PlayStation 4 Pro Not Powerful Enough to Run Destiny 2 at 60 FPS

This is an interesting turnout for a console that can supposedly compete with PCs, right? Bungie has revealed that the PS4 Pro is simply too weak to run their sequel at 60 FPS due to the lack of CPU power. While they have managed to get the game running in 4K, it is still sad to see the lack of performance in an upgraded console. The author suggests that this limitation will apply to the Scorpio version even if it has the hardware to manage 60 FPS due to the sake of console parity, but I would be surprised if the Xbox team let that happen.

…Project Scorpio utilizes a highly modified CPU so the device may be able to run Destiny 2 at 60 FPS, but due to Sony’s platform’s limitations, we’ll never know. It seems like a decision was made early on to keep the console versions at 30 FPS due to the PlayStation 4 Pro. This is truly disappointing and will be upsetting to many console gamers. Here’s hoping Phil Spencer intervenes and offers Bungie support to make Destiny 2 on Project Scorpio the best version of the game. This is a unique opportunity for Microsoft to not only land a significant blow to the competition, but also promote Project Scorpio as the ultimate gaming console by offering either frame rate or visual enhancements which go beyond the PlayStation 4 Pro’s bump in resolution.

I wouldn't be surprised. Look at how cozy Bungie and Sony were with the PS4 version over Xbone; exclusive missions/items, timed exclusives, etc. I could totally see, even if Scorpio had the power to run it at 4k/60fps, Bungie neutering it on behalf of 'console parity'.

Microsoft already has the ultimate gaming platform for 4k, and Destiny 2 is coming for it: Windows 10 on PC. It would be nice to see Microsoft stick it to Sony on a title that Sony pride themselves of.
Technically, the ultimate gaming platform wouldn't have spyware or unnecessary bloat consuming resources.

Therefore the ultimate gaming platform for Destiny 2 will be Windows 7, or 8.1 with a start menu replacement.

Bungie/Activision certainly weren't going to limit their market by making it DX12 only and Windows 10 exclusive.

Beat me to it. Agree completely.

LOL! Like they don't do it on consoles.... Get informed before calling analytics Spyware.

Over 400 Windows 10 installs, still looking on the network for all this spyware traffic everybody seems to be complaining about, I don't see any more data being uploaded to Microsoft than I do from the windows 7 machines. That aside even if they can't do a full 60 fps at 4K if they could get it so it never dropped below 30FPS at 4K it would still be a solid step in the right direction.

My vision of the ultimate gaming platform has the power and resources enough so it's doesn't care if there is bloatware or waste.

But I have that now so .....

You tolerate things I never would. Fot me it's a matter of principles. In some ways I envy the way you can shrug off Microsoft's BS. I think we can both agree that consoles provide a subpar experience to a gaming PC when it comes to image quality and framerate even if we disagree on OS choice.

However, the operating systems you listed are no longer products offered by Microsoft. Although they may be many people's preferred solution, they are not current from a marketing standpoint. Also, as the system requirements have not been released, we don't know if it will run on previous versions of Windows, though it likely will.

look, I was like 25 years old, married, two young kids, when I bought my first "real computer". It was an Amiga 1000 and cost about $1800 bucks and in 1985 that was a chunk of change for us. It didn't even have a hard drive but from a hardware and potential aspect, nothing was even close. I went almost 10 years, bought an Amiga 2000, and a 3000, and what I finally had to give up and accept was that it would never be equal to a PC because you couldn't get equal software for it. I would see games I was dying to play that were for the PC, but never for the Amiga, word processors, You could get MS Word for the PC but had to settle for old cut-rate shit like WordPerfect which wasn't really horrible but it wasn't MS Word.

So after years of second rate software at serious costs, I learned my lesson. Stay with the big dog or suffer for it. that big dog hasn't changed, it's still the PC running windows. Until that changes, I'm not changing. If I have to put up with some MS bullshit to stay with the pack so be it. I know what it's like to be outside of the mainstream. So that's where I am on it and why.

Actually Windows 8.1 is still supported.

But you brought up Windows 10, so help me understand what significance you think it holds for this game.

