Areca timeout error

So here's my setup...

Controller: ARC-1882ix-24 (bought as used, but seller said it was a back-up card and it mostly stayed on shelf, in the box; stock fan replaced with Noctua A4x10 FLX)
BBU: ARC-6120BAT121 (same as above; bought together)
RAID5 array: 3 x 10TB HGST (model HUH721010AL5200, SKU# 0F27352) (brand new SAS interface, 512e sector formatted, ISE drives)
Enclosure: Norco SC-H500 Hot Swap Drive Bays (brand new; stock fans replaced with Noctua NF-R8 redux-1800 PWM)
PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 1000W (brand new, installed a couple of days ago)

All BIOS, BOOT, FIRM and MBR0 .bin files flashed to latest version 1.54

The problem is every time I create the volume set and initialize it (foreground), when initialization is done all 3 drives drop out of the array within seconds.
At first I suspected power management issues since I had an old 520W Corsair PSU. I changed it with the Seasonic and behaviour is the same.

I've started a consistency check, though I don't really believe there's anything wrong with the drives.
Controller, disks and PSU are among the best on the market. Could anyone please help with any advice? I'm starting to become desperate as I don't know what more to do.

I'll attach a CLI screen since I'm too noob to figure out how to export as text.

If I've omitted any info, please feel free to ask!

Consistency check finished. No errors.
I tried changing the cable just to see if it might be faulty. I've inserted the SFF-8087 in the same controller port as the previous one and connected SATA cables in the exact same order as before.
Same behavior, all 3 disks drop out of the array.

P.S. I've edited my previous post as it was a stupid mistake on my side that made me not see all 3 disks.

What firmware version is on the drives?
Can you bypass the enclosure and connect the drives directly to the card? Honestly, the Norco is the biggest wildcard in this setup.

I would also contact Areca support, they are usually really good about helping people out.

All 3 drives have firmware A21D.

That's the only thing I can't test because I don't have cables to connect directly to the SAS drives :(

I did also PM Areca about a week ago, no reply... Tried again this weekend, waiting till tomorrow.

Should I be increasing the Timeout Setting to more than 8 seconds?
Or any other settings here, for that matter?

Well, I've got Default, Disabled, 5 seconds, 6 seconds, 7 seconds.
I wasn't really sure what to set it to, so just left it as Default.

Try setting it to 7 and let's see what happens. Shouldn't need to do this, but until you get the cables to bypass the enclosure it's about all we can do.

Ok, a few things. you said you have the HUH7210AL5200 which is a SAS drive and then in message you mention SATA cables. Your drive and controller are supported devices in HGST HCL so they should be plug and play. if the drop is happening only in the seconds after the array goes live each and every time it is most likely a firmware bug or a HBA problem. if it were a power problem it would most likely happen during the parity zeroing, and not wait hours each time until the exact same point. please post the complete log from your Areca card and for heavens sake please buy one more drive and migrate to RAID6. R5 with 10TB drives is like playing Russian roulette, the chances of failure or an URE of a second drive during a rebuild with the drive sizes you are dealing with almost demand it.

They are SAS drives, but if you'll have a look at the link here, the enclosure has only SATA connectors on the outside. Yes, it's strange they build these only like that even though the enclosure accepts both SAS and SATA drives.
Since the link does specify they are compliant with any RAID configuration (including RAID5 & 6), then it is only logical to assume their backplane properly handles data communication between SAS drives and SATA cables connected... at least in theory.

Just to make sure, these cables should be the ones to buy in order to test behavior by connecting controller directly to drives? Delock SAS SFF-8087 to 4 x SAS SFF-8482. If not, please advise on different cables. Only problem is such cables are hard to find in my country and the ones linked are about the only ones I could find.

The drives don't drop out only after array goes online. I did test ejecting the drives from the enclosure and inserting them one by one. They initially synced when reconnected, but when I did a stress test by running HDTune surface scan, they all dropped out again within minutes.

Believe me, I would have loved nothing more than to go for RAID6, but it was too much of a financial effort. 10TB drives aren't cheap :) Even though I bought them after 12TB were out on the market and prices dropped significantly.
I wanted to buy 2 more drives and switch to RAID6 when 14TB drives came out near the end of the year and hopefully prices dropped a bit more for the 10TB ones.

I will post full Areca log when I get home from work, though there's not much more to see besides what I've initially posted.
I will conduct 2 more tests today:
- put drives in another similar enclosure, just to make sure there's nothing wrong with its backplane (though I doubt it)
- put controller in a different PCIe slot on the MB. The thing is I have an old Asus P5E3 Pro MB and currently controller sits in the second PCIe 2.0 slot which is normally destined for a second GPU. I have no idea if this interferes with anything, but I can only test by putting the controller in an individual PCIe slot, only it's an even older PCIe 1.0 slot.
I know MB is old, I do plan to change it, but I'm waiting on Intel Cannonlake to come out before I do that.

