Verizon Offering $70 FiOS Gigabit Service for New Customers

The Northeast U.S. can get ready to rev up their favorite streaming sites, as Verizon is now offering Gigabit Connection via their FiOS internet service. New and existing customers in areas of Boston, Providence, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Hampton Roads, VA., and Richmond, VA can purchase the gigabit-tiered speed for a monthly $69.99 price. While not at true gigabit bandwidth, Verizon is claiming the service will attain 940 Mbps download, and 880 Mbps upload speeds.

… Verizon’s network performance exceeded expectations as Instant Internet customers regularly saw actual speeds well over the advertised 750 Mbps/750 Mbps. Verizon has since fine-tuned the service with new firmware and diagnostic tools to increase performance even more.

Existing Instant Internet customers in the service region will have their monthly rates decreased, while speeds are increased to the Gigabit Connection tier, though these new rates have not been explicitly stated. While not being eligible for this newer monthly price, existing customers can revel in the fact of paying less for faster service. Meanwhile, those of us pining for better service will continue to wait for better offerings.
 
$70 is a steal of a price...I have FiOS- 50/50 internet...am happy with it but good to know that they are offering competitive prices in case I decide to upgrade
 
Temporary promotion. $10 per month for router unless you buy their Verizon router for $150. Taxes and other fees not included.

Still better than their old plans, at least temporarily for new customers.

10TB is the soft cap that isn't often enforced. 70TB+ is one well documented case of someone actually being terminated.

I have 150/150 and as of this afternoon all I can do is go to 300/300 for $105 more or 500/500 for $205 more. Hopefully it just isn't rolled out in my area yet.

*edit* Here's my latest yamon stats to show my use, no complaints from them yet.

The effin gas company here has a run that goes right down and stops at the street corner <2 damn houses distance from us and doesn't go around the circle (racetrack circle LOL). No plans to run lines down our street. Eff them.

So I know how you feel about being *that* close.
 
Why do new customers only get this price? I just called up and it would cost me $196 per month with out any tv or phone. Bundle comes to be close to the same. Not really fair that existing customers can't take advantage of the offer.
 
My house here in Florida is in a non-incorporated area of the county, and had no hope of ever getting FIOS for the few dozen houses on the other side of a river (well, large creek, but they call it a river). For the longest time, 1.5 Mbps DSL was the best we could do.

Then the nearest town started trying to incorporate our area and the first step in that process was to put people on city water instead of well water. That million dollar boondoggle to get city water lines run out here (only about 5% of the people opted to go with city water instead of their private wells) did accomplish one thing...Verizon piggybacked on the trenches with fiber lines. So as of last month we're finally in a FIOS area. Bad news is Verizon sold their Florida business to Frontier before they ever finished, and Frontier is a shit-show that makes Comcast look professional.

Because just like cable companies they like to screw their existing customers.
New customers $90 per month for internet/cable/phone. Existing customers $180 per month

Usually the only way existing customers can get a decent price is to call up and cancel their service and hope they get offered a better deal.

You're lucky. I'm charged $70/month for 25/5 from Comcast. I wish I had access to FIOS.
 
I wish comcast didn't have Miami by the balls. For a city that already has FIOS run nearly everywhere we have been incredibly slow to adapt.
 
There is only one area in Norfolk, VA that has FIOS (phone and internet only, no TV service), the new expensive residential area 2 miles from me called East Beach.
FIOS is available in all of the surrounding cities except Norfolk, I am pretty sure it was Cox that kept FIOS out of Norfolk.

We pay $99.99 for 300/30 with Cocks.
 
Meh, they didn't even finish their rollout in my area before selling it to Frontier. But took the tax breaks....
 
Meh, very happy with gigapower, no cap. Something like $140 out the door with 5 or 6 static IPs, and phone service with international plan.

Find a place that has locally run fiber. Longmont, Co has Nextlight. $50/month for 1gig up/down and no cap (and no extra costs for equipment)

Where I am staying in NC we have Suddenlink. 50/5 for $39.99/month is their lowest tier and I could opt for up to 1Gb at $99.99/month. Their service is via cable, not fiber, and I haven't opted for the highest tier yet, so I don't know what the actual speeds would be, but I imagine it should work out fine (my modem is rated for up to 1.2Gb). It is a hell of a lot better than the $69.95 I was paying for 25/2 in upstate NY.

There is fiber available via CenturyLink in the area. We use it at the office. It costs a bit more for their residential service, which is why I opted for Suddenlink. Suddenlink can't connect us at the office though.

It is nice to see FIOS expanding. I don't think they would bother in this area given that we already have more true high speed service providers than a lot of the country (Verizon DSL at 3/0.5 doesn't count as true high speed to me).

I could see myself hosting a few more game servers if I had 1Gb up and down at home...Or streaming in HD instead of standard quality because of data caps...

The point isn't necessarily so you can be uploading and downloading at 1gbps. But if you have multiple people in your home using the internet for data intensive things like a couple of people doing 4k streams while you're wanting to use a bunch of bandwidth for something, at least for now having a gigabit connection means you effectively don't have to worry about it what anyone else is doing.

Then on top of that, you can actually do things like use remote backup solutions(server hosted elsewhere, cloud service, etc.) and have the bandwidth to not be spending as long downloading a few TB of data when you need to recover something, and even your backups can run quicker.

So it's not always about fully utilizing it 24/7, it's about having enough throughput that you don't care.
 
From elsewhere I'm seeing mention of April 30th being the actual date it will be pushed out on a more widespread basis, so those (like myself) who are checking often should wait a week.

I dont believe that anyone can be worse than Comcast....except maybe United.
 
Wow thanks for posting this. I ended the month to month thing I had with Verizon about 4 months ago. I just called them and am getting back onto Verizon after seeing this deal. Had Verizon's old plan of 50/50 then I switched to Comcast's 250/30 deal and now gonna go back to Fios.

I love being in the DC area..

There's an easy solution to the whole new/existing customer BS... just cancel your service and sign up again! I just did it, everything was handled in a single call and it will actually save me $30 compared to what I currently pay!!! The installer will be at my house Saturday morning to upgrade my service! This is the second time I did this, I did it two years ago to get 150/150 at the discounted rate.

Wait, you switched from FIOS to Comcast?! Comcast must have thought they had found a unicorn with you! You couldn't pay me to go to that shit-show they call an ISP or "HD" TV.

I never have. It's there though and it's nice knowing i'm maxed with the other side when receiving or sending data - cloud backup is actually possible now!

Multiple people watching videos/gaming no difference in performance either. I may consider getting a pfSense box up and running soon

The reps are clueless.
One of them told me that because i was an existing customer it would be 174.99 per month. Then they went on to say that the 69.99 was only for new customers but only for a year, then the price goes up to 174.99.
Usually they just give a promo discount for like 10$ a month for the first year.

I can't really seem to find the standalone pricing after year one on any website/press release. I see only the bundle is being promoted.
 
I got the FU for being their existing customer even though website says it is available to my address. It was the same thing when they had other offers or speed increases, currently on 150/150 (had 300/300 for a bit but felt there were not able to saturate it to justify insane cost, like $270/mo). Existing customers get shafted. Only other option is Comcast but they want just as much money and have a much less reliable service. I really hate Verizon routed but due to MOCA stuff it's a real pain to work around it.
