NCASE M1 Softshell Carry Bag for community

Wahaha, your idea for a wheeled carry-on that could include computer, monitor, and clothes has me very interested, but have you considered what you will do if you have to get on one of those little planes that make you check your wheeled carry-ons at the gate? Do you have a way that you can quickly remove the computer so it doesn't get tossed around with the other luggage?

You cloth should be enough cushion for accessories like keyboard /mouse/cables. So the only problem is the PC and Monitor.

Off the top of my head, for quick removal of PC and Monitor - custom sized packing cubes with a handle.

For the pc, you can take the cloth out of the duffle (into the carry-on), and out the PC in it. For the monitor, maybe the flight crew will allows you to put it underneath the seat.

24" monitor are only few mm short of the carry-on limit, which means there is nearly no room for padding = if checked in, the monitor will be damaged. So if your itinerary is showing a small plane, just don't bring a 24" monitor. However, you should be able to put 22" or less monitor (LG 21.5" UltraFine 4K Display) into a protective carry-on case (like the Pelican 1510) to be checked in, do it at your own risk - I have never done it.

If standard carry-on size is not allowed, I suggest just putting the M1/A4/Razer Core into the Duffle, get some 15" portable monitor by Asus or GeChic. That's an entire setup into a duffle.

I check this thread every day for an update. I need this bag in my life.

Haha, I just made an account to say the same. There's probably quite a few people watching this thread hoping for a softshell carry on.

I just made account to say i will buy one too. It would be great if it could ship together with Ncase.

Just made an account to say I would jump at the chance to get one of these ASAP! Add me to the list.

Given that the production from the bags and the cases are from different manufacturers, I'm guessing that is a no. Unless Lian-Li recently unveiled a bag making subdivision that is.

ye but shipping to my country is 40$ and paying that twice is a lot so i hope there will be possibility to order Ncase + carry bag and pay one shipping

The bag is made in different country from the M1, and the shipping box for the M1 will not fit the bag and the M1 (custom boxes would be required).

The M1 is in Taiwan, the duffle is in mainland China. To move the M1 to China or duffle to Taiwan will cost additional 15%-20% duty and other fees. So it's cheaper to just ship each separately.

The bag is soft, if all goes well, it will be 1) cheaper and 2) faster to ship than the M1.

Do you think it would be reasonable to expect the bag (with delivery) by June 1st? Planning ahead for a flight I have that week. Thanks by the way for all the effort and time you've sunk into this, the bag looks amazing!

I was hoping for just a duffle for the M1, is this turning into a carry on monitor addition situation?

The carry on will not be ready until our next PCX project finalizes, so just duffle for now.

Internally, we are debating crowdfunding vs pre-order, will make an update before end of month.

Oh we are talking monitors in carry on luggage? Why don't you ask your resident expert :) ? I started researching this topic and buying relevant monitors in 2011 and I must say I know everything there's to know about them. I have owned or still own a Samsung LD220G, an AOC E2251FWU (this is actually the only one that I do not have any more, reasons below), an AOC e2351F, a HP L2201x and an AOC M2060SWD -- and a Sharp LL-S201A. First of all, I will not talk of any monitor below full HD, I just couldn't care less of any such.

Let's see:

