LG G6 Warranty extended to 24 months

Ouch, I haven't even heard of potential issues with the G6 so far and they're being proactive about something that might happen, that's honestly not a very good sign at all.

This scene illustrates this situation considering how LG worded that statement on the page that link above goes to:

I bought a brand new G5 for $120 last year and that's still too much lol

I got my G4 for $50 after rebate and discounts... and that is still too much.

Piece of crap just died on me while I was using it... completely dead.

And my sister-in law had here V10 start messing up on here and then completely die a couple weeks before that. She sent it in for non-warranty repair and it took them 3 or 4 times shipping back and forth to get a fully working phone back.

Not only are their phone huge piles of trash, but their repair service is horrible as well.

LG will fix the G4 if you register it with them, just fill out the info at their website and say you bought it in December 2016 or something (something that's will within a 12 month period from from the day you intend to contact them about the issue) and they'll send you a FedEx shipping label, drop it off, a week to ten days later get a repaired one back (and these days they're shipping back devices with brand new motherboards made in early 2017 that do NOT have the bootloop problem anymore), all at no cost to you.

Or, send it my way, I'll be happy to take it off your hands for shipping. :D

I've had 7 LG G4's in the past 2+ years since they came out and two of them suffered from the bootloop, both repaired in under two weeks, never had issues with 'em again myself up to the point where I sold 'em, no idea if the new owners ever did but they never contacted me to complain. Never had issues with LG's customer service myself, I chat 'em up online, get what I want, all done.

Thanks for the tip. I just registered it and will do an online chat when they are open.

I wasn't about to send it in and pay more to maybe get it fixed than what I initially paid for the phone.

It isn't the boot loop issue that is so common. It is just completely dead. The most I have been able to get it to do is to show the LG logo and then it just blips off again like it has no power at all. It will only do the LG logo thing every once in a while. Usually it doesn't do anything at all.

You should give it a few days for the registration info to kick in, it doesn't actually kick into their servers immediately even in spite of it showing on your account info. Go online on Tuesday or whatever - do NOT call them on the phone - and use the online chat support system, explain the situation, they'll ask the obligatory questions, you play dumb and play up the fact that the phone is a necessity and you have to have it fixed (typing over them even as they're trying to help you by spitting out their scripted responses), they'll ask more questions, then finally get to a point after a few minutes of just "Fuck it, ok, we'll fix it..." but you can't let up on 'em. :)

And yes the issue you're having is part of what causes the bootloop: the solder holding the SoC (the Snapdragon 808) onto the motherboard was defective and over time by heating and cooling it develops micro-fissures just as pavement does in summer (heating during the day, cooling at night, develops cracks/potholes), same principle, then it gets to a point where there are enough of them to prevent proper electrical flow and then it's dead.

So, give it a shot, complain, complain more, if you get someone that won't help ask for their supervisor, etc, and so on till it gets done. It's a good phone, it really is, and yes it's mucked up that LG allowed that to happen over several models (the G3, the G4, the V10, the G5, the V20 it seems might end up with some issues but hopefully not, possibly even the G6 now as well, and the Nexus 5x) over a period of years. Most folks just toss the phones which is sad to me 'cause it's my fave phone so whenever I find a "dead" one I do what I can to take it off the owner's hands when possible and I know I'll get LG to fix it.

Not everybody is as stubborn or focused as I am I suppose, but when I chat online with some support for whatever product, I get what I want, got an excellent track record with that. ;)

If they were having issues extending the warranty is the opposite of what they would be trying to do. This is showing faith in their product. Essentially saying here we'll give you an extra year coverage because the failure rate is low enough that's it's going to have minimal cost to us.

That was my take on it as well. Hard to see a downside for the consumer here.

LG has not had the best rep ...but besides this extra free warranty there are other indications that things are really going well for them and their products .

The G6 has been received pretty well without a myriad of issues ..seems very solid overall . The last go around LG released multiple handsets with nougat before HTC and Sammy without incident and to this day am convinced the Note 8 ill release was rushed to beat the 'Android N announcement' so they could release it with Marshmellow without looking dated . I love my V20 and it is the real deal ..the Anti Samsung ..although the V30 looks like it will be more G6 with DAC vs the product I have been using and the V10 predecessor

The other thing is that Google has tapped them again for the Pixel 2 release even though that was slated to be another HTC ..

Well, if a company made a phone with pretty much the same internals as they did one year ago and took out the useless gimmicks, I would sure hope that they get this one right...

As for the Pixel 2, the rumors is HTC is still making the Pixel 2. The HTC Pixel 2 XL is rumored to be cancelled for a LG made device, which is likely to take over the name of Pixel 2 XL.

