My girlfriend asked what I want for my birthday, so I'm just doing some searching.

What are some good gaming monitors for under $250?

24" and up

You can get a C24FG70 right now for 279 bucks with promo code on newegg, offer should be valid for a couple more days.
Other alternatives I can see are all 144Hz TN panels (e.g. XG2401) or standard 60-75hz refresh rate IPS/VA displays.

I'm personally and Ultrawide guy. You can get an LG 29" ultrawide for roughly your budget. Some people preach high refresh rate monitors, but I've never personally experienced one.

I bought one of those Korean 1440 monitors just got it yesterday. Seems pretty nice for the money to me. It replaces a 10 year old Asus 20" monitor though so I wasn't to spoiled with anything newer. I paid 189 (168 with my 21 dollars eBay bucks) it was multi port version. I guess there are 3 versions at least. One that's just d dvi, one mutiport with vga, d dvi, and hdmi, and another with all those plus display port.

Any ultrawide in his budget is going to be low res and relatively small. I don't recommend that route at all. 21:9 below 34" diagonal and 3440x1440 tends to be a bad idea.

I bought Samsung S24E390HL (24" 1920x1080 display) last year to replace Asus MX239H. Even though it's ~150 € monitor it offer really great value for the money. AG coating is pleasantly light, back light uses DC dimming (i.e. flicker free), no cross hatching, PLS panel, does 75Hz and has really nice image quality for the price (in fact, in my opinion it's better than Asus MX239H).

I'm pretty sure that Samsung S24F350H is more or less the same display tech wise but with freesync.
