The second generation of Pixel devices was going to comprise three different sizes of phones, but now that is down to just two: Google has reportedly terminated their “muskie” phone, which was meant to be the successor to the original Pixel XL. Instead, the even larger “taimen” handset will adopt that role. My guess is that Google thinks those who want a larger phone will get the largest one anyway, and that the current XL just isn’t big enough.

The good news? That doesn't mean there won't be a new Pixel XL - just that it's not going to be muskie. You may recall earlier this year that Droid-life rumored a device codenamed taimen that, according to DL's source, was bigger than both muskie and walleye. We're fairly confident that taimen is actually going to be the 2nd-generation Pixel XL, and that muskie was shelved for an unspecified reason in favor of the larger taimen. I can speculate as to why, but to entangle that speculation with things that we actually know and feel confident in isn't something I'm comfortable doing in a post like this.

Well that stinks... (get it? muskie? STINKS?? HAHAHAHAHA....) Anyway, I have a pixel XL and I think the size is absolutely perfect, any bigger and it wouldn't fit in my cup holder or many other spots. oh well, guess I'll hold on to this one for a while!

As long as they don't mess with the current Pixel (non XL) size then I'm happy. I find this form factor to be the best for the smaller option and the fact they're not lowering specs like they did with the 5X, I'm satisfied.

Hmmm. Guess I'll just see how big the normal one is. The current Pixel is fine by me, although it's a hair smaller than my current Moto X. If they bump it up a little, that's more than fine by me.
Definitely not interested in the giant one.

Larger? I thought we were getting away from this:

I personally haven't had much use for smartphones, but I have been using an iPhone 5s for testing purposes at work. I think that size is just about right.

I too have the Pixel XL and love the phone. It's just the right size for me, and I won't be upgrading to another phone anytime soon. This thing should last me another 2-3 years easily...

No fucking way I'm getting a phablet. Nope. I enjoy keeping my phone in my pocket (y)

That's kind of why I like the S8+ - the shape/form of it means it still fits in my pocket no problems at all, despite the large screen.

I was very close to getting a Pixel XL, but it was a huge downer for it to have the exact same size screen as my 5 year old Galaxy Note 2 (5.5") when I really wanted something bigger.

Stop wearing girl pants. I can even fit my 8" tablet into most of my pockets no problem.

That reminds me of my 25-30 year old Mitsubishi 32" rear projection TV. Overall dimensions means that it actually takes up more cubic space than my 55" Samsung 4K TV. Guess that means the 55" is a smaller TV, right?

i have a pixel xl, its just big enough. I think a phone that's even bigger might be a bit too much.

pixel xl rocks though

I bet someone's still rocking cargo shorts and jamming out to the latest DMB tunes.

They will need to do something about the two years new OS releases per phone life if they plan to continue pricing them at the same prices as an iphone.

I was ok paying semi premium price for my now abandoned N6 and N9, but at current pricing, I can't justify them.

Lets hope project treble fixes this.

Woof, and I didn't even have to say it.

Let's get some tampons for those tears of yours after that sick burn

Whatever makes you feel better about your small phone. I'm trying hard to figure out why I should be embarrassed about not having tiny pockets and I'm coming up empty. I guess small pockets are OK if you carry a purse.

Ridiculous.

The XL is already too large.

Perfect phone size to be handled in one hand is 4.8" in my large hands. I don't even like the 5.2" class phones.

I guess you have small hands? Look it as a plus, it makes everything look larger..

Do the thumb reach test. Hold the phone in one hand, bottom corner of the phone firmly in the center of your palm (to reduce risk of dropping)

Now reach with your thumb and try to touch the opposite top corner of the phone.

If you can't, the phone is too big.

They were calling you fat.

As a dude with a 34" waist I can fit a phone that measures 7"x4" in its case perfectly fine into my pockets. In dickies it doesn't fit into the back pocket-- but they have a cellphone pocket. But I wear a suit and it slides perfectly into the breast pocket.

Bring on the jumbo sized phone.

I guess not all of us can be short dudes with 28" waists.

Hey now, we can't all be hipsters with super tight skinny-jeans/pants. :p

I wear normal relaxed fit khaki-style pants (W34, L34 if anyone I enjoyed wants to buy me a pair) most of the time, and while it is a little tight, even my old Nexus 7 tablet can slide into the pockets.

