Studios Flirt with Offering Movies Early in Home for $30

LOL by 30-45 days later, it'll be free
the chinese are fast and would have a dvd rip copy out by then
cheaper and sooner is ideal
i would consider $19.99 on release night

i hate the theaters because one, it cost too much. two, if i pay for a movie, it means STFU and watch. and three, hate those immature kids talking and kicking the seats. that is pretty much why i do not go to the movies anymore
my home theater is my BFF :D

Some fucking asshole thought it was a good idea to bring her infant to the theater. Half of the movie was this baby cooing or crying and its mother loudly shushing it.

This RIGHT HERE is my biggest complaint about movie theaters, even more so than the price. Though for a movie like Beauty and the Beast it is to be expected little kids are going to be let in, it is completely unacceptable for a movie like john wick 2 to have a 3 year old brought in by some retard and allow the little demon to run around giggling and screaming and running in front of other people in their seats while jumping around. Theaters need to ban people from bringing children to any movie they are rated underage for. Movie is pg-13? No children under 13 PERIOD. Rated R? Nobody under 18 PERIOD. Doesn't matter if you came with your parent, older brother, older friend etc since you can't trust anybody to keep little monsters like that under control in a movie theater.

I would go out of my way to go to a theater that strictly enforced these rules. Alamo draft house is pretty close, but not quite there yet in their rules.

I give credit to the parents that take their kids OUT of the theater when they start making a fuss, but most are too stupid, lazy, and disrespectful to be bothered with what used to be common sense.

And don't get me started with piss eaters on their cellphones during the movie...

/soapbox.

I would pay $30 instead of going to the theater any day. Fricken hate people, their phones, and their Fricken kids too, $5 bucket of shitty-ass popcorn.. screw that.
At home i can eat great food, drink large amounts of alcohol pause to take a shit.. all while never leaving the house.
However, they can eat shit and die it they think I'm gong to pay that much for a movie thats been out for over a month.
I feel this will be the future though, all these streaming services offering exclusive content, movies. Theaters will go the way of the Drive-in if they do not do something different. By the way.. i loved the Drive-in... had some good times in my Ford EXP back in the day.. :)

How's nope grab ya. I cant tell you the last time I or my family paid for a movie. We usually find someone to borrow it from or netflix from my daughters last boyfriends account. I honestly don't watch Tv ever so if we had no TV that would be fine to.

Release day/time and first week or two is fine. It's a start people....for a family of 3-4+ it makes perfect sense if you have a good entertainment setup and you buy concessions.

The theater industry will likely campaign against this.

Not really sure how I feel about it, I sort of like getting out of the house and going to see a movie.

Unfortunately, unless it's IMAX the image quality sucks.

$20-25's feasible, but I'm not going to pay much more than the cost of actual movie theater tickets. It also better be some sort of high quality download with a time limit and not a stream. I want 1080p with surround sound.

If it was day one... Hell yes, saves me a tonne of money. Right now using costco a movie night ends up being 60-70.

Round trip to nearest theatre = 10 miles = $1.69 in gas.
Matinee ticket = $8.50.
Smuggling own drinks and snacks = free.

So seeing a movie opening weekend for me is $10.19 depending on gas price and how much I'm footing it in my car. Sorry, $30 for the privilege of streaming a movie to my home that is going to contribute to my bandwidth limit 30-45 days after release to theaters doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

Would I pay a little extra? Yes.

Would I pay $30? No fucking way.

I would pay $10. That's it.

Otherwise I just wait for free on HBO or Netflix or Amazon or whatever. If it's good enough, maybe a $5 stream from Amazon.

I would! *shrugs* For several reasons: 1) to avoid the crowd 2) I pay at least that when I go to the theater anyway 3) because I get to sit on my nice comfy couch in my underwear and watch a movie on my nice TV with my nice sound system! lol! :)

Even if there are plenty of dissenters, I bet once this gets underway most theaters will quickly go the way of video stores, music stores, and arcades. It probably won't affect specialty places like the Alamo Drafthouse, but I'd expect that cineplex in the corner of a dying shopping mall isn't going to survive any additional competition.

