Inside the Next Xbox: Project Scorpio Tech Revealed

Digital Foundary pegged it at $499.

If it does cost that little, I may actually buy a console for once. Maybe. They're still rather limited for my uses, but for that little for this much power, it might be worth considering at least.

The specs are about as impressive as what the 360 was when it releases (and FAR more impressive than the XBONE on release.) Specs are great, not they just need to nuke the god awful dashboard of the xbone.

Not sure why you some think this will be overpriced. Consoles are often sold at a loss. 3d0 was the last ultra high dollar console... 25 years ago.

I mean, I honestly view this the same as the PS4 pro. I already own the regular version, why would I bother upgrading if I don't own a 4k TV? At this point in the cycle I am more likely to just wait on the next complete generation.
New titles could run in an enhanced mode with better physics detailing on 1080p

what they are still using jaguar and pitcairn ?
the interesting bit is when he said, games will have 4k assets, and will be downsampled to 1080p for the xbone, so the scorpio will be their main focus, if the console isn't stupidly expensive, this might just be the thing that gaming needs for the norm to jump from 1080p over to 4k finaly.
although i still think games could be better, if richer worlds @1080p, than empty worlds @4k

My guess is the code base out there is using very specific functions that are limited to the pitcairin uarch. Going to Ryzen (which would have been smarter) would create incompatibilities (like going from CISC->ARM but on a more granular level)

Gonna skip over the snarky PC master race comments...

4k bluray, 50% more bandwidth and buffer than a ps4 pro, impressive in game 4k performance, dolby atmos.

Microsoft is not fucking around.
I'm sold.

It does look pretty good for a console. I'm a little confused about the choice of going with 12Gb of ram though. Seems like they should have just gone with 16

That makes absolutely no sense. They made the Titan to gouge idiots into buying another $1200 card.
@jfreud

Did Microsoft also update the SATA controller so replacing the spindle HDD with an SSD provides around the same increase as doing so in a PC made within the past 10 years?
SATA3 made it into the XBONE S, so it would be dumb if it was not in the Scorpio.

MS should have seriously spent the money developing this on developing some better 1st party studios. Just like with the whole Minecraft thing...two BILLION dollars instead of making a bushel full of some quality titles of their own.

I know the joke was made in OP about not having games but I seriously have a hard time seeing people being excited about this. THERE'S A REASON THE X1 HAS DONE AS BAD AS IT HAS. Releasing the same thing with faster hardware doesn't seem like the answer to me. The main complaint I've heard all generation long is that MS exclusives suck (what little there is) and Sony's don't.

So yeah, MS doesn't really have the games. If they did they'd have this generation...

I could care less about exclusives. I don't really care who made the game and if the 'other side' gets them too. It was the god awful dashboard and friend joining that has kept my xbone in the closet the last year.

Microsoft has no games, this is pointless....

I will disagree with this, while for us the Xbone has no games (as most exclusive titles are dual launched on PC) this is nothing but good news for us PC gamers and you should be able to see why.

As the owner of a One S and a 1080 screen it's hard to get excited about Scorpio.

says the guy who can't afford a titan....

Zing! Most here CAN afford these cards, but know there is better places to spend it.

How to piss off a nerd: Release a $500 console that plays 4k games as good as their $1500 pcs.

Does anyone here find it strange that cards 4x as powerful as a gtx 680 do not play 4k nearly as good as they do at 1080p?? Horay for optimization or lack therof.

What's the point of even buying one of those cards when like today, they announced a new one to replace the other that came out less than a year ago? Screw Nvidia & the way they shit on their fans.

If I'm properly reading your horrid grammar: Does anyone find it strange that our current gpu's are 4x as powerful as a 680GTX yet do not keep the same FPS at 4k resolutions as a 680GTX did at 1080P?

If my interpretation is correct, the answer is no. Now give me a game from the 680 era and put it on 4k with a pascal GPU and I'm sure that it will more than exceed a 4x improvement in FPS over the 680 at 1080p. Modern titles are way better looking than games of 2012, say Borderlands 2 and Spec Op's the line compared to Witcher 3, Watch Dogs 2 and Tomb Raider.

12GB? When you are making a item that will potentially sell in the millions you spec it to the minimum you can get away with. A $0.10 saving x 4 million....

I watched a documentary on the designing of the (iirc) 2013 Ford Mustang. They had project meetings discussing every single component in that car to make sure it was either necessary or they could get rid of it or make it a few cents cheaper.

As someone who enjoys the Kinect, I hope they remember to include the port for it.

Apparently they didn't - it's gone. I suppose you can probably go the adapter route like with the S, but the Kinect is apparently dead. I liked it, too.

We are talking 12 GB GDDR5 not system Ram so I guess the same reason that the Titan is not 16 GB.
Actually, 8 gb will be dedicated to games and 4 gb is needed for the OS. 8 gb is still enough for 4k gaming.

Why does a console OS need 4GB dedicated to it. Seems ridiculous.

What I am saying is that modern games are poorly optimized. Yes, they look better but not so much that they should suck up over 6 GB of vRAM and bog down with mid-high end cards in 1080p

I do not work for MS. You don't need to quote me if you were just thinking out loud. :p

After the Windows 8 styles OS of XBONE, it does not surprise me. It is giving the OS developers an extra 1 GB to work with. Lots of time spent on the dashboard so if it speeds things up, all the better. Still way more vram for games than the ps4 pro.

Saw this on Reddit, but the tweet was deleted.

Will the improved specs mean improved game performance across the board?

I am under the impression that this is not the case for PS4 pro, which kinda made the entire thing little beyond completely pointless IMO.

It should because the machine from what is being said will run "balls out" all the time the PS4 Pro even in boost mode only give you the full GPU/CPU clocks but not all the extra CU's

I find it impressive personally and plan on getting it day one. The idea of a ram drive for XB1 and 360 games to improve load times and textures has my interest. Don't see it happening but I hope the internal drive is user replaceable.

I was thinking it was system ram. totally forgot that number was also including an allotment for GPU

Then you don't understand what a HALO product is. The majority of people who buy TITANS aren't being shit upon. They know exactly what is going on. They know they are paying a PREMIUM to have the absolute best even if for a short period of time. That is it. However, the is a small subset of people who do buy TITANS based upon not knowing what a HALO product is and then get all butt hurt when their expectations, that are flawed, don't come true.
