Hopefully we can expect some sort of variant of this WiGig (Wireless Gigabit) HTC Vive headset in the first half of 2018. I have spent countless hours with the Vive headset on, and I can assure you, that while the wired headset in manageable, if I could go wireless, I certainly would. The huge box on the head looks a bit ridiculous at the moment, but keep in mind this is a prototype which you can almost be assured that will be slimmed way down for consumer sales.

I think the aim of wireless needs to be an all-in-one solution so that you can be unthethered from any external devices. It's not the wire that bothered me, it was being confined to my small living room that did. I want to take a VR headset out to an open field so I actually have room to do stuff without walking into the boundaries after 3 or 4 steps. I wouldnt even object to some sort of portable lighthouse setup that can be placed in an open area since having an AIO that can also detect forward movement by itself is asking a bit too much (although Oculus is working on this using 3d cameras or something).

I agree but even within a confined space going wireless makes a lot of things easier, like running and 360 degree movement.

I know I'm going to sound like a crazy tin foil hat type here.... but;

I'm not going to have to wear a tin foil hat to avoid brain cancer am I ?

I always assumed people would just put a big elastic band around their chest to act as a wire harness. lol ;) joking

Seriously if they perfect this it would help remove one more barrier to mass market appeal.
 
Isn't it a bit late for Intel to be annoucing this, when the TPCast wireless adaptor is going on sale sometime in the next 3 months?

The 3rd party Windows Holographic VR headsets already do this, using some variation of kinect technology
