I'm looking for a better eth wallet. any suggestions? currently using Kryptokit's beta. but i'd like something more stable.

Ya im looking for one too....Kryptokit's was the easiest I found to quickly setup and start mining.

So I was poking around my computer and ran into my old bitcoin wallet that I forgot about, from when I tried mining in 2011. Loading it up and had 0.6 bitcoins in it. Pretty surprised to see that, #1.. how much a bitcoin is worth, and #2 that newegg takes them.

Anyways, the point of this is - Would it be worth it to start mining Ethereum and then just sitting on the ETH for a couple years? Does it have a chance to take off like bitcoins apparently did?

Id say its worth mining Ethereum. Mainly cause of the low investment cost. (If you play it smart).
I shopped ebay/amazon till I found a deal on some graphic cards and started mining with them. I already had the computer to run them so I had no investment except for the cost of the cards. I mined for a few months and now I can resell the cards for very little loss and have a bunch of Etheruem coins to hold on to. GPU mining is the big advantage of Etheruem mining because you dont have to buy specialized equipment that takes a year to pay off and loses its value by the minute.

ethereum has been so stable compared to bitcoin. When i mined bitcoin it was a roller coaster ride. Personally, i have a no gamble policy with coins, especially ALT coins. I have seen so many come and go, ethereum is interesting for sure, but id rather take the coins i mine and turn them into more video cards (assets) mine faster, rinse repeat, etc. im up to 13 video cards now. planning on 16-20 by winter.

anyone worried about the looming PoS? once ethereum mining is done, all other profitable coins should (arguable) be mined into unprofitable territory soon thereafter. I'm weary of adding more cards at this point, but I do have 4 more PCI-E slots available :D

I think after they go to PoS the price will take a dump. I think users love the mining aspect of coins and once you take that away they lose interest.

we shall see. A counterpoint to that is the bitcoin halving actually increased the price, and mining for most normal users has been long unprofitable.

Sorry to bump an old thread but at this time in 2017, would you guys say that ETH is a viable option as a currency? It's been pretty steady the last few months.

ETC and ETH are huge as far as i know... not as much as bitcoin itself though.
I heard Pascal coin is good to start with as well as AEON.
You can mine Pascal with the wallet itself ; proxy server normally supplied with the miner ; then the miner called PscalCoinMiner ; you need to tun these 3 three items... i have tried it but my machine is dog slow to even bother, i reckon its my graphics card which is a GTX650. If i had at least a 750 Ti then great.... but mine is useless.

AEON coin you can mine with Minergate.com but i dont know how great it is... I have mined for ages now like 3 weeks and i have only made 12 AEONS... the problem is burning your hardware and your electricity...
I need guidance also .... very hard on forums or Minergate chat site... u need to actually be shwon by somebody , and they need to consider your hardware..... share your desktop screen .
This is the best way in my opinion.
Very hard to find people like this... like good friends: )

How do you know which pools are the best to mine with? is the correct word "with" or are you mining "against" it.... it is a bit complicated to understand how this mining rigmarole works.
I dont really understand the safety involved and how the pool knows that you are mining because some mining pools dont even require a username and password which i really dont understand.

If you have hardware form the stone age like me then is it wiser to mine solo or to mine in a pool.

I do have accounts or workers with Nicehash ; litecoinpool.org ; a few more i have probably forgotten about.
There is one called Miningpoolhub also.

Also do u go for pool which are charging 0-1-2 percent fees? or doesnt it make of a difference?

I have tired GUIS like Easyminer but it is using obsolete underlying mining tools and also Minergate is a good start but i am hearing rumors of them not being stable with hash speeds and also that they can possibly be using your hashing power , somehow?

I am really seeking which is a good mining pool to start with and would solo mining be an option?

I have tried ETC and ETH using Minergate i get pretty decent speeds with my intel i7 2600K BUT the GUI only allows mining with CPU , not sure if this is a shortfall of the GUI ...mahybe i should throw it out and start fresh with another pool and use command line utilities.

I currently only have a GTX650 card which is really weak and 2 platforms, namely AMD X4 860k and the Intel I7 2600K .... also a GTS450 card which is actually alot more better performing than the GTX650.... i want to over clock these GFX cards but i reckon its a waste of time... it might be better than i buy a proper AMD graphics card instead such as the RX470/RX480.....i would guess with 4GB would be ample.
Unless i just get the RX480 with 8GB ram.... might be a bit overkill.

So, anybody else here lucky enough to buy ETH below $50?

The bulls have been strong for the past few months.

I did not buy any, but I did start mining 2 months ago. So I guess, good timing.

Mind you, as I learned from stocks, it is all worth $0.00 until you sell it.

The reason I started mining was so that I could start playing with Ethereum as a blockchain. But now I am having "fun" mining.

