The latest Darwin Award winner has emerged out of Minnesota: Pedro Ruiz III thought it would be a great idea to let his girlfriend, Monalisa Perez, fire a Desert Eagle round at his chest to determine whether it would be powerful enough to pierce the book he was holding. Who will play them in the inevitable biopic?

As part of a young couple's quest for YouTube fame, a 19-year-old woman shot at a book her boyfriend was holding against his chest, killing him at close range outside their northwestern Minnesota home. Ruiz held up the book — described by County Attorney James Brue as a hardcover encyclopedia — and Perez pulled the trigger on a .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, trying to see whether the bullet would go through, according to the criminal complaint. The Desert Eagle is described by retailer Cabela's in an online ad as "one of the world's most powerful semiautomatic handguns."

It took both of them to be that stupid. Should she really be punished for his part in this really stupid stunt?

Mind boggling how it didn't occur to either of them to try it out on just the book first.

Either way, I guess we have two less morons in society now. I may sound cold here but I have no sympathy for this level of shortsightedness.

At least they didnt have children.
That would have been target practice.

They do and 1 on the way!

"Another aunt of Ruiz's told WDAY-TV in Fargo that the shooting outside the couple's home on Hwy. 75, with their 3-year-old daughter nearby, was part of a stunt they intended to post on YouTube."

The article has ALL of the info:

The article covered that too:

"Soon after the shooting, Perez told a sheriff's deputy that it was Ruiz who had been pushing his idea for the video, which was recorded by one camera on the back of a parked vehicle and another on a ladder, according to the complaint. He had shown her another book that he had shot and the bullet didn't go all the way through, the charging document continued."

This idiotic tragedy is compounded by the fact these dolts procreated. One on the way and a 3 year old...

Whomever is going to raise them now can't be any worse, right?

I can just imagine the story they'll have to tell them when they are older. "Umm...mommy shot daddy to be on YouTube sweetheart, that' why Uncle Jimbo and I are your new mommy and daddy..."

Guess he wins the Darwin award, while she only gets an honorable mention.

Hopefully the kids will be raised by someone with a little more common sense while she's in jail.

So many things wrong with this stunt. Why didn't they try it out first? What if her aim was off? WTF? Gun control people better not use this as an example.

Cute couple. And tragic, by any measure.

An understanding of the scientific method is clearly lacking here, unfortunately. A brief "proof of concept" trial run with no one behind the book(s) would have saved a life.

Edit: Unclear if the bullet pierced the book(s), or if the impact against his chest was enough to stop the heart. Unless the book was really damn thick, it probably went right through.

Goddamn people, use your fucking brain!

But not for long. These two were thrill-seekers, and as they obviously aren't/weren't very smart, it would've been only a matter of time before something happened even if this event hadn't turned out the way it did.

read about this crap this morning... call me a terrible human being, but I laughed.

It's *that* stupid. And I have no sympathy for people who are dumb enough to try this or any other stunt that takes them out of the gene pool. What do people expect? the world is supposed to feel sorry for her? Taxpayers are now on the hook supporting her and her kid for the next 18 years (if they weren't before) She willingly went along with it.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Point taken. But my family has been dealing with too much death the last few years, and I simply don't wish that kind of grief on anyone.

Easy to make Darwin jokes 'n shit when the dead guy isn't anyone you know. Stupid stunt, for sure, but I'll not be amused by it. In the end, someone that was important and loved by those close to him is no more. I'll not make light of that.

Except your tax dollars are now going to pay for her to be in jail to the tune of $40,000+ per year.

Yea, to be honest....I laughed too....I mean how stupid is that, I am just amazed they didn't think anything could go wrong enough to have any idea to test it on just the book...I mean did they not realize how powerful a .50 calibur gun is?? SERIOUSLY???

And the funny part is during the video they were hoping this video was gonna give them more subscribers and views.....well i guess they are famous now.....idiots...and right in front of their kid too....OMFG

Whether anyone knows him or loves him doesn't change the fact that what he did was just about the dumbest thing one can do with a gun. His level of stupid remains the same and the result was entirely predictable by anyone with more than 2 brain cells in their head. Besides their gross misunderstanding of how powerful firearms are (especially a 50AE), seems they actually believed everything they saw in TV or movies.

If this was a stunt - the smarter way to go about it would have been to hide a 1/4" piece of steel in a hollowed out back portion of the book as well as use a custom shell with a reduced powder load, nothing you see on TV/movies/internet can be assumed as real. When I did my own reloading shells for my 50AE, standard load is about 32 grains of H110 powder.

The movie Idoiocracy seems more like a (rapidly becoming true) prediction of the future than a comedy.

And maybe.........without him holding it? Look at us, fixing shit.
To be fair, not that it makes it much less stupid, but they did test it without him holding it and he showed her that the bullet did not go all the way through.

Looking at her mugshot, she does kind of vaguely look like the Monalisa.

1. It was not the same book
2. Did he shoot it against something that held it? If it just flew away, the impact of the bullet didn't go through with the motion.

Either way, he asked for it.

Well, at least it didn't happen in Florida. Florida men (and women) get enough attention in the news as is. ;)
