Should I sell my Radeon RX 480?

I bought Radeon RX 480 a few months ago ($140).

Performance wise, I have no complain, but now that prices of the Radeon RX 480 has skyrocketed, should I sell it and get something better? possibly a Geforce GTX 1070?

One of my concern is that mining boom would later turn into mining bust and used Radeon RX 480 would flood the market.

This will eventually happen but not for a while. Milk it for all it's worth while it's a hot item
Agreed. I say sell it while it's worth something and get a card that's better for your use case (which I assume is playing games).

tough! if the filthy miners get stuck with em who cares!? those bastards keep eating up all the new cards on release so let em sit on old shit. do not buy used mining cards! if I had another gpu to use id consider selling my 280x.

No, what I am saying is that if I wait to sell the card, the mining boom might be over and used cards would flood the market, so I wouldn't be able to sell it for much.

Sell now. Don't delay. No reason to. A new card will show up soon enough and they will begin purchasing those at premium price instead. It's happened all before! Sell while the selling is good

I agree with everyone in here. Sell and buy another card. Even if to offset the cost of a Nvidia card.

Eventually the market will be flooded with 480's as the difficulty rises and is no longer profitable. Personally, it's better to buy and sell crypto instead of mining on the exchange.

Want a chuckle? This thread made me look for and I found three old tahiti LE cards in the basement today, they were lousy at mining litecoin (asics weren't out for it then), never really used them more than a few hours. I just finished popping them in a rig mining ETH and together they would generate about 240 USD a month at todays coin prices. Scary part is, those three cards can load a 1000 w PSU if you clock them just to 1100Mhz at stock volts. They draw just as much as a 7950. I wonder if I should sell them as a mining combo, custom undervolted so they fit on a 750W PSU with room to spare for the mobo.

I sold my 580 and made $90, bought a 1070 which mines at the same hashrate and uses less power.

Yeah, just hurry and sell it before the bust. Personally, Im trying to sell my 390X, testing it at $350 atm. Not gonna buy a 1070 through, stupid me is gonna wait for Vega. (or volta at this rate)

I have a 480 in a 2nd gaming machine and if it weren't for the fact that it's mated to a 144Hz FreeSync display, i'd have sold it already.

I sold my 480 months ago and got a 1070 and didn't look back. Dam 480 was a heater.

If I hadn't had an appendectomy 2 days ago, I would look into selling my RX 480. Being in the middle of post-op, though... the RX480 is the main thing helping me throughout recovery. I'm pretty much playing Metal Gear Solid Phantom Pain all day :)

Sell it? Start mining with it!

I'm bringing this back...

Every time I think about getting into mining, I look through a getting started guide, promptly close that tab and play a game instead.

My Radeon RX 480 is sold and shipped.

My new Geforce GTX 1070 is on its way.

:vamp: I've sold over 70 shit cards that I've mined on for YEARS into this boom. I mean I wouldn't buy them and I disclosed everything (what the cards were doing but why the fans were brand new because they were never used) and they still went like hotcakes, my wife is swearing at me (literally) because I had her packaging cards up. It's hilarious. Everything I owned that wouldn't pull down to 160 watts is gone like the wind.

Enjoy the 1070 man.

shops here say they will have new RX 4xx cards in 2 weeks, why are miners still ready to pay 300 for a RX 470?

sorry, meant RX 5xx. But 100 per card in a few weeks? I also live in Europe, electricity is like 0.3$ here, but I guess many will go to eastern europe.

After seeing this thread I checked ebay and Sapphire Nitro RX 480s are going for well over $350...this is tempting me to sell mine and get a 1070 or maybe even move up to a 1080. I'm seriously thinking about it...

Damn...that's a good upgrade, but you coulda got a 980 ti in trade for that 480.....

Barely beats it (and only in some games) and a 980ti is 275, a 1070 is 375, not worth $100

Sure but why? 1070 beats 980ti lol....

If you can get a good overclock on the 980Ti (like > 1.5 GHz) it pulls ahead of the 1070. There's also more CUDA cores on the 980Ti. The 1070 'wins' at stock speed and uses less power.

Oh yes, the overclocking argument. Overclock the 1070 and now you have a 1080 essentially. In the end, overclocking meant more performance for less money. 980ti is not really much cheaper than a 1070.

I was at a computer shop in Canada today and I was trying to special order a couple of 570's.... He told me to not even bother. Thats with a down payment...

I wonder if there's even going to be more stock at all in NA??

Have you ever bought a skid of video cards? They're on allocation from vendors to retailers. Bigger places in Canada like NCIX (netlink) get more and I assure you everything they have coming in is already sold by the skid, so no, I don't expect anymore to hit retail anytime soon. 10-12 weeks at least. I also don't think the average gaming enthusiast will even get a sniff of a Vega when those finally launch either.

Places like Staples, Canada Computers and Bestbuy are all second tier, places like Mike's hardware use JIT inventory from a wholesaler and don't actually carry their own stock. I almost forgot Tiger, because well, they're forgettable.

We , my Canuck brother, are seriously hosed.

I'm tempted to sell my R9 390... could bump up to a 1070 minus the lame eBay and Paypal fees.

Why would he do that? I have a 980Ti and while a good overclocking 980Ti may be ever so slightly faster than a good overclocking 1070, it's got plenty of other disadvantages that make a 1070 a smarter buy. Next gen API's like Vulkan and DX12 work notably better on Pascal, it also has an additional 2GB of ram. It uses considerably less power as well. Literally the only advantage of a 980Ti is in DX11 and even then, only if you get one that's a good overclocker, even then, you're looking at an FPS advantage in the single digit range.

On top of all that, 1070 is the better miner if you still wanted to dabble in that.

Holy cash cow. Looked at prices of completed items on FeeBay.

Why are RX 480 fetching so much right now?

Miners of online currency, Also I hear its something to do with China accepting some form of it recently. Apparently the RX 400-500 cards are really good at doing the calculations to mine online currency.

agree with you on vega

disagree on everything else.

NO ONE HAS INVENTORY

NO ONE

there are NO skids to be had. NO ONE IS BUYING THEM UNLESS BEHIND THE SCENES.

there will be cards trickling out soon, i suspect within 30 days....

then vega will come out within another 30 and it will be a hell of a lot smoother flow than what has gone on in this past month.

supply / demand

source: 17 years retail warehouse manager

believe me if there is a demand for the product and there are NO retailers selling it, its a SUPPLY problem

EDIT: yes we are hosed. why, are you currently mining? i thought you gave up?

There are indeed shipments coming in. You can disagree, and I'm fine with that. As to the rest, I'm not saying but I still do mine.
