Lords of the Fallen developer Deck13 has revealed new gameplay of its upcoming sci-fi adventure The Surge...described by Deck 13 as being Dark Souls-like, The Surge is set in the future after plans to stop global warming backfired and the only survivors are outfitted with slick exo-suits...The Surge is due in 2017 on PS4, Xbox One and PC...

"It's like Dark Souls" is hit #11 (top of page 2) on a Google search for "it's like".

I don't see much Dark Souls in that trailer but I like the sci-fi setting...if they can actually make a Dark Souls-like game in space, that would be amazing...Lords of the Fallen was actually pretty decent as well for a Dark Souls copycat...seems like every game Deck13 makes they are comparing it to Dark Souls

I'm guessing "it's like Skyrim" is #1.

No other game was in the first ten pages. Try it yourself, I used Private Browsing. Results may vary, it changed position on the second page within a minute and the results seem to be mostly current news events.

I got this:

I watched the e3 dev interview thing and this looks pretty cool. but if its too much like dark souls I couldn't get into it. I hated the dodge dodge dodge dodge dodge dodge hit dodge dodge dodge...

Could be fun. I liked Lords of the Fallen a lot, at least after they patched up most of the bugs.
Nearly every 3rd person action game at E3 had strong elements of Dark Souls. While I like those games, the idea of real people rolling on the ground over and over is a little ridiculous.

That looks amazing. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it, as long as they don't start with DLC shenanigans like they did with Lords of the Fallen.

Don't get me wrong, this looks cool, but...we're supposed to believe that in the future, fighting will be done with electric swords and no guns anywhere?

Looks nice I suppose they wanted to get away from the Lords of Fallen thing and see if Sci-fi setting world work out.
I haven't seen any gameplay untill today.

doesn't really look like Dark Souls to me...I do see the Dead Space comparisons with targeting a specific weak point on the enemy...gameplay looks kind of bland but I'll be keeping an eye on this and see what people are saying when the game is released

Too many games are picking up the "Souls-like" aspects of collecting your stuff when you die, and having a (perceived) high level of difficulty.

Too few games embrace the world-building, level design, lore, and thoughtful enemy design which make the above bearable.

I enjoy action games and looks kinda cool from what I've seen, but as soon as I saw "Lords of the Fallen Devs" it got me back tracking the hell out of it.

Haven't gotten around to Lords of the Fallen, but everything I read about it suggests it was pretty lackluster?

game has gone gold, release in May
the melee looks interesting to me. not sure the complaints. guns are cool and shit, but melee is good for a change of pace.
10% off

Game looks decent I like the oversized Boss fights like fighting a transformer in Dark Souls.

The thing that doesn't click with me is the move sets with your character I mean if your character looks totally different later in the game that would be nice but your
Mecha guy doesn't look very cool from the start I wonder if the armor will alter the character like in Lords of the Fallen.

you may find this video interesting. you can equip different armor on different body parts. also cut off parts from enemies to use for yourself.

If you make it too fluid it looks bad too clunky is mind numbing. I got to the last boss in lords of the fallen.

I'm guessing "it's like Skyrim" is #1.

:D

You'd guess, but you'd be wrong.

It's like Rogue.
It's like Metroid.
It's like Castlevania.

Now combine any or all of these in any order, and that SHOULD be #1.

they need to stop comparing this to the Souls games...this is not Dark Souls...yes there are a few similarities but overall this is not Dark Souls by any stretch

there are a lot of comparisons that can be made. In the case of lords of the fallen the combat used very similar mechanics. Playing KB/M on dark souls then KB/M on LoF everything worked the same. The levels also were very interconnected. And finally there were lots of secret areas. The surge sounds like it is going to do much of the same with some exceptions. Granted LoF was weak story wise, also lacking in terms of "classes", and finally no MP.

The point here is not that they are stealing dark souls mechanics, just that the mechanics are great and should be used by more games, vs the regenerating health meta.

Lords of the Fallen was definitely a Dark Souls copycat but this Surge game does not have the same feel although it shares some DNA...I think a lot of games want players to think it'll be Dark Souls-like just to get people interested

this game could go either way for me...could be really good or could be the opposite...trailers all look decent but nothing which really wows me...I liked Lords of the Fallen so hopefully this can at least match that

Game comes out next week the 16th could be a boom or a bust looks really different like a marriage with Metal.

New Boss battle maybe Boss #2 Fire Bug I wonder how this game plays out it's either going to be frustrating or just piss people off so they don't play it.

This is my take on the game without even playing it I think being all Mecha takes away the personal side of the game when you are fighting you might see some human elements in the Mecha machines you are fighting like Transformers transforming into cars and trucks. The closest thing I seen this game is the Tower Knight Boss in Demon Souls which spills out oil or blood when you hit it's ankles. I don't see much of a Human side to this game it's just impersonal stuff you are fighting without any value to it that makes it curious or interesting that has a human element or even a monster element to it then again I could be wrong and this game will totally rock which I don't think will be any better than Dead Space I II or III.

It just doesn't look very fun the combat is really out of sync I'm not sure if this is done on purpose but it just looks clunky with backflips and stuff just looks like one bad dream. I think if you had more organic monsters the game would come off better rather than machines without a personality or a simulation. Or take General Knoxx talking to you in Borderlands I now that is a intresting and fun fight with alot of build up behind it.

I agree with you for the most part...playing as a mech somewhat takes away some of the appeal for me...if I want to play a good mech game I'll play Titanfall 2...merging mechs with a Dark Souls clone somewhat feels off...I hope I'm wrong but I'd much rather play a fantasy or sci-fi human character...that said that boss fight video you linked was pretty decent so I'm still torn on this game...I want it to be really good