How are people liking the G6? My wife managed to shatter her Galaxy S7 screen and needs a new phone ASAP. It's down to the G6 and HTC U11, and it seems like they're borderline equals with only minor advantages over one another. Anyone have a contrarian opinion of either?

my g5 is the worst pos i have ever had, not going for another lg phone for a while

I love my G6. No issues at all for anyone I know with the phone and there are a bunch (I work for one of the big carriers and lots of employees have it)

Wife's LG G4 started to bootloop today... ugh.

If you never registered it with LG, go to their website now, register it for the warranty, say you bought it at a (whatever your carrier is) store in December 2016 (pick some date, doesn't matter but make it December 2016). Wait 3 days, then go back to LG's website, go to the support section, go to the online live chat support, tell them the sob story that you bought it for your wife as a Christmas present (see how the December thing works?), they won't even ask you for proof of purchase, they will email you a FedEx shipping label, take the phone to a FedEx stop in your area (assuming you don't live in Bumfuck, Idaho or something similar, they will have a box for you made just for smartphones, they'll print the label, package it, ship it out, no cost to you.

LG will replace the mainboard in the device with one manufactured in 2017 (within the past 5 months) and it will not suffer the bootloop problem (at least so far none of the 2017 mainboards have been reported has having failed yet but I suppose it's possible at some point in the future, who knows). In 7-15 days you'll get the G4 back, no real problems at all in the process.

LG knows they're defective, if you contact them they'll fix it BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE IT REGISTERED FOR WARRANTY WITH THEM, not with the carrier, done exactly as I just explained - you do it yourself (will need to create an LG website account but that takes mere seconds). The trick is waiting 3 days before you contact them for support as it takes time for your registration info to propagate into their servers but once that's done (3 days, max, from the time you do the registration) you'll be good to go. Play it off, play dumb in the chat, say it's your wife's only phone, etc, it has to work, you get the picture, whine a little in the text - DON'T CALL THEM ON THE PHONE, only do this in the online live chat support where all this is done in text only - and wham bam thank you LG in ~7-15 days you'll have an almost new LG G4 to work with.

This process has worked for me about 27 times now, seriously, I buy bootlooped G4 devices strictly because they're defective and LG needs to fix them because they're defective, it's that simple.

Of course if you don't want to go through this process I'll pay shipping to take the bootlooped G4 off your hands too. :D

JerryRigEverything is a Youtuber who torture tests phones, G6 passed with flying colors while the U11 snapped in half.

Needless to say I went with the G6.

Those are the top 2 Androids right now and each has its pros and cons.
G6 has smaller bezel, headphone jack, probably cheaper
U11 has faster chip (Snapdragon 835), best camera, more internal storage

If you don't care about the headphone jack get the U11. Otherwise get the cheaper one.

I bought the G6 before the U11 came out. Unlocked version us997 and it has been excellent.

She took the plunge on the G6. Best Buy has the unlocked version for $100 off right now, plus it should lack the carrier bloatware from AT&T and/or Verizon. The headphone jack was actually the the deciding factor since she has a nice set of Senns that she really likes. She's got a 64GB sdcard she'll be porting over from her Samsung, so storage is a non-issue.

It's supposed to show up sometime this weekend and I'm probably more excited than she is. I'm stuck waiting for the Pixel 2, but if this phone is lean enough on the bloat I might end up getting one, too.

Which carrier? I had difficulty getting it activated on Verizon. Also, had to go to Verizon website login to activate HD calling option, and after that turn HD on in phone settings.

LG has a little bloat but this appears to be less than Samsung. Also, I think that manufacturer bloat is not bad compared to carrier bloat. Less buggy in my experience.

She's on AT&T for the moment, but we've tossed around eventually swapping her over to my Verizon account.
I was reading a review of the phone and they specifically mentioned a dozen AT&T forced apps, so that didn't sound very appealing. Especially if she ever does jump ship to Verizon with the same phone.
I've activated 2 vanilla phones on AT&T and both were pretty painless. I had to drop in to the AT&T store and grab a SIM card for one of them, but that was as bad as it got. Hopefully this will be as easy. Their online chat team is pretty good these days, so I'm hoping that'll be enough.

I contacted LG, but they did not ask about warranty or registration. I have not registered the device, and it was purchased Nov. 2015. They are fixing it for free. Only conditions they made were that there could be no evidence of physical or water damage, and it couldn't have been purchased 2nd hand (I needed to provide proof of purchase). That's it.

Update on my bootloop G4, purchased in Nov. 2015. LG fixed it for free, and sent it back in less than a week.
