Netflix Gives Controversial "13 Reasons Why" Series More Viewer Warnings

I guess I don't see what the big deal is about having a warning. The individuals that have an issue and overreacting about this are potentially not parents or don't have anyone in their lives where this type of content can be a severe trigger. Sometimes an MA rating doesn't necessarily mean that rape and depictions of actual suicide are going to be present. This type of subject material can be triggering to those who have experienced it in the past. Try to see it from that angle rather than just claiming that everyone is a bunch of whining Nancies. There's more to this than what you automatically assume.

It was really fucking hard on me when my mom killed herself last July. I'm still dealing with issues from it. So no, not only in the persons mind that killed themself.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I do hope you are getting the help you need. My condolences.

Wow... /r/the_donald is a hive of scum and villainy. I'm sure the /d (if there's such a thing) forum is the same way.

I'll just keep walking and be glad I never use/have used reddit

I wouldn't judge the entirety of Reddit based on a single really shitty outlying community.

Not all of reddit is horrible. ELI5 and Life Pro Tips are pretty cool. DataIsBeautiful can be quite interesting also

My thirteen year old daughter watched this... and no big deal. Still I could see how some kids could take this the wrong way. This show isn't exactly aimed at us middle aged old men. My only issue with the story in general is that some children could perhaps misread the story a bit. They could see a kid who choose suicide which leads to others taking stock, paying for wrongs ect... all the things you may want to convince a teen thinking that way are not outcomes of such a choice.

In my case my daughter is mature enough to handle just about anything in a story or on a screen. Thankfully perhaps I installed in her long ago that if your going to watch a shitty movie or tv version of something that exists in written form. You take the novel or short story in first. She had already read this book before watching the show. (not related but one of the best moments of my dad life, when the lights went up after the martian and my then 12 year old said ehhh book was better, they cut to much out. lol)

More parents instead of getting upset when their kids watch a TV-MA show without them knowing... should just make the simple rule. Watch anything TV-MA / R you want as long as you have read the book first. lol

How the hell do you keep a 17 year old from watching whatever they want?
A 17 year old has the cognitive capacity to understand everything. At least if brought up well. I mean at 17 you can already drive a car which is a serious business as it can cause death and serious injury if done irresponsibly. So by that age anyone should be able to handle the reality of the world. Or if not, well then they can still become sjws and go to gender studies and social studies classes.

Nothing wrong with informing consumers about the product.

Please keep finding more dumb shit to be outraged about.

Sometimes it feels like half of the commenters here are this guy. Also Megalith.

Then dont watch a show that in its fracking description talks about a girl killing herself. Problem solved.

Your house, your rules. You control the tv. There are plenty of parental controls available. A simple one for netflix is to not have the password saved. Problem solved.

They might go around you and pay for it themselves...but thats a discipline problem not a problem with the content. Do you think they give two shits (the teenager) about warnings? Nope...all that porn I saw as a kid I just clicked right past the you must be 18 yrs old to look at this warnings....

Clicked? I remember finding random old grainy vhs tapes of pron and thinking they were the holy grail.

Gawd I'm old.

as I understand it, part of the outrage is driven by data that suggests that media that shows / glorifies teenage suicide actually encourages such behavior. The argument is that if parents allow their mentally unstable children to watch the series, we may see a spike in teenage suicide.

I see where they are coming from on this point, but still think it's up to parents to be more involved in their kids' lives.

A lot of emotional outburst and rage about a content description. it really isn't so much about people being soft, it seems moreso that people absolutely cannot accept change especially when the change is to benefit someone other than themself.

I do agree, if something really bothers you in a show, don't watch it. But without such information upfront, how would you know or at least be warned enough to do some background searching first?

Should we just let our kids watch debbie does dallas at age 5 because well thats real life? lol. Hope I didn't reveal age too much with that though, has anyone actually seen that video though? Terrible quality, I don't know what the big deal was back then about it.

wtf ever, get off mah lawn!

The great unasked question is why is bullying and teen suicides becoming such a big problem today? What has changed over the last several generation? I'm blaming feminists and SJW's...

My dad was in the navy so every two years we would move from one part of the country to another. I would be placed in the "smart" class and on day one of my new school the bully's would be lining up to check out the new nerd (I was tall and skinny). There was no way for them to know I would later fight golden gloves and full contact karate (kickboxing). By day three all the dorks and geeks in my class would be all about making friends and the bullies would be leaving me and my new friends alone. It is my understanding that this cannot happen today. With a zero tolerance policy for fighting are the stronger kids protecting the weak or are they not getting involved? Feminism/SJW only leads to a "lord of the flies" reality...

