WD Easystore External Discussion

I've skipped this many times (even bought one from Amazon without the red drive), but this time it's available in store....so got a gift card at kroger for 2 of them (cuz 2x points means I'm almost at $1/gallon discount on gas....so that's almost like no tax on the order. Thanks whoever said this deal was back on.

I just bought one from Best Buy tonight.

It has a WD RED NAS Hard Drive inside as expected.

Dated April 21, 2017.

Made in China.

I destroyed the crap out of my clips so there's no going back for warranty. Don't use a butter knife, or if you do, do it more gracefully than I did. Frankly I have no ideas how you could get this off without breaking them. I busted 2 of 4 and the remaining two look mangled.

My wallet hates whomever said the deal was back on. In for four from BB. Doing the 6% back in rewards which negates the tax when I buy something else.

I may have to stop buy BB again on the way home from work tomorrow night... Ugh. Decided to start setting up an unRAID system since my Synology DS414J doesn't want to take more than 2x8TB + 2x4TB without splitting volumes.

There's the PDF linked with instructions... shoulda took a look. https://hardforum.com/threads/180-8...-wd-red-inside.1930595/page-3#post-1042985422

Maybe OP should put it in the 1st post to make it easier to find?

It took me a little patience with the first one, then once you figure it out it's simple.

You can use a credit card cut into two (or two different credit cards) and something else after to use to wedge it out. It didn't even really damage the cards at all either but I had some around that I didn't care about ruining. I then packaged everything back up in the retail box, without fully assembling, to make it easy to pop in later if needed for warranty.

I haven't tried to mess with these yet, but the other model that Amazon had worked with a few gift cards, credit cards...or in my case a bunch of players cards from half a dozen casinos that I've visited over the years.

As an aside, one thing I noticed that's different about these vs what's form Amazon is 2 year warranty for these vs 3 for the Amazon one. Really doesn't matter, since a drive that lasts 2 years will likely last 5, but for some reason I thought these had a 3 year warranty too.

Credit card or paperclips, the larger ones (what I used), there are 4 locations for the clips on the back side, stick the clip or card and move it along till you see the clip, then push it all the way in and leave the card/paperclip in place, repeat for the other 3 clips, housing slides right off after that.

My understanding is that with this drive WD doesn't give a fuck. If it dies you send the bad drive.

I hope that's right - I read somewhere they had different serial number designations for the external enclosures -- vs. drives sold retail for internal drives.

that would make sense, since the warranty on red drives is, I think, 3 years and these have a 2 year warranty.

I entered my drives s/n and it says it's got a 2 year warranty...it also knows that it's an easy store drive, so I suspect you'd have to ship it back in the enclosure.

Thanks for reposting this.

For those that may struggle with this, you shove the CC in the spots specified, then flex them until it pops up. you don't need to cut them into guitar pick sized/shaped pieces. I used full CC/Gift Cards and it worked like a charm.

Have another one sitting at BB, just need to find the time to run down and pick it up.

I used 2 CC on edge and then something to pry as described in the PDF. Came out no problem with no damage, just take your time.

Is the Geek Squad protection plan worth anything? I've heard the WD warranty process is less than stellar (no personal experience with it [lucky in that regard]).

There is something to be said for walking into a brick and mortar with your broken drive and walking out with a new one (per $20 Geek Squad warranty).

These from my understanding are more or less relabeled HGST He drives, and all HGST HDD manufacturing is done in China.

All of my 6TB and 8TB HGST NAS ( 7200 RPM ) bought very recently ( 10/2016, 01/2017, 02/2017 on boxes/drive labels ) are all made in Thailand. Maybe these 5400 RPM drives are made in China.

More likely they won't have the same product (8TB easystore w/RED inside) and you might have to accept whatever they do have which may or may not be better. It appears this "easystore" is a Best Buy exclusive which is also probably a limited availability type product.

Fair point. I could see it being an advantage if the drive dies fairly soon and their availability is more likely. Of course, if it died immediately, I'd just take it back for a regular 30-day exchange anyway.

EDIT: I bit. Going to pick up 2 drives in store in about an hour. Thanks, OP!

I haven't done it in at least 5 years, but every WD drive I returned was painless. you call them, they get a CC. They ship you the new drive and you ship the old one back after you've copied your data off of it. As for getting a different drive, from what I understand, there's pretty much no difference between the various 8TB drives, but maybe it's not possible to turn on the NAS features (assuming they're turned off) on the other drives.

Yes, this is the key. I followed Hanime's instructions about where to insert the cards and to press hard but the clips were not releasing. So I flexed one of the cards outward while pressing inwards hard until I felt it slip past the bump and bottom out. Did that for the other three clips and then followed the rest of his instructions. It was still a bitch to get open but I managed to get both drives out of their shells with no damage. For a snap-together enclosure, that thing is really well made!