  1. DisplayLink monitors -- these use compression to fit the display signal onto a USB bus. USB 3.0 should be enough bandwidth wise as 1920x1080 60Hz requires 3.32 Gbit/s and the real world throughput of USB 3.0 has been measured to be 446-447 MByte or just below 3.6 GBit/s. But one very small company producing drivers alone is not quite cutting it. Only usable with Mac or Windows to some definiton of usable, barely with Linux, not at all with iOS or Android. Mostly 15.6" or even smaller although AOC has a 22" (which I tested). Most of it is below full HD res to make it even worse (Asus has a 15.6" full HD, AOC a 16" and a 22" and that's about it, all others are some monkey res). Summary: garbage.
  2. The GeChic 1503H is 15", full HD and has HDMI input. If you are happy with this screen size, go for it. I am not happy with it :)
  3. 19.5" graphics tablet monitors. I carry a Sharp LL-S201A, there are other Chinese models. Expensive AF (I got mine via used off eBay with a best offer for USD 375, retails for double that) . But I used to be away for month-length periods and I need to work (which was got me interested in the Sentry in the first place even if circumstances changed now). This is the bees knees. The only infuriating part is the folding legs are only for raising it in as a graphics tablet -- a piece of rigid wire would have been enough to make it stand on its own. Oh well. Get the VESA stand for the YiyNova 15", 19", 22" tablet for a small and lightweight but good travel stand. If you want to travel with the stand and the monitor separately then get the 16mm length thumbscrews from this eBay seller. The Rocketfish RF-NBAC is possibly the lightest AC adapter you can find for it, N4 tip, forget the AC cable, it's dead weight, just get a direct C7-to-NEMA 1-15P adapter plug. Folding plugs are even better but I have no idea where to get them, I got ten from Chargesource before they folded ;) I bought ten because it was crystal clear Comarco is dying. Another travel stand can be made from the K&M 19685 LCD adapter and the right tripod. I tried the K&M 23150 it works but a little bit unstable. I was eyeing the Bexin M225S (eBay seller "so-pen" claims the ballhead is removable and it goes quite wide and it claims to hold up to 4kg which is unusual for small tripods) and might try it in the future but I literally need to weigh the benefit of being able to raise the monitor off the desk because the K&M 19685 is not exactly lightweight :/
  4. The AOC e2351F is wonderfully thin and light and even the stand is made to travel but the thinness and lightness comes with a price: if you don't protect it well, it can be broken from the backside as well, I did break the mechanically similar AOC 22" USB I mentioned above. I used the GearGrip Wide LCD to protect it more although the back is still open with that one somewhat. But the main concern, not just for this monitor, but in general, a 20"+ wide monitor simply won't fit in a carry on when the external dimensions of that is 22" max including wheels and handles. I tried a rolltop backpack because the rolltop allowed it to stuck out but gosh a roll top as a carry on is a miserable experience.
  5. The AOC M2060SWD would be great -- cheap, good screen size and resolution, has some digital input -- but it's very thick because of the built in AC adapter. https://goo.gl/photos/8wE211CfAZ2Uj9aF8 If you can live with this thickness, this is a good way to save hundreds of dollars, tho. The album shows the VESA adapter is about the same thickness, too although of course it is way smaller so when you play 3D tetris in your bag :) it fits much easier than a hulking 20" monitor with a bulge this thick.
  6. The HP L2201x is just a hair too big for carry on -- I used it with success when checked in. It doesn't have a VESA stand but I modded it by two part gluing one of these to it and then letting the included folding leg "trap" the other. Note that while some of the D-Link AC adapters will power it, they are not powerful enough and I did burn one out. Take care to use a 2.5A adapter with this one.
As you can see, I really, really tried everything :) monitors, AC adapters, stands, everything. I also tried more than a few backpacks, at the end I got Red Oxx to customize a Sky Train backpack for me, it fits the Sharp LL-S201A and the AOC M2060SWD to keep my options open. Otherwise, finding a carry on backpack which is able to house a monitor this big and also make a 14" laptop externally accessible... good luck! I couldn't. It's pretty damn near impossible. Some of the Magma DJ backpacks come close but not good enough.

Any questions?

The LG Ultrafine 22" 4K is not bad. While 4K at 22" might be too small to see, but at 150%-200% scaling, it's around 2560x1440 or 1920x1080, but it requires a USB Type-C to Displayport cable for GPU. This monitor will fit into suitcases with 4 wheels.

For 24" monitors, there are few 42-45L backpacks that are carry-on sized as well, but not cheap.

It's rare to see someone give a shit about traveling with monitors so I'll contribute my setup as well.

Left: Gechic 2501H - You can google it easily.
Center: Fushilang monitor from China - 17.3", IPS, 1080p, HDMI, can run off 5V-2A. Mounted on a camera tripod.
Right: Dell U2415 for size comparison.
Bag in front of Dell monitor: Coolbell 17.3" laptop bag/backpack convertible that fits both the Gechic and the Fushilang monitors.

As for fitting a 505mm wide display into a wheeled suitcase which must be less than 559mm including wheels, allow me to be sceptical. You have 54mm for case material, handles and wheels. I just can't imagine that. I have tried :) Not to mention that particular monitor is USB C only so there are only a very few select devices that work with it.

