Earlier leaks revealed what AMD’s new server processors would be packing, but the EPYC line is now official: the company showed off the new chips at an event in Austin, Texas, which feature up to 32C/64T Zen cores, 2TB RAM, and 128 PCI-E lanes. The AMD channel has a number of new EPYC-related videos up, one of which describes the transformative power of their processors in one-socket and two-socket servers.

Looks neat. THey should include TDP comparisons. Lots of less new machine rooms reached the point a while ago where server density means you are power limited or HVAC limited. Looks like they are running on par with the compared intel processors, and the projected TDP for the more cores verison for intel seem to be pushing similar numbers.

Wow... with these numbers I may be able to go from 6U of server down to 2, while still managing an overall upgrade in performance.... I look forward to seeing these in the wild.

I'd love for Lisa to be edgy as the name epyc and just Drop the Mic on stage.

Has anyone told AMD that that's not how you spell "epic?" I really think someone should let them in on that.

16 cores for $650? WOW... That seems like an insane shot across the bow for Intel. They're asking $2000 for their 18-core chip.

If you check the SQL licensing cost its anything but smart at those clocks. For SQL you want lower count of faster cores due to the cost. 24 cores with SQL standard is around 44000$ roughly in list price.

... and this is one of the reasons i completely kicked MSSQL to the curb for postgresql after over a decade of experience with MSSQL. that and postgresql is awesome. but seriously, who needs to be wasting productive thought cycles on licensing crap? and no, i don't want to hear about support issues - businesses should hire competent people and not have a culture of paying for someone else to blame. unleash the cores!!!

epic is trademarked but epyc wasn't so there you go.

If their server level 16-core CPU's are $650 - $750 ... how much is their HEDT Threadripper 16-core CPU's going to be?

lowest one was around 599 and the most expensive was around 850. rumored prices were posted in another thread i'll try and find them. thread ripper will have higher clocks but not the same warranty/support service that companies get with enterprise processors which is why you probably won't see any of them go with threadripper.

welp can't find it and only number i'm seeing is 850 for the 16/32 processor.

I just can't see a 64 PCIe lane 16/32 HEDT grade CPU costing more than a 128 PCIe lane 16/32 server grade CPU. I am half expecting to see Threadripper being even cheaper than the rumors.

That's a terrible name.

Sounds like something a highschool student would come up with :p

I was a high school student, you're correct. Hey at least I graduated, none of my friends my age did. They all dropped out. No MegaZen for Them!

Epyc just sounds.... I dunno. But this is also from the fine minds that coughed up such awesome brand names as Phenom and Radeon. On the other hand/brand, names like Skylake and Ivy Bridge are wacky too.

So there are no good computer part names, let's agree to disagree.

I know Lisa Su is not hot and blond, but why isn't the media abuzz with this woman CEO? Seems to be doing a pretty good job of putting AMD on a different track.

I suppose your comparing to Marissa Mayer, Yahoo is a lot bigger (and interesting) than AMD. Maybe if AMD actually pierces the blue giant, she's get a lot more talk.

+1
If you are running Microsoft SQL (or any software with core based licensing), the software costs can easily out way the cost of the hardware.
From a cost standpoint it usually makes more sense to go with less/faster cores, and move any other processing (like a web server/app server) to a different box.
