Pc will not run for more than 3 seconds with new ram installed

Trying to upgrade the ram in my current pc, but running into trouble. Specs are:
Motherboard: Gigabyte z68a-d3-b3 (F11 BIOS)
CPU: core i5-2500k
Ram: Current 4x2gb adata ddr3 (according to cpuz 665mhz, 9-9-9-24 2T)
Ram: New 2x8gb Kingston HyperX fury 1866 ddr3

Installing the new ram in any configuration will cause the pc to turn on for ~3 seconds and then off. This happens over and over again until I turn the power supply off. This is the second set of the kingston ram that I have tried, bot sets did the exact same thing.

Re-installing old ram, pc turns on and boots up as it should, and all 8GB is accounted for.

What could be the issue here, Obviously I don't have dead ram slots on the motherboard because the old stuff runs just fine. There is no way to test the ram because it won't power on for more than a few seconds. The motherboard specs are 4x1.5v DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32gb system memory. Support for DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules.

I'd like to overclock my processor and squeeze some more life out of my old pc before I dump the cash to upgrade, but it is kind of useless if I can't upgrade my ram too.

Talked with Kingston and Gigabyte, not much help. Only thing kingston told me I could try was to update my bios, which is already at the most current version without going to UEFI. I don't feel as though that will make a difference, and I don't want to chance fucking up flashing the bios. Gigabyte said that I should pull the battery on the motherboard and reset cmos, and if that doesn't work that the ram speed may be incompatible with my processor. Resetting cmos did not help the ram situation, and the settings that got changed in bios left me unable to boot into windows with the new sticks (had to reset my boot order, and set hdd to ahci)

What should my next step be? All I can think is that this kingston ram is "auto overclocking" PNP ram, and possibly it is just not meant to work with my system. Should just buy regular 1866 ddr3 that has an xmp profile?

You'll probably have to try the BIOS update at some point or another. One guess is that the older BIOSes didn't really account for the capability to run more than 8GB on one stick of RAM. Also would like to note that I've heard that some newer GPUs will no longer run with pre UEFI BIOSes...

Also, can you try one stick of RAM at a time first?

BTW: I'm quite sure your new RAM has the 1866 mhz with XMP... so buying a new set will only rule out incompatibilities but probably has little to do with XMP...

Ya, I said above that no configuration of the new ram works (meaning 1 stick, or two, in any channel) My current GPU (1070) that I plan to have until I build a whole new pc runs just fine on my current bios. Also sticks are 8gb each, so I should be fine.

Also this ram does NOT have XMP, at least they don't advertise it as such. It is advertised as PnP ram.
From the description on amazon:
  • Easy to install - Plug-and-Play functionality
  • Automatic Overclocking - reach faster speeds and higher capacities by just installing the memory, no adjustments in BIOS needed
I feel like my motherboard does not support this "PnP" automatic overclocking that this ram does.

Guess all I can really do is send this stuff back, and get some different ram that doesn't do this "auto overclocking" nonsense and cross my fingers. If amazon will let me of course.

I'm going to tell you, trust me, through experience, gigabyte does not like Kingston memory.

At least around that time and chipset... Ask me how I know

You're better off with 4x4 Gb, or 2x8 NON Kingston.

I would vote corsair or anything on the QVL

I was thinking corsair or crucial. Leaning towards crucial because they have the compatibility checker on their site, and if you buy directly from them, they guarantee the ram will work or your money back. I don't want to keep tempting fate with returning ram sticks to amazon that don't work. Maybe they will just keep taking them, but I'd hate to get stuck with a $120 paperweight.

Incompatibility like this can happen although there rare
The reason for them is the bios so there is a fair chance that the update will help otherwise they wouldn't have suggested it
The mb has dual bios so if the flash fails I believe you should still be able to re flash it
Provided your using the old ram that's stable when you flash it I doubt you will have a problem

Return the ram and try another brand?
Ya, thats what I was thinking in post 6. Just needed to contact them to be sure that I could return it if it doesn't work. I have some crucial ballistix 1600 coming that I'm going to give a shot.

After reading more and more, I am seeing people say that sandy bridge really only officially supports up to 1333 ddr3, although many have gotten faster ram to work with it. I am assuming that the ram I have coming should default to 1333 and the XMP profile would crank it up to 1600. I am also guessing that a possible reason that the kingston stuff didn't work is that while it does overclock to the 1866, it does it automatically, and WITHOUT XMP. Possibly causing my system to shit the bed.

Hopefully the new crucial stuff will be in next week and works lol.

New crucial ballistix tactical 1600 ram works fine. Booted up like normal, turned on XMP and everything is good now. I am assuming my system does not play nice with the auto overclock of the fury ram.

Thanks for the update with resolution.

Bound to someone that comes along with the same issues and at least will be able to see what worked for you.
