Prey (2017)

Played the demo on xbone tonight.

Game reminds me soooo much of bioshock.

I had to turn the music way down it was making me super tense, I could see that getting real old after a few hours.

Graphics were imho terrible on xbone, hopefully pc is much better.

PC game footage:

I dislike his clickbait title for his video.

The demo was too slow paced, and I didn't like it on the console.
On PC it will be faster, and might be better. The story needs to really intrigue me.

Also, I know that this is Arkane, but the character models looking like they're from Dishonored makes it too cartoony. They could of had their stamp on the game with structural similarities in the buildings or something, not the characters. That kinda took me out of it a bit.

I am really looking forward to it.

I don't know about "best in 20 years" hype... I know better than to fall for that, but there's clearly a quality level here and pedigree influences. Chances are this makes GOTY shortlists for sure.

On the PS4, I could "feel" the 30 fps lock and I know it's going to be better on the PC. I

The story intrigued the hell out of me personally so I'm itching to dive in all the way.

I trust Arkane. I thought Dishonored 2 was GOTY along with Hitman last year so if I'm getting cousin to Dishonored on this then that's good news for me.

I'll never understand why CryEngine never became more popular...I've always felt that it had the best visuals (even better then Frostbite) and with each iteration it became better from a performance and scalability standpoint

Yeah, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 uses CryEngine and it looks incredibly good.

I got it for PC myself and am looking forward to trying it tonight. Hopefully I can download it in time to play it tonight only running on 5mb/s download.

Anyone know how big the PC download is? I tried downloading Doom last night and couldn't finish the 70gb download in time to play it last night.

It's definitely clickbait but it's nice to see some PC footage.

It doesn't look like it performs well on PC though that may change with driver updates and further optimization. I won't be buying this day one.

Pre-load is rumored to be out on the 3rd of May sucks I can't play the game this week due to my limitation of not playing during the work week.

We don't know what kind of machine this was running on, or if they simply locked it to 30 FPS. Doesn't make one feel too optimistic, though.

True. It might run like a dream day one but I have doubts about it. Why no PC demo?

This sparks my interest a bit. I hope it turns out to be good. I remember being excited for it (the original, original) back in the day when the Duke Nukem 3D CD (I think) had images of the first iteration in 1995-98 IIRC, then it never happened. Then they released the 2006 version which I found pretty entertaining but don't recall if I ever finished it. So I suppose due to the initial vaporware aspect of this game, I've always been intrigued by any revival/rebirth of it. The graphics look pretty decent on this one, as do the environments and environmental effects. I'm not sure I dig how much it reminds me of Half-Life but, I'm sure of the game is any good I'll easily overlook that caveat.

How often do you see ANY company put out a PC demo these days, and even if they do, it's not typically until AFTER the game ships. I still maintain that since Steam is the main option for acquiring PC games, and they have a return system that is more than adequate and fair, what could possibly be the need for it?

This isn't intended to be a jerkish comment, but honestly, where will you personally buy an Arkane game? I'd be surprised if it wasn't Steam. Even if you do buy it somewhere else, it probably still needs to be authenticated through Steam. Just curious.

The way I see it, is that there hasn't been a proper game like this since the System Shock games. Sure there have been others with similar plots (space stations, derelict ships, etc.) Dead Space comes to mind, and was in fact pretty good. Alien Isolation was EXCELLENT, but no real combat... SOMA was actually spectacular, but ZERO combat... I see people saying that this is nothing new. While partially true, there is not another game that uses these types of mechanics in this type of setting that has done any better since 1999. System Shock and System Shock 2 being quite possibly my two favorite games of all time, I'm excited to see more games like them.

The Bioshocks were decent games. I really enjoyed the first one especially, but System Shock they are MOST DEFINITELY NOT. In fact, IMO Doom 3 was better at creating some of that feel than BioShock. (if it had a bit of hacking, and more RPG elements it would have wiped the floor with BS). If this game can capture 60% of the feeling of playing the System Shock games on a modern engine, then that's already good enough for me. I have a feeling though that this will do a little bit better than that. You could pile this, the two new System Shock games, (in development) and a few more games with similar settings and game play on me, and I would absolutely not complain.

For the people that haven't enjoyed what they've seen so far, I have to wonder if this is their type of game in the first place. (and it's totally fine if it isn't)

Demos are rare on PC, but considering this game is getting little fanfare it might have helped boost sales / confidence.

GMG, CDKeys.com or Steam. The cheaper the better. But if I don't feel confident about a game I'll buy it on Steam and usually on sale.

Really excited about this game, but definitely waiting for reviews as PC port issues plague every modern game despite what the devs are saying about trying extra super duper hard to make it perfect for the PC. If the reviews validate that I'm in 100% day 1. Fingers crossed, haven't had a good SP shooter experience since Doom last year.