Unfortunately many of those 5-in-3 hackplanes (sp intentional) are of dubious quality and serve to introduce another point of failure. While it is of course possible that your motherboard is a source of trouble (which is of course not on any HCL for the above products) consumer grade motherboard/PCIe HBA failures tend to be complete can't-see-the-card-at-all failures. My suggestion would be try the cable you specced out above and remove the enclosure from the equation completely, recreate the array and rerun your tests.

Thanks for the advice, I will buy the cables and see how everything behaves.
In the mean time, here's the most recent Areca log I have.

I do hope controller temps are appropriate. And also voltages.

I bought the above mentioned cables and bypassed the enclosure. Drives are now connected directly to the controller.
Nothing changed... same timeout errors. It's true they're not as often, but they haven't gone away.

I'm really starting to get worried now :( Do I have a faulty controller?

P.S. The higher temps are because I'm lacking 4-pin molex cables and I didn't have any left to connect PC fans.

I've isolated the problem... finally.

Actually with the help of the person I bought this from.
He told me that what I'm experiencing is most likely an incompatibility issue between controller firmware and HDD firmware. And he was right.
After flashing the controller to every single firmware (BIOS, BOOT, FIRM and MBR0 .bin files) that Areca has stored on their FTP here, the only versions that do not throw my drives out of the array with timeout errors are 1.49 and 1.50. Besides those, none are compatible... from this point of view... which is simply outrageous! It means I have to use a more than 5 year old version because Areca hasn't made any newer firmware compatible with the firmware on the HGST drives (A21D). How is that even possible is beyond me...

Not to mention that ArcHTTP GUI is rarely accessible because even if you can access the main screen where you select the controller, after selecting it the next page almost never loads... Internet Explorer just says "This webpage can't be displayed". Even CLI is hit & miss, sometimes not responding to commands.
This old firmware version also has several missing options, amongst which the one from "Physical Drives => Activate Failed Drive" which is very useful to quickly move past a false positive where the controller throws out of the array a drive incorrectly marked as failed.

And to top it all, Areca support is simply inexistent. I've sent e-mails till now on the 7th and on the 11th of May... simply no reply whatsoever. Not a single suggestion for troubleshooting, not even a "we're sorry you're having trouble with our product, we'll look into this and get back to you" message... nothing!
After reading such good things about Areca's support... this incident has changed my opinion 180 degrees.

I have no idea what distributor conducted what tests with this HGST model (as stated on Areca HDD compatibility list), and I don't know what's the difference between HGST HDD firmware 210 listed on the HDD compatibility list versus A21D factory installed on my drives (which were manufactured in January 2017), but there's something seriously wrong here... I've paid good money on a top rated controller and enterprise grade drives, and they're not working properly.

We have many 10TB SAS HGST drives on 1882 and 1883 controllers running 1.53 in both Supermicro and HPE Proliant hardware. It is possible that you have a faulty controller or are having compatibility issues with your motherboard. Unfortunately this is what happens when you try to blend consumer/non-HCL items and enterprise equipment. Your drives and controller are HCL'd, but your motherboard is not. Are you able to connect to the card via Ethernet directly instead of using the ArC http? While the Arecas are excellent cards with the right equipment, they can be finicky with certain newer and older boards. This is why ALL your hardware end-to-end must be on the HCL for them to kick the problem up to engineering. If it isn't you will often hear them fall back on the fact that it isn't, and quite honestly they aren't going to put much time into fixing a particular incompatibility in a product NOT on the HCL which isn't even of the type of device (old consumer motherboard) that they would expect their customers to use their HBA in. I apologize if this isn't what you want to hear, but it is the way things are.

A further suggestion..... Try calling Kevin Wang at Areca, 886-2-87974060 Ext. 223 (In Taiwan, check the time zone in regard to yours) and you may be able to get more direct help.

Thank you both for those contact details!
Kevin is not answering, but I'll keep trying.

mwroobel: If you have 10TB SAS drives, are they the same model as mine? If yes, can you please check if firmware is the same as mine (A21D)?

MRFSYS: Since we're on totally different time zones (mine is GMT+2) and I'd have to ring up Roger during my night hours in order to catch him at work, any chance I can have his e-mail address and maybe he can provide other troubleshooting tips online?

Right, so I've figured it out.

Two things:
1. Like I've mentioned, I have an older motherboard which only has PCIe 2.0 slots. All firmwares later than 1.50 have a new option introduced in System Controls => System Configuration, called PCIE Gen3 with Enabled/Disabled options... I had to set it to Disabled.

2. I'm using HD Sentinel, a real time HDD monitoring software. But it's an older version: 4.60... and it would seem that it doesn't offer support for SAS drives connected to Areca controllers. Of course, I had no idea about this... I accidentally found out when I disabled it from automatically starting with Windows, and when I tried to manually start it up drives immediately time out.
Beginning with version 5.00 HD Sentinel website says in the change log the following:
* improved compatibility with Areca SAS/SATA RAID controllers, detection of SAS drives in addition to SATA drives on ARECA RAID controllers
And the problem is indeed fixed, my drives are not timed out with this version and SMART is properly read for each drive in the array.
Can't believe it's 2017 and only now they provide such support... for crying out loud, people are using SAS drives for years.

So this has been my experience, hope it helps others.

Thank you to everyone who replied and tried to help me!