As for backpacks, do I look like someone who cares about price :) ? Spill the beans, please!

OK, so Gechic made a second 15" monitor good to know, but not big news. But the Fushilang FSL-173C, that's quite a thing, I presume http://mytaofocus.com/shop/item.php?id=542169887199 very interesting, I see it's 2016 -- by then I had the Sharp so I was less interested but still -- how did you find it? How does it mount? I mean, did you do some hack to allow a photo tripod attach or did it come with the right size threaded hole? Looking at https://img.alicdn.com/bao/uploaded/i3/129047571/TB2RriqX88lpuFjy0FnXXcZyXXa_!!129047571.jpg and your photo I suspect that hole in the bottom is 1/4" threaded proper? Finally, who are you to find a viable monitor that I didn't :D ?

The HP L2201x and the AOC e2351F are 12V. In fact, most non 110/220 LCD monitors are 12V. Except the Sharp LL-S201A because that, that is 19V.

You are right, my bad, 2 wheel luggage maybe, but going from 4 wheel (omni direction rolling) to 2 wheel luggage is like going 1080P after 4K, not ideal.

This is also why I'm experimenting with my own custom carry-on. I want 4 wheels and space for 24" monitor.

As for backpacks, do I look like someone who cares about price :) ? Spill the beans, please!

These 2 bags should fit 16:9 24" monitors, but neither is optimized for SFF desktop transportation (not that it should by design).

$190, Patagonia Headway MLC 45L, 22x16x9 in

$250, Tortuga Outbreaker, 22x14x9 in

Should or does? It's a big difference.

I meant carrying a desktop + monitor is prob the last feature on the designer's mind for these bags.

People who fly with a carry-on stuffed with desktop + monitors must be a very very small group. For regular moving (apartments / dorms, etc), you don't have the bag size restriction, there are a lot more options.

Tbh, I hope no one has to carry a desktop + monitor for flying, because it's annoying. However, if you have no other choice, there are ways. Since I'm one of those people, trying to make it less miserable with some speciality bags.

For example: I'm might meet other forum members for Computex, and we are prob bringing desktops (b/c we are SFF enthusiasts, any other sane group would just bring a laptop + drives). I don't want to shoulder a 20lb backpack with monitor and PC inside. Backpacks are great if you don't have to carry them for extended time with heavy loads. I rather use a suitcase with wheels.

And what I meant is that I tested a large amount of backpacks with the AOC E2351F and except for the Magma Rolltop none fits that. Which of course is cheating because that bag is not limited vertically. So what I meant to ask: did you actually test fitting a monitor inside a carry on?

I carried an M1, monitor and clothing in a big backpack once, not a very elegant solution.

I have flown with the M1 in a Duffle, LRPC prototype in a carry-on, Razer Core + 3 laptops in another carry-on. Dell U2415 in a check-in.

Rolling suitcase works for me, the only trick now is to get a 24" monitor into a 4 wheel carry-on suitcase, with space for some cloth, then I'm all set.

To get back to the duffle, I believe there is an optimal combination with the duffle and carry-on.

Combination M1:
- Personal Item (Tactick Duffle): M1, TKL Mechanical KB, Mouse, Cables, Battery banks
- Wheeled Carry-on Suitcase (Tactik Frequent Flyer 45L, still prototype stage): 24" monitors, HTC VIVE, Clothing + Shoes (like Vans, something low profile)

Combination PCX:
- Personal Item (Tactick Duffle): Clothing+ Shoes, Battery banks
- Wheeled Carry-on Suitcase (Tactik Frequent Flyer 45L, still prototype stage): 24" monitors, HTC VIVE, TKL Mechanical KB, Mouse, Cables

Basically, M1 in the duffle and the monitor in a suitcase. Alternatively, PCX and monitor into the suitcase, the duffle for cloth.

I have a call with a new shipping company tonight, if we get the shipping we need, maybe this weekend.

if not, I need to get the shipping worked out before we launch.

Nice !

What is the difference between the NCASE M1 Kit and the Laptop + Dan Case ?
The padding is a different size?

There is an extra padded divider for the Laptop + Dan Case / eGPU kit to separate the case from laptop(s).

Updated the website.