I have found ethereum to be the hardest coin to understand, but i got all my machines working on it with the following batch file using QTminer. Download a miner (QT or ethereum) I had a hard time getting the wallet to sync, it took days so in the meantime i generated an online wallet to mine with. Then find an exchange. Mine Ethereum -- hold them until PoS or sell for bitcoin. Personally i do not like gambling, so i am going to sell them for bitcoin as i mine them. Once I have .25 bitcoin or more ill sell for USD. I just want my video cards to pay for themselves so i could justify a free upgrade.

setx GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR 0
setx GPU_MAX_HEAP_SIZE 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_SINGLE_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
qtminer.exe -G -s us1.ethermine.org:4444 -u YourWalletAddressHere.ComputerNameHere --cl-local-work 256 --cl-global-work 16384

Hi Where do you get Qtminer from and is it dandy ?

I don't remember... it has been a long time since i mined eth. I switched to Zcash awhile ago and been really happy. Just google bitcointalk claymore zcash (or ethereum) ive been using claymore miners the past year. runs solid, i reboot my rigs once every 2-3 weeks - they are so reliable i dont even check if they are running anymore

Yeh would be cool for you to give me some guidance. If you can drop me a message which pool and which tools to use , would be great.
I just got my hands on an RX470, only one unfortunately.

I really have not shopped around for pools. When i get on a pool and its reliable, my payouts are steady i stop looking. No means am i saying these are the best. I used ethermine for ethereum, flypool for zcash.
for Zcash i like http://zcash.flypool.org

So places like nicehash , are they bad ?I mean if i understand you better, does it mean that some pool pay slow? or little or what ?
I didnt know there would be a difference

https://ethermine.org/
Ethermine is a good pool.
Nicehash isnt like all the other pools. Its not bad, its just different. It depends what you want to do.
Here's a description:
"NiceHash is a special multi-mining pool as it allows users to mine any hashing algorithm and to sell the hashing algorithm in the Nicehash hashpower exchange to users that want to buy a profitable mining contract. Nicehash charges a 3% fee and miners are paid in Bitcoin"

I started off with Nicehash on Windows. I then dove in further and got sick of Windows drivers issues (when running 6-7 RX 470/480s) and decided to start using ethOS.

I'm actually still using the Nicehash ethereum pool with ethOS, which is kinda silly since I'm giving them a 3% fee instead of the more normal 1% fee on other pools. I like the auto-conversion to BTC though (that'd eat a bit of profit elsewhere anyways), and I still run the Nicehash Windows app on my main system for my GTX 1080 Ti. That thing switches algos several times a day to whatever is most profitable. Its nice to have it all going to the same wallet. Maybe one of these days I'll leave the newbie pool and step up to another for the ethOS rigs. We'll see..

Honestly, with only one or two cards, I'd say just use Nicehash for the convenience. I'm only considering switching because the 3% fee starts to look pretty hefty when you have 20+ cards running..

I guess my hardware is too old for Nicehash, it does not show any devices, not even CPU!

i7 860 and AMD 6970 , i thought at least it should see the CPU but guess not? Oh well, I just wanted to get enough BTC to have enough for the transfer fee to get my SJCX to an exchange lol.

Oh I looked through the changelog and one of the older Nicehash miner versions had a note about CPU mining where it stated that CPUs without AES-NI were not supported so that explains that. Oh well nevermind hehe.

getting about 1.85 on my RX470 fior this algorithm using the Claymore miner 12.4
the rate per day seems to vary from 169 to 192 its weird Or maybe related to the price of the coin OR is it the BTC value?

Is it difficult to install and setup ? what pool do you use though?
Is performance better using linux ethos ?

Honestly, with all of the trouble you're having, just use Nicehash with the default settings (change your wallet to your wallet!!) and be done with it for now. Mod the BIOSes to use the 1500 memory straps, set your clocks at 1050/1900 using WattMan or MSI Afterburner and be done. You'll end up hashing 26-27Mh/s per card, making over $4/day between the two cards.

Is this fine? I am unsure about bios flashing especially on an expensive card.
Very scared i brick it - Though i am sure it can be un-bricked so long as i have a space card which i do, and i backed up the original bios.

Yeah those are normal stock RX 470 speeds. Try underclocking the cores to 1050 and drop core voltage down to somewhere around 850-900mV and they will run cooler. Don't OC the memory though unless you mod the BIOSes.

Please can you show me on desktop? or point me to the "correct" software to use.
Oh and how do you keep the changes? do you need to do this everytime you start windows?
My powercolor box doesnt seem to have come with handy software?

RX470 Saphire Nirtro+ 8GB and POWERCOLOR RX470 4GB red Devil is what i have
The Saphire however i am told has got some handy software on the CD, does it maybe have Overclocking software?

I think i tried undervoltin last time in Afterburner but it was grayed out, i dont know why .
So i left it and thought this was a myth. Can you help? or this because i stay in the wrong country or have the wrong graphics cards?

MSI Afterburner works well. You may have to go into the advanced settings to enable voltage control. My Windows box now only has an nVidia card in it, so I'm not exactly sure which setting enabled voltage control for the AMD cards. Those settings can be set to be applied at Windows startup, so its somewhat a set and forget thing.

