I'd like to setup a local PBX server. I currently have Verizon FIOS. Digital Voice comes with it which should be VoIP. It's my understanding this requires using regular analog phone to which the ONT acts as the VoIP gateway to then convert to digital--is this correct? Is this doable, and how would I set this up? I just got service and haven't bothered to buy a phone yet. Could I buy an IP phone and connect via Ethernet cabling, or would this not work or would it just not work when simultaneously using an analog phone?

i think they provide digital voice to you as what's called an "FXS" port... that's "plain old telephone system" or POTS term...

what are your goals here?

the simplest way to get phone service is to plug a typical phone into it (your typical "POTS" phone with an FXO port)

if you want to use a PBX server with that service, you'd need that server to interface with the POTS somehow, this can be done many different ways, through a network gateway, or an interface card, etc...

maybe you don't want the complexity of an on site PBX though, i used to have one at the house because I used an online IP Telephony service provider (voip.ms), but they provide so many PBX services, now i just have the 3 extensions in the house configured directly to voip.ms, it's simpler and i don't have to admin a PBX on site...

Main goal is to be able to record all phone calls and keep a record of them. This will be for my job. Customers never like to pick up their phones and will lie that we never called them or that they tried to call us. Would love to play these recordings in front of their face if needed. Also would be good measure for legal purposes and to cover my ass if it comes down to it. Ideally it would integrate into my CRM and automatically notate who called who and when. Would like to be able to bring up their record automatically when receiving a call to save time. Having to always ask people for their name can be huge waste of time especially when it's something weird or I can barely understand them. I'm thinking of using FreePBX.

One or two extensions could do. Doing an in-call transfer or extension to my cell phone (call forwarding) would be nice, but I think I could live without.

if i was your consultant i'd strongly suggest paying for a service, maybe one that's gauranteed to work with your CRM

Working with CRM would be nice but not 100% necessary. It's my impression PBX cloud-based service is expensive. Slapping up a cheapo server seems way more cost-effective.

You could setup a 3cx pbx with an analog phone port connected to the Verizon device.

It would be a VOIP -> Analog -> VOIP conversion but may work, then you can hang as many IP Phones off the 3cx as you want.

Some states require permission from both parties before recording a telephone conversation.

you can use freepbx but its going to be a project

not sure how much skills you have with linux admin

you'll need a gateway, cisco/linksys has a cheap 1/2 line unit, then you'll need a couple terminals, yealinks are well recommended for cheap but good quality

if you have a vm infrastructure you could virtualize, if not, a raspi could easily run 2 extensions
