It seems obvious enough at this point that a sequel to the NES Mini is in the works, but GameStop managers are supposedly blabbing about some kind of meetup they had with Nintendo representatives that confirms the SNES version’s existence. While there is still no word on release date, the product is meant to drive "headlines and foot traffic": stores have already been warned to prepare for long lines. One manager notes that these systems exist purely to “pander to that lowest common denominator with cheap sh*t and nostalgia.”

…I got to chatting with the store manager about Nintendo and their tendency to make things that people can't buy. He was surprisingly passionate about the topic. He even went as far as to call the company "F*ck-tendo" at one point. One thing led to another, and he eventually let loose with a story about how Nintendo had told him and other store managers at a "behind closed doors event" that a SNES Classic plug-and-play system was in the works. He specifically said that there was no release date for it, but that his guess was that it would "drop this holiday" and "would be made in short supply just to piss people like me off ha ha ha!"

I was never able to get the first one, so it's tough to get excited about this. I'm not going to chase crap like this, but if it's on a shelf then I'll buy one. Nintendo is so stupid.

Company that's worth $30B doesn't appear to be stupid at all.

Ensure your demand is higher than your supply on your products is one sure fire way to be successful as long as your supply never dries up and the demand continues.

But the supply does dry up, that's what upsets people. At 60$ I'd have bought at least 3 of those mini Nintendo's, 1 for myself and 2 as gifts. But they never touched store shelves around here, hell think geek (I think) was holding a raffle not to win one, but just to win the chance to buy one at MSRP. It's a joke.

Local supply might dry up, but Nintendo is shipping units as fast as they can produce them.

You're the minority if you're boycotting buying one because you can't find them in stock. Otherwise, they'll be in stock.

Nintendo isn't producing them. They discontinued it before it ever had a relevant amount of stock. I'm not boycotting it, I'd still buy one at MSRP I just won't pay silly eBay prices for one.

Oh damn. I didn't know Nintendo wasn't going to be shipping them to North America anymore. Guarantee's they wont have any unsold units this way I suppose.

Let's face it, even Nintendo can't make the real thing. I'd buy a new SNES if the hardware was true. Otherwise, my original hardware still works because they are tanks. I'll take BSNES/Higan over whatever emulator Nintendo comes up with because you know it won't be as accurate.

They could be riding a SNES version of this bandwagon: http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=78 but you know they will never do it.

Let them keep their Super Famicom Mini.

Right, so by that logic a large company makes no mistakes. Ok.

After reports that the first ones were selling for $400, and realizing that the demand was artificial, I didn't even attempt to go look for one. I brought out my old Wii, spent a couple hours modding it and cleaning the corrosion from the controllers(it doesn't take that long, I'm just retarded), then loaded onto it every single version of every NES game EVER. I imagine if I buy some classic controllers, I'll be good to go for the SNES games, too.

Do you want a cookie for playing illegal ROMs?

Cool story bragging about crime bro!

Nintendo hasn't quite mastered the supply/demand curve. You want it to be near equilibrium for maximum profits and reduced risks. They tend to under supply and/or don't work in a way to ramp up production for unexpected demand.

The only people who win when supply is choked and demand is high are the people reselling the items (price gouging). The original source is usually still selling at the original price wholesale.

Eh, I'd say it's more like infringement.

It's a crime legally.

Nintendo said "fuck it we don't want to make any money" and actually stopped production of the thing a while back. I'd have loved to buy one at MSRP, fuck paying 5X the price on Ebay.

Part of me wonders if they realized the golden goose they really had there, and stopped production just so they can bring it back later with even more money making features "app store" type thing perhaps, you can fit every single old school nintendo game in existence on these things but instead make people pay $5 each for them. Or something like that . This is like Tesla releasing 50,000 Model 3's when they have 400,000 pre-orders, and then saying "welp, we are stopping production, so fuck you very much".

No matter what the case, Nintendo can suck it. Whatever they come out with now doesn't interest me because they fucked up pretty bad with the NES classic.

Yeah - I could just build a pi emulator but sometimes you just want to buy it online, set it up in 3 minutes and be done, an easy affordable way to relive all those golden childhood years with my NES on a modern TV,

I would have purchased the NES one last year as Xmas presents - but sold out and supplies never came back. I couldn't believe they stopped production. "No, we don't want your money." I've heard people defending their decision, but you have to wonder how much money did they walk away from as they were selling out as soon as they hit the stores? Shrugs. Someone else got my money last year and not Nintendo.

