Can't decide.

I don't do photoshop but sometimes VMs but mostly just one.

I can do a couple of VMS with 8 GB.

You need to provide more info.

If you can afford 64GB and the motherboard supports it then go with that. You will still suffer buyer's remorse, but it won't be the result of not having purchased 64GB of RAM. :D

Maybe linux VMs sure.

I game, use a browser, and download new games all at the same time sometimes.
Try windows 7, 8 and 10, besides linux, each using 2 GB.

Granted, they are running from a SSD and only two at the time, but they are doable.

Game, browser and downloads at the same time is not only constrained by ram, but by storage speed and CPU, so depending of that you have now, memory is only one of the pieces for the puzzle.

This is true.

Storage speed is Samsung 850 Pro 512 GB SSD and CPU i7 7700k

If you have less than 8 GB, then upgrade to 8. And depending on your reasons to have a VM running at the same time as a game, you might either want to shut the VM down and bite the bullet and get a Ryzen R7, since for what I keep reading over and over, the multiple cores really help in situations like this, but on games your i7 is faster than the Ryzen.

I never said I had a VM running at the same time while I game.

32GB will be overkill 99.9% of the time unless you're running some massive VMs or do video editing, 3D rendering and so on. But you didn't mention any of that. So get the cheaper option unless you really really want the bragging rights.

You know you can add more ram later right?

I think the main reason is if you purchase 4 x 8GB dimms on a platform that supports only 4 dimms its more difficult to upgrade since you can't use more than 4 slots.

With the stupid price of RAM right now, I would buy the least amount you can comfortably get away with.

16gb and send me the difference you would have paid from the 64gb. ;)

Nico_0, he said 7700k which only supports dual channel memory. He'd have to do x99 or wait for the new hedt chipset to do quad channel. He should just get 2x 16GB dimms, then if he needs more later he can populate the other 2 slots.

I was literally just going to ask this question. I currently have 32 GB on my Z77 system. I top 16 GB frequently so having 32 GB works great currently. I'm thinking about buying 64 GB fro my X299 system, but not sure how long if ever it would take me to surpass 32 GB.