Same. I buy more on Steam than GMG/CDK, but I'll grab things occasionally on those. Usually something I'm absolutely sure about, and want the quick sale price. You just have to be smart about what it is you're willing to do that with. Personally Prey is one of those for me, but then I know what to expect from Arkane. They've had their hiccups, but nothing they didn't fix. There really isn't a developer out there that this isn't true of. (with a couple of exceptions I can think of)

Bethesda's 'no early release copies for review' policy is still in effect so I'm going to wait and see how the PC version is before jumping in...I like Arkane Studios and level design is something I really appreciate in a game so I'm hoping this game is a winner

the developers have mentioned that a playthrough will take 20-40 hours, depending on how deep you want to dive into Talos-I...I like long games with plenty of exploration so this is a positive for me

With Bethesda, it's always best to wait a year or two after release so the mod community has to time fix their horribly broken games. I am finally playing Wolfenstien: The New Order, and having a great time now that it isn't a blurry mess. 144FPS, with DOF disabled and a 110 FOV. Only took a couple years for someone to properly fix the lame 60FPS cap, but hey, I'll take it!

Here's hoping Prey is different and worth buying at release, but I won't get my hopes up. Pre-ordering, or paying full price for any Bethesda game is sheer madness.

This is an Arkane game, not Bethesda, just like Doom isn't Bethesda. They're only published by them.

Also, and granted I didn't get around to playing Wolfenstein for about 3-6 months after release just due to other things, but when I played it there weren't any issues graphically with it at all. Maybe it was fixed in that time. I had never heard there was a problem with it though. Weird. I don't doubt that there could have been a problem either, it's just news to me.

Anyway, I'll know how Prey is as soon as it unlocks on Friday. I'll post some quick thoughts here after I get a chance to try it.

Oh, and I agree on Bethesda-proper games. They usually do need a bit of fixing. Though Skyrim was pretty good for me on release. (which was a nice change :D )

I get your point about them only being publishers for certain titles. DOOM certainly didn't suffer performance issues.

However.... Arkane, they made the Batman games, correct? That's another series I didn't touch due to them being shitty console ports that couldn't run above a smeary 60FPS. I'll definitely have to wait on in-depth reviews for this one.

I don't believe that they had anything to do with Batman, but if they did... I'd be in agreement. Arkane does Dishonored, did Dark Messiah, etc. Dishonored had some performance issues when it came out, but it was a new engine hacked from a slightly older id engine. They got it fixed up pretty quickly. Prey doesn't use the same engine as Dishonored 2 either. This is an educated guess, but I think Prey's launch will be a lot smoother. I never had a single issue with the first Dishonored or Dark Messiah. (I think, and I may not remember correctly, but I thought those were Source based. Not sure though...)

Yeah, my bad, they were not involved with Batman. I have no idea why I thought they were. Dishonored was a great game and Dishonored 2 is my next title after I am done with Wolfenstein. I'm a little leery because I have heard various complaints about Dishonored 2 performance. Here's hoping I have enough brute force GPU power now to avoid issues.

Rocksteady was the Batman developer...I love the Rocksteady Batman series and only the last one (Arkham Knight) had major performance issues...seems like 1 bad title has tainted the entire series...even with the performance problems, story-wise I still loved Arkham Knight

I didn't actually play any of the Arkham games, so I was just going by what I've read. I've also heard quite a bit of good things about them.

those familiar with the comics or Batman universe will appreciate the game more but overall it's a great series regardless just based on gameplay, graphics, story etc

Game looks interesting but I am really confused at what the hell is going on. Did he turn into a gun turret at one point in the trailer?? WTF?

Forgot that Bethesda doesn't allow early reviews anymore, was actually trying to check for the embargo date lol. Doesn't matter, I' already have it pre-ordered for a good price. I can't imagine them messing this up bad enough to want a refund.

There is a demo out too if you wanted to try it. Granted you have a console. Playing it yourself is way better then any review.. No one reviews games for you, better then yourself :)

Pre-ordered it as well after playing the Demo on PS4.. Game runs on a PC engine and is not open world so will run probably really well on everyones Machines.

Call me gun-shy, but I'm waiting until you guys try it first, then I'll consider it.

Besides, I have a huge backlog I'm trying to work through before I can even consider a new game.

My OCD states I must complete my current games first! :ROFLMAO:

Unlocked it with my vpn - game runs smooth so far on the opening part. all setting maxed, 21:9, 1080ti. 90-100fps

No FOV slider but You can change the fov in C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey and edit game.cfg & change cl_hfov to whatever.

The ps4 demo was dogshit compared to this.

Nice! I figured as much. The Arkane people are smart enough not to make the same mistake again.

Open world game vs corridor shooter game. Let's think why it might run better :O

When you compare it to a 1080 Ti.. Ya i can see why you would think its dog shit.

Prey on PC runs better than Dishonored 2- PC Gamer

Prey's graphics settings are pretty lackluster compared to many recent PC releases, although that's more down to the scope of the game...the keyboard is fully rebindable, although the controller isn't...Prey runs smoothly based on the two PCs I've tested...one, running a Nvidia 1070 on a Gsync monitor, is averaging just over 100fps on Very High preset at 1440p in a borderless window...as yet, it hasn't dropped below about 90fps...it's completely smooth

AMD also seems mostly fine...I tested an R9 Fury X at 1440p, again in a borderless window...it didn't drop below 60fps with Vsync enabled...