Now I just need to get the drives installed and start copying files over.

I used an old Lowes credit card, cut to pieces and just followed the instructions exactly as shown in the PDF in this thread. Easy-peasy to shuck the drives following those instructions. Make sure you push the shims you make in until they bottom out on the clips and make sure you place them just as shown in the pictures!

Shucked two more tonight. Piece of cake. Now time to give my wallet a rest....

Okay I'm kind of seriously regretting getting in on this. First time around my credit card detected it as fraud and then when I cleared it Best Buy cancelled it anyway and the deal was just off. The charge is by the way still pending on my credit card so who the hell knows when BB will randomly finally decide to clear the thing. Next time when doing the shipping options today I noticed they had it at a location close to me. Okay so I choose that and it says that it should be available today or tomorrow. Get order confirmation and then check the status, it says NEXT SATURDAY. What the hell? Try to make changes and change it from pickup to shipping... nope, can't do that.

I want to contact them via some sort of web form or email but it's kind of funny, their web site's contact us section doesn't actually have any way of contacting them. I guess I'll have to try calling them. I can already imagine the pain. What a mess.

It'll likely go away on it's own. Holds typically last a few days to a week.

However, the deal is still on http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easy...-3-0-hard-drive-black/5792401.p?skuId=5792401

I know that, I'm just pissed about how they said I could pick it up in store TODAY and then randomly flipped that over to NEXT SATURDAY with no warning, and then the icing on the cake is that I now can't cancel or change the order in any way. I tried changing it to ship to me, but nope. Get to confirmation but the system won't allow it. Hmmm... I wonder why I usually buy from almost anywhere else, huh...

Well I guess I'll give an opinion on the actual product sometime later... like... y'know... NEXT FREAKING SATURDAY. *grumble grumble*

Just picked one up...listed as "free two day shipping" until I put in my address..now it's about 10 days out. Good thing I'm not in a hurry.

Call them, stop being a bitch.

I did. What happened was almost exactly what I expected. They have no more online stock. The store was trying to get it from other stores in the area that had it. All the representative did was change it so that I was picking up from a location that was 30 minutes away (as opposed to 10...). At least hopefully the order will be actually be ready today. I hate driving.

I had the same thing. It was much faster to have it shipped to store and pick up in person.

I tried, but the nearest store to me that has them in stock is >1 hour drive...I think I'll just wait.

So that's why you stole your own car...you took it away from yourself so you wouldn't have to drive :p

What are you talking about? This person dude keeps taking it. I can't see the individual but I know they're not even happy to do it. =p

Anyway I got both of them yesterday. Did some large copies over the USB interface without issue. Great drives, but I'm kind of uncomfortable with their seek noises. They're weird. They don't sound like other drives I've heard. I thought at first that they were dying on arrival... but since I ran one all night copying I guess it's just normal.

So one thing I feel like I have to mention is that the shucking guide on the front page is awful. I broke one side of tabs (the ones on the black shroud) while attempting to follow it in a literal manner on one of the drives. That's a stupid idea. Here's deal. You pull up on the areas with the tabs just a bit, but not like you're actually trying to pry them up... ie create a space there. You're just loosening them slightly (and I do mean SLIGHTLY). Then you pull the black cover in one direction while pulling the middle section in the other. If you loosened up whichever set of tabs you're working on enough, it should slide just slightly forward without TOO much trouble. Then you stop and work the other two tabs on the other side. Since there's some tension between the side that's been pulled out slightly and the side that hasn't, the other one will just almost naturally start going forward when you have the tabs loose enough. Using this, I literally got the second drive I was attempting on shucked in the span of one minute, with 0 damage or roughness. Overall not too bad. If I need to send them in for warranty, I'll just super glue these two tabs that I did break off. They're still in tact so it'll look a little weird at the glue spot but I doubt it'll be that big a deal with some touchups. The other HDD, where I realized the guide sucks and just did it my way, looks perfect. Granted it's extremely unlikely that both of them will end up failing, so chances are I'll only even need to send one of them in ever, and I'll just use the one that I didn't mess up.

The best TL;DR is that you should really try to pull the black cover forward at every point, never outward. Outward is asking for those tabs to break.

And yes they're both reds.

For reference back in post #93 there is a much better guide than on the first page. I know too little too late for some, but figured I would post up for anyone attempting.

Added to the OP for new users and quick reference.

Some people are getting 8tb reds with double the cache to 256mb. Wonder why the change.

Specifically these shucked drives show up with model #WD80EFAX vs standard WD80EFZX
Just noticed that the drive I picked up earlier in the week is a WD80EFAX where the others were WD80EFZX.
