Tom Cruise will be returning as Maverick in the sequel to his 1986 hit, Top Gun. Paramount Studios will be releasing the film on July 12, 2019, and Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy) is rumored to direct the film. Val Kilmer is supposedly interested in returning as Iceman, but he may have to put on some muscle, especially if they plan another volleyball scene...

Cruise said recently the title would be “Top Gun: Maverick” although Paramount listed the title Friday only as “Top Gun.” “Maverick” was Cruise’s character’s nickname in the film in which he played Naval aviator Lt. Pete Mitchell. The movie is the first title to land on the July 12, 2019, release date. It will open a week after Sony’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel. The original film, directed by the late Tony Scott and set at the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, was a massive hit with more than $350 million in worldwide grosses.

Give Val a break, he's recovering from Cancer.

Anyway, should be entertaining, even though Tom Cruise is a total nut job now. I did however enjoy Oblivion & Tron.

Hey I was as big a Val Kilmer fan as anyone. Heat is one of my top 5 favorite movies. His younger stuff was awesome too (Top Secret, Real Genius, Tombstone) But he's not looking so hot in that twitter pic. He's not fat anymore (he was a large mammal for a while) he just looks old and not well. Considering his career track record in the last... 10 years? He's going to have to kiss some serious Cruise buttocks to even get a cameo.

I assume Top Gun 2 will have Mav in the "older wiser veteran instructor pilot" role that Tom Skerritt did in the first one.

Ok I guess I do remember reading that. So in that case, he looks ok, he just needs to get in shape a little, and keep the shirt on.

Tom has been a nut job since the 90's. Hasn't slowed his career down any. In Hollywood, it doesn't matter how wacky someone is IRL as long as they can act well, etc.

On that thought but slightly off topic, I've recently been reading about and watching old movies of Peter Sellers. This man was a comedy acting genius, but a complete d-bag asshole in real life. No one really cares as long as you keep making movies that make money.

I think he was joking. The early reports last year was that the film would focus on drones or something like that - Maverick would be an instructor.

We'll see if that (hopefully) was scrapped.

Last I heard Maverick was going to fight drones......

And again, Hollywood proves it has no creativity whatsoever by making yet another sequel to a movie that never deserve one nor actually meant to have one.

After the massive failure of "The Mummy" reboot Tom's gonna need all the fuckin' help he can get at this point and the near future so, whatever.

At least it isn't a reboot. Getting rather tired of the same stories being retold over and over. I think we pretty well know how Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Hulk et al turn out.

Be interesting to see where they go with the story after 30 years.

Wow, Val lost a lot of weight (I'm sure fighting cancer will do that to you!) - hope he's in it and that he's a healthy guy. Always felt bad for folks that were super active and then can't be because of injuries/health problems etc. I don't mind sequels especially if they bring back the central cast.

No thanks.. No F-14 = no top gun. Yes the f-18 is technically superior, but it just doesn't bring to the table what the F-14 did for a movie.
You really think the Navy would waste an opportunity to release a movie that features the F-35 doing something besides breaking down?

So. Old Tom is going to stumble out of his Scientology lair deep in the middle of a thickly-forested compound, raise up an AA-12, and start blasting away at the Phantom 4s and Mavics buzzing the compound.

They might actually be able to make a half decent movie about that. An aging pilot from the days when men were men and had to ride into battle inside the airplane has trouble coming to grips with the shift toward unmanned aircraft.

"War is not supposed to be a goddamn video game!"

i'm expecting F35 and raptors in this one.

And tom's cruise couch jumping days on TV are long gone. What has he done in the last 12 years that indicates he is still a nut job?

You're kidding, right? The guy basically runs Sea Org.

No i'm not kidding its an honest question.

I don't really follow what he does in his personal life.
Tom Cruise is basically the lead spokesman and possible leader of scientology's "sea org" group, which is a wannabe militant group of weirdos who live on a cruise ship after having paid enough money to get the highest possible thetan rating or whatever to learn the "real truth", and it was Tom Cruise's video that got leaked from the church of scientology a few years back that sparked all of that crap between them and anonymous.

I expect the movie to use the F-35 (though curious if F-35B or F-35C), but how is the F-18 superior to the F-14? Are you talking about the Hornet or the Super Hornet? Wasn't the regular F-18 a budget fighter, basically the Navy equivalent of the F-16? Whereas the F-14 was an actual air-superiority fighter, basically the Navy equivalent of the F-15?

The term you're looking for is "multi-role." The F/A-18 and F-16 have the ability to attack surface targets as well as aircraft, which makes them more relevant in modern wars where the enemy's most high tech weapons platform is a Toyota pickup truck.

Whew! For a second there, I thought Hollywood had lost all its creativity and was just producing formulaic dreck.

There isnt an original idea in all of Hollywood.

All of the good writers have left and now work on television, because hollywood would rather release bad remakes and sequels than to take a risk and do something truly good.

On the one hand this saddens me, as it makes movies more or less completely uninteresting, but on the other hand I do appreciate the great television we have gotten out of it, starting approximately with Lost ~13 years ago.

he became an instructor in the first, got back with charlie, milf, and i read this shit is going to be more futuristic/computerized.

That's a lot like one of the plotlines of Macross Plus.

Well, let us put this into perspective. The fanfare the F-14 gets among the general population is from Top Gun. The F-14 is iconic to the average Joe because of that movie. If it wasn't for Top Gun, the F-14 would be as popular as the F-16, or F-18. Outside of aviation fans or model building nerds, Top Gun really the only exposure people had to military planes back then in terms of media. Video games have emulated this since the early days, just like FPS games did back in their younger days (emulate movies).

Now, will the new Top Gun have the impact of the original? I doubt it, so whatever plane is cast will not get the popularity the F-14 had. Likewise, the media blitz against the F-35 has already swayed people's opinion of it even though they don't know what it is or what it looks like. And it will almost certainly be the F-35. Just looks back at recent movies. They have been pushing the F-35 for years in some attempt to sway public opinion. It seems silly, but the military is actually trying to emulate the "badass plane" success story the public attributed to the F-14 due to Top Gun. You'll notice a lack of F-22s, Super Hornets, or anything else in recent movies with planes with F-35s filling the gaps.

It should be called Top Gun: Syria where this time a young Maverick wannabe (Ice Mans son) shoots down a Russisn jet and starts a diplomatic row and is shot down on his way back to base. The US and Russia are now in a low level war over the Syrian skies in a quest for domination and the stakes couldn't be higher! /cue Hollywood music

This requires Tom Cruise to come out of retirement by taking an F22 on patrol by knocking out Russian jets in the skies of Syria. Eventually he gets in trouble and is almost assuredly going to die but Ice Man slips out of the nursing home and steals an old f18 and saves Mavericks ass. On the way home both of them request to do a tower flyby but are told the pattern is full but they do it anyway. /cue Hollywood music
