I have a 36 bay Supermicro server with redundant power supplies and the fans on the PSU's run even when the system is turned off. They are not particularly loud but they are loud enough to annoy me. How do I make it so they only run when the server is powered on?

These are the PSU's.

Take it apart and wire the fan off a 12V lead that is only active when the power supply kicks on.

Might also be worth an email to support asking if there is a reason for the always on fans. Maybe the PS generate enough heat in standby to need some cooling.

BTW - Ocellaris's idea seemed worth exploring to me.

These power supplies are not normally user serviceable and I would not want to even attempt to rewire one.

Which is all moot anyway. I contacted Supermicro support like you suggested and I was told the the PSU's are providing the server with 3.3V in standby mode and that without the fan on, the PSU would overheat. It seems I may need to either learn to live with the noise or unplug the server when I am not using it.

get a power strip,