Pocket size shouldn't be an issue unless you are some sort of trendy fashion weirdo who likes tight clothes.

The problem with large phones is single handed use and being able to reach the entire screen with only your thumb.

Even with my long fingers the reach on a 5.0" standard Pixel is precarious...

IMG_20170613_172451.jpg

As you can see above, with the bottom corner snug in my palm I cant even reach the top corner on a 5.0" phone.

IMG_20170613_172443.jpg

I have to slip the bottom corner out of my palm as seen above in order to be able to reach, and I absolutely hate that.

Conclusion, a 5.0" phone is already too large. Anything larger than that is just crazy.

Being able to reach the entire screen with my thumb single handed is a basic requirements to me, and it pisses me.off that phones keep getting bigger and bigger as it means that often times only budget models are made in reasonable non-gargantuan sizes.

I want a 4.7" top of the line specced phone, and sadly I fear I'll never see one again.

(And yes, as an aside, on the rare occasion I wear shorts, I do wear cargo shorts, and there is nothing wrong with that. I - for one - can't think of any better shorts to wear! I have no interest what so ever in that tight fitting trendy hipster shit.)

I think i have average-sized hands, and I wear pants with rather large pockets, but I still prefer smaller phones. The way I use my phone, I don't have a need for a larger screen, and all else being equal, I prefer to have more room (and less weight) in my pockets for other stuff. Smaller screens also have the benefit of providing longer battery life and better (benchmark) performance, since there's less screen and a lot fewer pixels to push around.

Sadly, the only decent options I'm seeing are Sony Xperia Z-series compact, if I want a flagship processor and >=2GB of ram in a phone shorter than 130mm tall.

Yea that's about as big as I can go with it fitting in my pants with everything else I throw in my pocket.

Am I the only one here who likes the idea of a bigger phone so I can read what is on the screen? My eyes aren't what they used to be and I find myself having to increase the font size.

I'm can't wait for the Pixel 2. This old S4 is on its last leg. Already popped out the faulty switch. Now using soft buttons.

Nope, I'm with you.

On a Moto G4 Plus now with a 5.5 inch screen. I want a 6.5 inch screen in the future lol. 16:9 screen though. I don't like these tall, narrow phones as of late. Held the S8+ in my hand, felt too small with its aspect ratio.

I'm stuck in a normal 'ol stuffy office where we have to wear Dockers and such. Those big ass phablets aren't fitting in my normal off-shelf 34" waist Dockers. They also aren't fitting in my normal 'ol REI shorts that lack the dozen or so useless pockets cargo shorts from the 90's had.
It isn't skinny jeans or "those damn effeminate kids" that keep people from rocking a laptop in their pants.

Ditto.

I wear pretty generic classic office business casual. Actually rocking a pair of W34 L34 Dockers khakis right now.

I'm not sure why you are having problems. I do not have a phablet to test with, but for testing purposes I jammed my actual tablet (a 7" 2013 Nexus 7) in my pocket, and while it was a little bit snug, it fit in there and didn't limit my range of motion or feel like I might damage it, so I feel like a phablet which is a little smaller should fit just fine...

That being said I don't have a case on the Nexus 7. I could see how if you have one of those big, bulky OtterBox styled protective cases it might be more of a problem. I tend to avoid those in favor of thin cases of my phones though.

To me the thumb reach distance I illustrated above continues to be the only problem with phablets (apart from them looking a little ridiculous and large). If I had crazy 8" long thumbs I might actually get a phablet :p

"Good news, everyone! I've invented the fing-longer, for all your fingering needs. Oh my!" - What we all wish Professor Farnsworth would walk in and tell us. A man can dream though... a man can dream.

32 waist, wear slacks every weekday. Moto G4 Plus fits in my front pockets just fine. Sounds like some "get off my lawn" syndrome to me, but eh.

I'd like a 7 inch phone. like the Nexus 7 tablet. I am not kidding. We use headsets anyway and having one device with me at all times is a dream that I want to achieve. One device for all day work, same device in bed watching shows, same device while commuting. I am too blind for my LG V20.