The SNES is something I might buy if I see it. I'm not going to go to midnight launches or pay extra. TBH, RaspPi does a pretty nice job...

The really insane thing is how few of the extra controllers they made. The damn things are going for $150 or more on ebay if they are in the original US packaging. They're actually useful too, since you can plug them into a wii mote and use them with Wii/Wii U/Dolphin and they feel just like the original NES controller. I can't imagine how crazy it will be trying to get the SNES ones, which sucks because that was a great controller.

On a side note, why can't Sony or MS make a d-pad that equals Nintendo's 30+ year old tech? Is Nintendo seriously the only company that knows how to make a decent d-pad?

You can build a Pi 3 emulator that's actually better than this thing. If you're lucky you will be able to find mass produced NES / SNES Pi 3 cases for around $15. Wireless controller and you're good. I have one and it's amazing.

My son wants this and he's 9 years old. He wants it because there are a LOT of glitches/hacks that can only be done on original nintendo hardware and not emulators. I'll probably wait to see if this is still true with this model, if it's still even available after I read reviews :S

I dont get it, just get the roms. You can literally have all the games of the entire 8-16bit era on one usb stick. Why bother with these things?

The form factor kicked the nostalgia up a notch or 10. Not breaking the law is also pretty cool.

Cheap shit and nostalgia indeed. These devices should be nothing more than silly promo giveaways at event and shows.

Like that piece of crap that had all the Atari 2600 games on it. "Oh wow how cool!" the gullible cry.

They go out and buy this crap, it's used for 15 minutes until the realisation sinks in that games from 1980 are crap!

Some stuff should just stay as a happy memory or, if you were not born then...legend.

AMD cards have been OOS for a month. Not the most profitable business model. If demand is higher than supply, those who cannot get the product will get something else.

Everyone complaining about "illegal roms". You guys are hilarious. Get off your high horse. Nintendo decides to produce an item that MANY wanted. They then decided to stop production with a high demand still in place and say it will not be produced anymore. You really are going to talk shit on those who get the shit "illegally"? Get the fuck out of here. Nintendo could have sold units to many people who decided to do that but they made the decision to stop producing the item while in high demand.

Their dumbass fault.

I would gladly pay for legit copies of every NES game I've played as a kid, and the ability to play them on a console like this thing. But clearly, Nintendo would rather that we resort to roms and emulators for free, instead of throwing money at them. I would gladly make it rain on Nintendo to play all my NES and SNES favorites again.

I still have my original NES and SNES. And I've got like 200 cartridges for them. And they still work. Yet I still play more roms than the cartridges.

as long as you own the game you're ok. even if you don't.

really, in your case it's more about convenience i bet.

Except it's not original hardware.
The mini NES is an ARM CPU running an emulator.

My expectation is the SNES mini will be nearly identical internally with different software/roms/facade.

Still if it's got a Link to the Past, I'll buy the damn thing and say thank you on my way out.

I am thinking of getting the Famicom Classic and NES classic before they go completely out. They are asking for about $100 and $130 respectively (after taxes), which I think were the original asking prices anyhow.

I am in the same position, and I do the same thing.

If for nothing else, playing on a controller of your choice (I like the SNES pad layout better than the original NES pad layout), custom filter (of your choice) and being able to carry it with you are big pluses that the NES and SNES never was able to achieve, unless you count GBA as 'portable' SNES.

I was one of the lucky ones to get NES Classic via Amazon Prime Now. It has NEVER been used or connected to a TV. It is sitting in its original box behind my TV in my living room. If they do make a SNES version, it is going to be even harder to find as I believe most people from my generation have fonder memories of the SNES compared to the NES, which means lines will be even longer or people camping out longer than they did for the NES. My guess is they will make more of the SNES versions, but we'll have to wait and see.

Looks like Nintendo confirmed it.

Wait... Starfox 2? So many games I love will be on it...

Must resist the urge.

Go fuck yourself, Nintendo. I'll be happily utilizing my Raspberry Pi, while you continue to throw out some bullshit supply issue explanation when nobody can get one of these.