Bullying is more rampant and easier to achieve due to cyberbullying on digital/social networking platforms. It's a huge problem.

Phones and social media. Rumors can spread like wildfire and destroy someones reputation in an instant. Words sadly hit harder than fists these days.

Your naive response is adorable really.

Growing up in Detroit I've seen worse things than what 13 Reasons why showed. These people have no idea of what really goes on in the world outside of their little sheltered area.

There is plenty of ways to get that without every show, movie or other form of entertainment giving you 15 minutes of warning of why you might be offended. The brief warning they had on two episodes I personally felt were a tad overboard. It is a show about a girl that killed herself and is going through the 13 people that lead her to do it. Of course the show will be about suicide.

If you want to make educated choices then do it on your own without forcing your views and opinions on everyone else. That is your job to parent your kids and nobody else.

This. If you didn't think this would be about suicide and unpleasant teenagerness, then you couldn't be bothered to read the blurb describing the show. The special snowflakes seem to think it is someone else's problem to make sure their brains are plugged in and watching out for their own interests.

Uhh no. Bullying has ALWAYS been a huge thing.

What has changed is that it has become harder to establish a space you don't have to worry about that shit, AND it happens in front of a lot more witnesses who can't be bothered to give a shit. Which sends a certain kind of message you could at least pretend wasn't the case in the past.

If you have a 17 year old that doesn't respect you as a parent then you fucked up a while ago and it's probably too late for recovery. At that point I would think you would rather them watch stuff like this than some of the other stuff on the web.

As a parent your primary jobs should be 1) keep your kids safe and 2) teach them to make good decisions. Content warnings help accomplish #1 but #2 is all you.
Why would anyone respect a helicopter parent that puts viewing restrictions on a 17 year old.

Correct - I'm not denying that bullying has always been an issue, it's that cyber-bullying is a huge problem and it manifests and perpetuates quicker and differently than it ever has before.

I was more surprised about the language in the show. It's a drama <genre>, so they can go down whatever social issue path they want. I was just most put off by the normalization of cursing by youth. Notice I said normalization.....NOT the fact that high school kids cuss.

As I said, this show is a drama, which allows for creative expression and freedoms because it's understood that it is made up. No problem. I am far more concerned about Bill Nye Saves The World on Netflix which is presented as FACT and actually does push social narratives on people in a way that they will assume are accurate. 97% of all Bill Nye's agree the science is settled.

I tried to watch this show but could not. Am I only the only one who didn't care at all for this show?

I think the anonymity of the Internet (lack of direct confrontation) has simply allowed a more accurate representation of how humans really are. Humans are assholes. Arbitrary rules of society is the only thing that keeps it at bay.

If it really "triggers" (FFS) them beyond turning it off and watching something else, they should deal with their mental problems as they have serious issues. Oh, and read the description before watching. And avoid anything remotely close to their triggers. Better yet, isolate themselves in a bubble.

Maybe they are triggered by increasing numbers of special snowflakes and the world changing to accomodate the increasing pussification.

Should Debbie have come with multiple trigger_warningsTM or was the possibility of various sexual positions expected for such content?

I would say the advent of technology pushed bullying to new levels. I was bullied plenty in elementary and middle school but usually by 1 guy who was part of the "cool clique". So even though this one guy and his friends would make fun of me no one else really cared because they didn't have the same classes as those kids or didn't pay attention to what they had to say. So I was bullied but at the same time I had my group of friends that I hung out with so it wasn't a big deal to me. Now a days kids record themselves bullying other kids into making them cry or pull down their shorts or catch them doing something weird and then send it as a mass text or social media. Once that happens, it's all downhill for that kid because no one wants to be associated with the "weirdo, freak, crybaby, etc.." and that can just have devastating effects to a kid when their social lives fall down the gutter.

Also this show is was basically another teen drama with a suicide as the plot element. It's not that good and the pacing was frustrating.

I watched it, at my nieces request. And as always, suicide makes me angry. My viewpoint, going back to my teenage years, was that if (back in those days I said when, but I'm a much more zen soul now that I have a couple extra decades of seasoning) the time came that suicide looked like a viable way out, then clearly rather than murdering myself, I should instead murder those who really needed it. Suicide, when you are still of able mind and body, is an act of cowardice.

You immediately lose credibility when you use the term snowflake.

