Has anyone tried this x79 board? To good to be true?

id pass, i just bought an asrock extreme4 x99 from newegg for $126 shipped after a $20 rebate. I dropped in a $115 Xeon 2620v4 without having to do a bios update

I'd avoid it like the plague, the screw holes don't match standard ATX, PCI on x79 is stupid, there's a big sticker saying C602 - that's the server chipset not x79, its not got 5.1 surround built in, only 1 Lan port, no additional sata controller. There's probably more but I can't be arsed to go any further. Whilst checking features I ended up on the asus page for the P9X79 LE - one of their lower end x79 boards and it has plenty more to recommend it than that piece of garbage on amazon.

I have no idea where those boards come from, I think they are some custom Chinese layout using old stock C602 chipsets to take advantage of the burgeoning secondhand market for V1/V2 Xeons.
I'd avoid it, even an old Gigabyte UD3 or Asrock Extreme4 will be better.

This board is awesome. It's so fast it's rediculious, and 100% stable without issue at all. 32gb server ram for $40 and a $65 10core xeon QS cpu. No SLI support, so eh. But everything else works flawlessly. I initially tested it with my E5 2660v2 and it worked great, but there was no SLI happening. Still, everything felt snappier. Another guy got one to try too and has reported no issues. Since the x79 boards are fetching $400+, I would call this a decent alternative if you want to toss a xeon and server ram in if you don't need SLI.

asus x79 sabertooth is $479, there's another for $405. The rest on amazon are out of stock. Ebay has very limited stock as well, and lots are used and still very expensive.

Well, keep us updated on how long it lasts, you are a braver man than I.

Loaded up and running with an E5 2650L v2 QS cpu. everything is cranking. rock solid stability and no issues at all. been pounding it with different tests and it hasn't skipped a beat. I love hte ddr3 ecc ram, it's so cheap.

Here's the sys info: https://hastebin.com/cumoqixojo.sql

I'm going to start folding or something on it, just to push it for a week and see what happens. Worst case is it dies, but I really don't see that happening. Overall it was very easy to set up. It uses mATX holes, so there isn't much support towards the edge which I don't love. No on board optical audio, so I'm going to get a pcie card. I like the first slot being a pcie 1x, so you can load two video cards and not lose the ability to add something else.

Crap, I wish it had more than one PCI slot. Some of us out there still have perfectly working PCI audio cards, and in my case, running a "vintage" DAW setup that uses PCI cards for DSP. That's my main reason for dropping my X99 build and going with a Ryzen system with 2 PCI slots. *shrugs*
