Would a NAS be a good option for me?

Hey there!

I've been considering getting a NAS for a while now. But granted I have a very low income, it's a lot of money for me, so I wanted some input before I pull the trigger. I have looked a bit around in different stores and websites to try to get a feel at what I want.

The primary use for my NAS would be to store movies and TV shows, that I could then access on my PC, my girlfriend could access it on hers, and we could easily access it on our TV as well (Which means the NAS needs to have a HDMI output I assume). I'm running out of space on my own PC currently, and instead of having to buy a new harddrive for this one, I thought maybe it'd be an idea kill two (Or several) birds with one stone. Get more space in the way of NAS (Although be it more expensive then just getting a single harddrive for my PC). Thus at the same time freeing up space on my PC by moving stuff on my NAS. And by finally getting a good and more permanent solution for me to finally be able to watch movies on my TV, instead of always on my PC.

Now I've looked around. From what I've already seen, there exists NAS with and without preinstalled HDD's. It looks to me, and for my needs, to be far cheaper to find one with some preinstalled HDD's already. If I go the way of a NAS, I'd as already mentioned like it to have output for my TV. I'd like it to be at least 4 TB, preferably 6 .4 bays would be awesome, but I realise with my pricerange, 2 bays might be my only option.

I was hoping to pay no more then $300. But I'm willing to up it to $450 if that's what it takes. I live in Denmark, so it needs to be available here. We do sell Synology and QNAP here though, I seem to see those names pop up a lot here around the forums. But they're also a tad more expensive I see, and might also just be overkill for me.

You might ask with my limited budget why I just don't build one myself? I honestly probably wouldn't mind. I can put together the parts for a PC no problem. But I was leaning towards a prebuild (?) NAS server for 2 reasons at least. One being space, the second being ease of maintenance and hopefully installation. I don't really need to have a server running for anything else, at least not something I see right now, so I don't know if it'd be so much cheaper for me, or smarter, to build my own server.

Apologies for the rambling, I hope someone can guide me a bit.

Thanks!

If anyone is interested, I ended up finding out that it was probably more expensive then I had originaly thought and planned. I ended up dropping the whole thing, and decided to maybe wait out for some sales, hoping we'd have something once in a while here in Denmark. As luck would have it, they had one this weekend on a QNAP TS-451A-2G that I ended up buying. I think it has everything I wanted, even including good reviews. Hopefully it'll suit my needs, and I think that next month I'll be picking up a few 3 TB WD Red 5400 RPM so I can hopefuly get this thing up and running.

Plan how much data you add per year and how long you want it to last before upgrade. You'll probably want bigger than 3TB drives.

I'll most likely want bigger then 3TB drives at some point. But it'll more then likely be years into the future. I'm planning on buying 2 right now, and when/if I need more I can always add on 1 or 2 more drives. And after that, I can start buying bigger drives when needed. Of course I could be wrong in my predicted needs, but keep in mind it's for home/private use only.

Nice find on the QNAP, it should work well for your needs.

I was going to suggest an HP MicroServer with your budget: https://www.amazon.de/HP-ProLiant-MicroServer-G1610T-SATA-Server/dp/B013UBCHVU/

But than I read your response and it looks like you're set.

Thank you none the less for the suggestion though! :)