I don't see the issue with the warning. It's like those episodes of law and order that are a little more "disturbing" where every other commercial they have a viewer discretion warning.

Man. Reading the synopsis of the show i think anyone decides to click on that must be wanting to see that kind of thing. Not sure how a warning matters much. Sounds like a real fucking downer to me. I like Comedy. Pretty much got my dose of real life, death suicides, fucked up shit. And compared to what i've seen it ain't shit to what others have seen. It's kind of hard to be into like serious violence any more with the way the world is today, or has always been, but we see much more of it now. All of a sudden some flick that shows someone getting their head chopped of or something ain't so fun any more. I have no interest to watch that shit any more. I guess that what it's like getting old. It's all fun and funny, until it's actually real, then it ain't so funny any more.

You missed what I was responding to. Someone wrote that committing suicide is only traumatic to the person killing themself. Which is untrue. My mom killed herself and it was traumatic to me.

This goes to further the point that people aren't seeing it from both sides. They would rather call everyone a bunch of whiny sissies than understand that a simple warning really causes zero inconvenience.

Maybe they don't like the font?
People will find anything to complain about. I complain about things. Though only things that I think matter. This is not one of those things.

Lol I love shows like this. Only point to them is to capture inquisitive minds with a tantalizing subject. Haven't seen it, don't want to, and probably won't ever. I couldn't stand watching unrealistic teen drama when I was 14, and at 33 it makes me laugh hysterically at how stupid and terrible these shows are. I can never watch them for more than 10 seconds before I see something so bizarre and off that I have to leave the room, the shame of watching something so stupid is unbearable to me. I don't like to watch shows where dramatic people do dramatic things and end up with dramatic results good or bad, its as unrealistic as you can get. The world itself creates enough drama, people don't need to go about adding more to it. If I want my dose of reality i will go down to the bar and watch all the silly things people do so they can sleep with eachother.

While searching for some stats and stuff to make me look smart on the interwebs, I came across some cool numbers that would give concrete support for a gun ban justification. 7 out of 10 suicides were white males. About 50% of all suicides involve a firearm. 2/3 of all firearm related deaths are due to suicide. 2016 had over 40k suicides, meaning at least 20k were done using a gun. The FBI homicide rate for 2016 was about 15k, meaning only about 8k of those deaths were because of a gun. What does this all mean you ask? Well it means exactly what the numbers say, you are 200%+ more likely to intentionally kill yourself with a gun than to have someone else do it. In fact you are more likely to kill yourself before some hispanic/aftrican/asian/insertPCracehere does it. Its also kind of ironically funny, as the most stereotyped gun owners are white males...

Ban guns, White Male lives matter.

This goes to further the point that people aren't seeing it from both sides. They would rather call everyone a bunch of whiny sissies than understand that a simple warning really causes zero inconvenience.
The problem is, the side complaining is the one not seeing both sides. And they never stop with a simple warning. They are upset because their son/daughter watched this, and they wholeheartedly believe their teen is innocent and this type of stuff will corrupt them, so instead of watching it themselves first to decide whether or not it is appropriate they would rather their be some label to tell them the show may not be suitable for children. Its like back in the 80's when all the cool toys were getting banned left and right because stupid parents gave it to their kids unsupervised and they hurt themselves or worse. Rather than blame their own terrible parenting they blame everyone else instead. Kids still die left and right from toys that have warning labels plastered all over them, yet it does nothing to prevent the parents from placing the blame elsewhere. I have a 2yo kid. He puts stuff in his mouth that is not edible. I don't rely on a package to tell me its a choking hazard, he has teeth, it can become a choking hazard in an instant if im not watching. I have no illusions when it comes to kids and the things they are facing or doing. People are up in arms about a bigger warning label on this show... then where's the warning label for my car saying that I could die in a horrible terrible accident? Where is the warning label to tell you your child may be exposed to porn and videos of actual murder/rape when they interact with a web browser? If it were just about a warning label, then a simple petition to netflix on making the content of a show more visible would have worked. Instead they went the social justice route which is literally akin to the mob mentality of days of yore, so grab your torch and pitchfork we got ourselves a witch to burn!

You can't save your kids from the world, you can only prepare them for when the world happens.

I'm just as much against these warnings as the next person.
Honestly after watching the rape episode, I felt very uncomfortable and actually wished there was a bit of a stricter warning on that one episode.

It was VERY hard to watch.

The suicide, didn't really hit home for me much, it was fine.