They've been dying slowly over the last 10 years and the only ones that will survive are the bar/restaurant types. It's sad, but Hollywood only has themselves to blame.

$30 if they give me a bluray to keep and it comes out within 1 or 2 weeks of the launch at the theater. Otherwise.... nah. If I've waited that long I can wait 4 months to rent it on bluray from Redbox for $2.

Some people like going to the theater. They like the big screen, the deafening sound system, and $10 popcorn. They also are probably looking for any excuse to get out of the house (hate the house, hate the kids, hate parents, hate spouse, etc). I am not one of those people unless my wife is in rage mode about something (usually involves Aunt Flo coming to visit).

Lately though, I have gone to a few movies thanks to T-Mobile giving away discounted tickets. $3, sure, I'll go see a movie. I don't need no stinkin' $10 popcorn, and I can smuggle in a water.

T-Mobile Tuesdays... check it out, people.

Aw, he's such a wonderful little consumer. Good boy !!!

:borg:

If he has 4 buddies over watching it in a Home Theatre, that means they all paid $10 to watch a movie in the comfort of their own home, where they can eat/drink whatever they like, pause it when they want, etc. I fail to see how that is a bad deal. Only being $30 would be an even better deal. The current problem in their marketing is waiting 30-45 days. Not sure they will cut back that time any significant amount though.

The value varies depending on where/when you go see a movie and with how many others.
If it's one person going to a matinee or 2nd run show by themselves, it probably sounds like a colossal rip-off. Especially if you eat first/afterward and don't buy a $5 fountain drink.
However if you're buying tickets for a nightly showing for family of 3+ (plus any potential snacks or drinks) it suddenly becomes a lot more appealing.
Even a date night for 2 people can hit $30 pretty quickly in many markets.

$20 with a quality guarantee, yes.

$30 only if I get to keep a copy of it.

Why go through the trouble. Just release the movie on Blu-ray and VOD 30-45 days after theatrical release and get it done with. Most "film" is distributed and presented digitally these days, anyway.

you know what kills me?

the length of time between the theatrical release and the Blu-ray release.

Resident Evil was released in the theatres january 27.

blu-ray and dvd may 16?

what the fuck?

It is a good amount of time to just forget what movies came out and they end up on the 'well whenever i get to it' list.

The release window has been getting shorter over the years. It's typically 4-5 months these days while I remember it being 6-8 months a few years ago. You could sometimes wait upward of 10-12 months during the VHS era, though that was understandable since VHS was harder to produce in mass quantities.

This would be awesome! I wish this had been around years ago. I would have paid $50... maybe even more under certain circumstances.

Those that think this is a ripoff clearly do not have children or live in remote areas where a theater isn't in town. Remote people spend hours driving, gas costs, and then ticket and concession costs $100+ for a couple.

My wife and I use to go to movies every week, then kids came and we didn't go for 7 years because we couldn't... we would gladly of paid $30 to enjoy a movie at home... it's less expensive then going to theater and paying a sitter $15-20/hr. And as the kid count grew and they became older I can't go to moves for under $100, toss in a basic dinner and it's $200 for a trip to go see a kids movie.

It's a fucking movie, pay a premium to see it in a theater, or just wait. I mean christ why did we turn into a society that waits in line over night just so we can have something the very first day instead of a day or two later?

Yes and the irony is those people who make that choice (whether willingly or forced) to stay away from the "wonders of modern society" are always the ones who bring up arguments like this "why can't I enjoy all the wonders of modern society in my home away from modern society" , I'm speaking tongue in cheek of course, but hopefully my point is clear.

Or you could just wait and watch it on Bluray/netflix/whatever.

You speak as if you are a complete loaner... I assume you don't have kids, friends or have any social engagements... You know in a social world certain events, movies, activities have social connections.. people talk, kids engage at school over moves.... try to be the dad who doesn't take your 11 year old boy to Star Wars when all his friends have seen it twice....

The world is more then you.

Heh, $30. Reminds me of Comcast pay per view. $4.99 for SD movie and $5.99 for HD. For less than $30 you can buy the blu-ray 4-6 months after the movie is released these days.
I usually wait on most movies to rent them. I'll buy the occasional movie if I think I'll watch it again. They need to factor the blu-ray release to the cost of renting it. This i why i'd want it to be currently in theaters before I'd consider it.

