1. How does PfSense number the network interfaces? MB in question is a Supermicro X9SCI-LN4F and PfSense does not number them the same as is indicated in the SM manual. So does PfSense follow some rule of it's own?

2. Why the Heck does it ask me to specify the LAN inteface after I've specified the WAN interface? Why doesn't it just assign the remaining interfaces to the LAN?

TIA

1.) The default configuration file on pfSense 2.3 has em0 assigned as WAN, and em1 assigned as LAN. If the target hardware has em0 and em1, then the assignment prompt is skipped and the install will proceed as usual.

2.) Because that would be silly to do. It gives you the option to create a LAN interface when you first stand it up, and the rest of the interfaces are left up to you to create for your needs: DMZ, WAN2, Guest Network, etc.

if you read the prompts theres a whole cable detection portion during the interface assignments... just unplug the cable on the interface you wanted to be WAN, it'll detect cable unplug to help you determine the assignments

Also - you are probably just used to traditional home routers which are generally 1 physical Layer 3 interface (WAN) and then 4 switch ports with a VLAN1 (virtual) interface which is a backplane the 4 "LAN" switchports share.
