fanatical snowflake nematode brained crybaby spoiled teens. I question the age of most of the userbase on these forums literally daily with what I read on here.

In 2 days time you go from ...."

NewThe question is can it game well too? I guess AMD will just wait and let the reviewers spill the beans on gaming performance or lack there of for the price. I am sure it will game well except maybe not as well as a cheaper 1080Ti." -noko

To this?? You do realize that its only been two days and you already lost your hope?

This is a super entertaining thread fo realz

Who said I had any hope? ;)

Vega FE just is not a card for me, the Rx Vega's maybe - looking more for a Nano size one for SFF build.

I have multiple machines, video cards etc. Thinking of selling 7970, 290 and one 1070 - buy 1080Ti and put the other 1070 into the BioStar Rizen machine - would be upgrading one from a 290 to 1070, SLI rig to single card using 1080Ti driving 3440x1440 monitor which seems perfect and probably be putting money in the bank as well.

Understand now?

Except every miner would grab them up leaving gamers looking at each other.

Why would miners have more advanced access to the cards than gamers? I've bought video cards before, never had to check a box that said "Miner" or "Gamer".

And what's with Frontier Edition? Shortened to FE it's like the same acronym as the friggen Founders Edition Nvidia used.

I bet two of them are faster than a 1080Ti, brings back memories!

While nVidia doesn't support FreeSync's technology for screen tearing it really won't matter if you're running games at 1440P or higher because even with a 1080Ti you won't be busting 144FPS on modern games. The only time you MAY notice screen tearing would be on older games that the Ti can chew up and spit out.

Freesync / gsync isn't vertical sync.

Tearing can happen at any framerate, even fps=hz has tearing if you're not using a software or hardware sync method.