When it became an option.

Day 1, 4k w/ HDR available with a 24 hour watch window and you can watch it as many times as you want in 24 hours? 30 bucks? Yep, I'd do that.

Day 45, 1080p with a single view? 30 bucks? Fuck off.

$30 I could possibly do if simultaneous release with theaters. A month later, no lol, sit down with your stupid idea.

This is kinda where I am at. For my wife and I to go to the movies together is $30 in tickets, and another $20 in concessions. I'd pay $30 for a same day, high quality (4k) copy. Same cost as the movie tickets, but I get to eat cheap microwaved popcorn, drink a beer, and take my pants off.

But after 30-45 days, fuck no. At that point, if it's a movie I really want to see, I'll wait for the blu-ray and just buy that and then I get to keep it, and I get all the extras.

Seriously you all just some grumpy old people. Me and my friends go to theaters all the time.e and rarely issues.

I don't have any issues with the theater, but it's gotta be something I really want to see. When it's $50 for the wife and I to go, that's a high cost of admission for 2 hours of entertainment. If I can spend less and be more comfortable at home, I'm all about it.

The price doesn't bother me for a second. It's the month or two gap. If it's something I want to see bad enough to pay that much for a single sitting, I'd rather just so see it around its release. If I'm willing to wait 30-45 days, what's another month to get a high quality physical copy that is mine forever?

I live in NYC, my options are pay $22 for a new release at a decent theater or $15 at the shithole dick theater

Went to see Beauty and the Beast opening night in a 400ish seat theater last week

Here's my experience:

Seats are packed so closely together and incline of the theater so little that a tall guy two rows ahead of me was blocking my view of the screen, Tall guy in front of me blocked a quarter of the screen too.

A fight broke out in the back of the theater about 30 minutes into the movie, people were hauled off

Some fucking asshole thought it was a good idea to bring her infant to the theater. Half of the movie was this baby cooing or crying and its mother loudly shushing it.

The lady two seats over from me was singing, loudly, out of key, and out of sync, to every one of the disney songs

Theaters can die, please

The above is why I try to reserve seats at AMC 84th St. 6 whenever I can. Recliner seats, Atmos sound, and (so far) no bad experiences w/other people.

Surprisingly, the theaters at Times Square are actually pretty decent (in terms of people behavior -- lots of tourists). Pretty well maintained, too.

It's only when I go to other theaters that issues pop up from time to time, like the seat kickers (and the kickers, sorry to say, are always neckbeards who have not progressed from the infant stage where baby kicks are considered cute. Heck, even the ghetto bangers have better manners at the movies).

If its going to be a good movie I'm going to buy the BR anyway so that is $25, just sell me the BR after 30 days for $40, I'm going to spend that much on tickets alone anyway. The only time I go to a theater is when my family is on vacation and it's raining.

My family is waiting for Beasts to come out next week, we shouldn't have to wait that long for a BR release when they have been streaming it for 2 weeks already, asinine.

Theaters are not going to get my money unless its a big IMAX with Dolby Atmos and recliners and a new Avatar or similar level of movie so you may as well make a bit on me by offering it on BR sooner. Call it early access BR and then drop the price later.

Its hard enough to get newer movies on amazon, google and shit.. this after what feels like big time gaps and stuff.
Honestly, so many times my excitement wanes a lot, and they get less chance of getting my money (I don't currently go to the cinema at all due to family situations BTW)
They will never pull this off, let alone at 30$

feels more like desperate begging than a genuine flirt

"see, see!?! I got a boob job just for you, come back to meeeee!"

Interestingly enough, I've only been to a movie theater in NYC once, but it was this one. I was vising a friend who lives right at the corner where Broadway, Amsterdam, and 71st all come together. We went to go see Deadpool there since was a short walk and it was cold as fuck that weekend. It was the imax theater, which was massive... I've never been in a movie theater anywhere near that big. No problems or disruptions though, we had a good time.

EDIT: Scratch that, it was the AMC a couple blocks in the other direction. Either way, for the amount of people there, I was surprised that nobody was a dick.
