In quietly hosting a countdown timer leading to a full reveal, Activision has announced its newest iteration of the Call of Duty series - Call of Duty: WWII.

A livestream event will coincide the countdown’s conclusion on April 26th, likely revealing gameplay videos and a release date. Not many details are currently available beyond the development team, and this admittedly interesting promotional shot. Activision has tasked Sledgehammer Games with bringing the franchise back to its World War II era roots, hoping to bring some of the acclaim and excitement the 2003 title Call of Duty contained. In the meantime, a very nice write-up behind the history of the franchise's ventures into World War II can be read on the Activision Blog.

I don't think I'll buy IW but don't think they should be earnest or have games in the past at this point, and the guns should be speculative, 3D-printing ammo continuously or energy railguns, etc.

I love the WW2 era. I had a blast with W@W. The only thing I would like to see is bigger maps than what they have pumped out lately.

I want this. I want a GOOD (I'm putting a lot of faith into this, obviously!) WW2 shooter. CoD 1 & 2 were my favorites. Medal of Honor was great, too. I think if done right, with a modern engine, this could be very good. I'm looking forward to it.

(please don't fuck it up, please don't fuck it up)

So let me get this, a video game set in the hardly unknown conflict known as WW2 that no game has ever tackled before. This is some epic level of innovation here.

It's not innovative at all. But, the originals are very dated if you go back and play them. Put them in a modern engine, up the scale a bit (larger maps, co-op, etc.), change some play mechanics (nothing outrageous), and it should be great. Nothing new, but it's updating the old stuff.

I want to crap on this idea, but in the end I'm probably going to enjoy a new WW2 shooter with a modern engine........especially when I'm using that MP40 to assault that Oil Rig.....

Modern engine? Ain't they still using a very heavy modified version of the quake 3 engine still for these games? You would think with the billions this series made they would of actually made a modern engine for this game by now. At least source a current one.

This will be number 14.

heh times flies, I take it then that "boycott" from back in the day didn't really put the fear of god into them?

Personally I haven't played a COD game since the first MW, them pumping them out once a year like Madden was a major turn off for me.

Sales for the series didn't start to decline until Advanced Warfare, as far as I know. They still make money hand over fist. I've personally always enjoyed the COD games for both the SP and MP. They're good, fun games that you can turn your brains off with. But I do understand some of the criticism, as COD and Halo both took FPS design trends in questionable directions due to their financial success.

As the only COD game I actually played is Black Ops, and I liked it, this doesn't bother me at all. I was interested in infinite warfare, but just didn't get it for some reason, maybe when it's discounted.

I wish for once they made a game where you can be on the Axis side. But I doubt this will be it.

I assume you're talking about in the campaign mode?

I seriously doubt the world would accept such a thing. I'd imagine the EU would ban the game outright. Hell, it's an actual crime to deny the holocaust in several of those countries. I imagine that it would record sales in the middle east though.

Wait...
The original Call of Duty WAS a WWII game. Came out to compete with BF1942.
So, Full circle it is just like NeoNemesis said... <sigh>

I don't have a problem with taking a beloved game, and giving it modern TLC. Maybe I just have really high hopes for the upcoming FFVII Remake release.

People should stop being so afraid of their own history. Trying to ignore it won't help. In fact I find it pathetic.

Why would playing out a historical event on a specific side equate to holocaust denial? That's nonsense. It's like you're saying playing on the US side is denying the internment of Japanese Americans during the war. Or playing on the Russian side equals denying gulags ever existed.

So video games have come full circle since the early 2000s and everyone is making WW2 games again. Cool.

Now we just need Battlefield.

I am not saying those things at all. I'm saying that there are a lot of places in Europe that are still VERY VERY touchy when it comes to WWII. Look at their regulations, combine with butthurt and shame, and you end up with a banned game.

I'm cool with this. Except the name. Call of Duty is ww2 and they tacked on the subtitles to let us know it wasn't.
So they should just call it call of duty because it is.

I'm not sure, but the most recent games look 100x better than the original.

Since they're not lords of the world they can only ban the game in germany. If they so wish they can do it. I've written off germany as a loss a long time ago. They're so afraid of their history that they'd rather forget it, repress it. I fear it will only make them repeat past mistakes. Just look at their obsession with privacy, and the migrant crisis they single handedly caused, by bad pr that continues to this day. It will end in tears and suffering for them sooner or later,

Cool. It will be fun to play another WW2 game. Hopefully it will stack up to COD & United Offensive.

I may be one of few but BF1 is fun, while it could be better with there were more custom servers, if WWII is done right it could be fun..

I don't have a problem with this.
It's been awhile since we had WW2 games

If this turns out to be decent, it will be the first COD game I get since World at War.

I love WW2 themes. The orig CoD was amazing and I played it to no end. That was when Infinity Ward was in charge, now that Activision is at the helm, the series has taken a downturn. Hopefully it turns out good.

How lame is this shit? WWII has been done to death.

People bitched, but I liked COD: Infinite Warfare - I like space stuff, and advanced stuff, and anything that isn't fucking WWII stuff. How about a COD: WWIII - takes places just after the bombs fall, that'd be fun.