I have 5x PowerColor RX470 4GB Red Devils (by the way, I saw you ask about the pentagram on the back.. the "older" ones have the pentagram, the "V2" ones do not.. as far as I can tell, nothing else is different between them). They all have Hynix memory on them. I'm running them at 1050/1950 with the 1500 memory timings (requires modding the BIOS for the memory changes), and they are all hashing exactly 26.7Mh/s. Some of my other cards with Hynix can only run 1900MHz with 1500 timings, and they hash at 26.2Mh/s..

I don't have an RX 470 Nitro+ 8GB.. all I have is a RX 480 Nitro 4GB, but that has Samsung memory on it and runs at 1050/2000 with 1500 timings, hashing 27.9Mh/s

It's been a while and I'm on older hardware but from what I remember you had to edit a configuration file for MSI Afterburner to enable the voltage controls.

Okay so i will just find where to unlock it in Afterburner.... and u reckon Afterburner is fine to use?

I dont quite get this though - > 1050/1950 with the 1500

.... i would imagine i can only move the slider to one setting/value for CORE CLOCK and MEM right?
We can speak greek later, but for now, please laymans :)

You can set the CORE CLOCK down to 1050-1150 and undervolt to save some power and heat. It won't really affect eth mining performance much until you drop below 1050. It drops off pretty quickly below that.

As far as the MEM CLOCK goes, don't touch it on the PowerColor card unless you mod the BIOS. Increasing it will likely reduce performance without a modded BIOS. That card should be somewhere around 21-22Mh/s currently. Modding the BIOS to use the memory timings from the "1500 strap" would bump you to around 24-25Mh/s, and then increasing the clock speed to 1900-1950 would put you at where I mentioned above.

The Sapphire is a little different since it is already at 2000MHz on the 8GB model. I've heard of people bumping those to 2100-2150 or even higher without issue, and that would increase performance maybe into the 25 range. Just increase memory clock until it no longer mines reliably, and then dial it back 25-50MHz. Modding the BIOS would dramatically increase performance (you'd likely be able to get near 29-30Mh/s).

Late to the party, like usual, but I just started mining with my single GPU gaming rig on ethermine.org pool. I have a GTX 980ti and am getting 21.5 MH/s using Claymore miner.

I'm confused about wallets, accounts, exchanges, how to see and access my ETH when I get it. I downloaded Mist, ethereum wallet, and made a wallet at myetherwallet. Its confusing for a first timer. I just checked my myetherwallet page for my address and see that I have an unpaid balance of 0.00004, but no "shares", despite the miner log showing 13 shares and the green text of shares accepted every once in a while.

Questions. Buttons appears to know whats up with all this, perhaps he can reply or message me (fingers crossed?). Any place you can point me to online to explain all this? I can't find any obvious info. Either people write/talk way over my head, or they give a step-by-step without explaining whats actually happening ( which is how I got started and working with the myetherwallet site).

I'm using Coinbase as my wallet. Opinions vary wildly on wallets (Coinbase especially!). Coinbase tells you not to use them as your mining wallet, but I've had no issues yet. I pay attention to my payouts and make sure they are coming through. So far, so good. They charge you a 1.5% fee to deposit to your bank account or 3.99% to deposit to Paypal. The 3.99% is high, but I think 1.5% is reasonable for converting to cash in my bank account.

I recently switched from Nicehash to the ethermine.org pool. I use Claymore 9.3 and have my account set up to deposit to my Coinbase account. Making a pretty good chunk of change right now!

My RX 470s/480s are getting 26-28Mh/s. My GTX 1080Ti is getting 36-37Mh/s.

With the crazy stuff that's happening with the value of ether right now, I am NOT selling any more than I need to pay the electric bill and the minimum payment on the 0% credit card most of the hardware is financed on. I was going to sell it immediately and pay the card down fast, but at this point, with the wildly increasing value, I'm better off holding onto the ether as long as I can.

Coinbase wants as much info as my last bank account. Kind of wierded me out. Are they only asking for all that because I live in NY state or do they ask for that on every user?

As far as I know they require more info for New York residents. I could start trading with certain limits by only providing my basic info. I Had to upload an ID if I wanted to remove some limitations.

I have one RX480, is it worth it to mine? Might get another if it's worth it for now. Looking to hold onto ETH for a while.

Yes, especially if you already own the hardware.

The card prices have absolutely sky-rocketed the last couple weeks though, so good luck finding another card at a decent price unless someone sells one without knowing the value.

Mined Bitcoin for a couple years at the end of the GPU mining era and then tried an ASIC miner. Did pretty well until I got caught in the bankruptcy of that Tokyo exchange. Lost about 18 Bitcoin. Thinking about getting back into mining ETH since it is limited to GPU, more as a hobby than a business. Cannot find one damn rx470 or rx480 for sale at msrp in the US! Apparently big mining enterprizes have bought them all up!

TIP: even if mining seems to be a break even effort based on current price just keep at it and HOLD the coin you manage to get for at least two years. You'll be very happy you did! That's my experience anyway.