You can be damn sure Destiny 2 will be DX11, meaning it'll run on 7 and 8.1. Activision is interested in selling games - lots of them - not pushing artificial lockin to a controversial version of an operating system.

If they can't scale back texture or geometry quality to get to 60fps, could they scale back the AI or physics?

8.1 is still supported, but it's been pulled from retail. Windows 10 is the only current consumer OS from Microsoft.

Between them not having dedicated servers, delaying the PC launch, having PS4 exclusive content for at least a fucking year!, as well as the changes to pvp and coop, my excitement for this game has totally evaporated. Every time they release more information, it just gets worse. I didn't play the first Destiny and they apparently don't want anyone to play the sequel, so fuck 'em.

" but I would be surprised if the Xbox team let that happen."

Considering the amount of Sony dong Bungie seems to be gobbling I wouldn't count on that.

What "changes to pvp and coop" are you referring to? Other than changing 6 man sqauds to 4 for pvp, everything I've seen looks like the same format as the original Destiny.

This is not surprising, I've always laughed at the re-use of Jaguar, instead of upgrading to Steamroller or Zen. It's a fucking RX 470 worth of power, being pushed by an Athlon x4.

OF COURSE they're CPU-limited. WTF else were people expecting, when it's just a 40% overclock? And yes, Scorpio has the same issue.

Good thing you can get a more powerful CPU from Intel for just $70. It's ludicrous when they charge for barely double the CPU of the 360.

I don't game at 4k..so..I don't care. Not one of the displays I play video games on is over 55", so 4k is pointless.

Also, that interview made me cringe.

So, 4k at 30 fps? Isn't that... Normal? Especially for a "big name" game like this? Also thought that 4k 60 fps would be great if possible but the goal has always been to get a solid 30 fps with hopefully more eye-candy?

These 400+ systems are running WIn10 Enterprise, I presume? Do the Windows 7 systems have telemetry enabled?

Yea, I am confused. When did 4k60 become the norm?

"My Windows 7 machines have been made to upload data so I don't see a problem with my 400 Win 10 machines doing the same shitty thing."

Nice story, but there's hardly anything Win 10 is needed for to stay current. The story would've made more sense if the Amiga was representing Linux or MacOS.

Console 4k isn't really 4k though. It wasn't that 30 was the end goal, it was what they barely managed.

Indeed. It's like taking a 10 megapixel image, blowing it up to 50MP using the "smart" upscaling in Photoshop, and claiming that the output looks the same as what you get from a real 50 megapixel camera.

On the other hand, the cheapest card that can handle modern titles with consistent and real 4k @60 cost about as much as the whole console, so you do get what you pay for.

you have to think about 4k@60 on consoles like the super compressed streaming 4k content from some providers, it looks better than what you are used to, but it's crap compared to an actual UltraHD movie.

Seems the only retort/defense the console kids have in this thread is "but MS is watching you on your PC"... like they don't do that on their console? Consoles have their place but they are just cheaped out simplified PC's these days.

Logically thought think about it: if you think your $400 PS4pro is going to be able to take on a 1080Ti that costs twice and much (ignoring all the other parts of a PC for now)

If it's fun, play it... but I can say with 100% confidence I've never met a single person that still had a console boner after I sat them down in front of my 27" Gsync 1440p system and let them play a few rounds of BF1. Eye candy, zero lag, zero tearing, I only run a 1070 right now so no 4k, but 1080ti soon :)

No wonder MS focused a lot of CPU overhead and CPU performance with Scorpio.

ARM cores are faster than Jaguar.

"If making it ugly won't work, couldn't they just ruin the game?"

What is this shit? Are you serious?

That's not how it works... Unless you have really terrible eyes. I can /easily/ see a substantial difference going from 1080p to 1440p to 4K on a 40" display. I could tell at 28". You don't need a 55+" display to make 4K "worth it" or noticable.

The vast majority of the world doesn't give a blind rats ass about 4K. Make the damned thing run a beautiful game at 1080p with a butter smooth frame-rate well over 30fps and most people will be absolutely thrilled.

4K looks better for sure, even on smaller displays, but most people don't know and don't care.

As long as something better than your thing exists, somebody on the internet is going to pretend that one is the minimum and yours is garbage. That's the internet.
