Netflix Ditches Five-Star Ratings in Favor of a Thumbs-Up

I don't mind the thumb up/down but the average should be turned into the 5 star system. just yes/no does not give enough information

This is probably more for Netflix's benefit than ours.

You care HOW MUCH you enjoy something, but why would Netflix care about that?

All they care about it is, would you watch it, yes or no. If you watched it, that's a win. If you wouldn't watch it, that's a fail.

We see this with great TV shows that are cancelled, in favor of crappier ones that are cheaper. If the 5 star show costs $6 million, but a 2.5 star reality show costs $600K per episode to make, the former will likely be cancelled, because with it not on air you'll still probably end up watching the mediocre reality show which is WAY more profitable. Bad for the audience, great for the execs selling the content to provide the cheapest crap possible that you're still willing to watch.

Amy-Haters, enjoy being soulless.

She's hardly perfect. And she has never said that she is. I'm not. Are you?

Yet another stupid Netflix decision - the star rating system is superior in many respects and the entire "like" or "dislike" shit irks me to no end already anyway. As for Iron Fist, it's weak from start to finish, with terrible dialogue, and it's remarkable how such supposedly intelligent people running a world mega-corporation always end up being such stupid fucking people when it really matters.

But then again, they are just Human so, there ya go.

I give up about Amy Schumer. Comparing her to Mencia is ludicrous. But I'm not going to argue any further.

I'm done.

Moving on.

We're also not all entertainers vying for public approval for our careers, then blaming the audience for our mistakes. Your comparison is invalid.

And the fact that you call people soulless for disliking a comic speaks for itself. It's okay, dude. I'd fuck her, too. But white knighting on a message board ain't gonna make that happen. Just grab a ham sandwich and an old joke and hang around Lena Dunham long enough and you're in like Flynn.

eh? I figured there'd be a consensus on here that Amy Schumer is a trash tier comic whose routines can't seem to go more than a few minutes without reference to her being a whore. I'm surprised.

I haven't bothered to watch ALL of her material - but from what I've seen... I just figured the above was a foregone conclusion to be reached by us nerds.

I first became aware of Amy Schumer on FNC ironically enough. She was a regular on Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld in the show's earlier days, long before she became the star she is now. I know she has natural wit, because she was very funny in the freeform roundtable discussions. I used to say back then that she was the only female comic who could make me laugh, as I generally do not find women funny at all.

She was mostly apolitical on the show, even when the topics were political in nature. Yet with fame she fell into the SJW nonsense, as every celebrity apparently feels they must.

Netflix rating system is only based on your account and your past ratings. So if you share your account and user with someone that rates high romantic English movies set on the 1800 s.. that type of stuff and related will start getting a high red star count.. if the same person rates low your b horror movies that is going to rate low in red stars. I have to agree.. 5 stars is too much to think about... I am not interested in thinking when watching tv.. personally i would have cut it to 3 stars or a turkey 1 star and 2 stars.

Because falling into that nonsense is exactly what brings them fame. She's the perfect example of that. It's not acceptable to *not* like her anymore; never mind the fact that she's been not funny for like, half a decade.

This is part of the "everyone's a winner" mentality. Thumb up or down does not "discriminate" between movies/shows which are fair, okay, nice, and fantastic. Stars (or any other granular system) would do so.

Netflix, for shame!

isn't the iron fist character suppose to be asian?

instead this guy looks like justin timberlake.

No he is a fucking white guy. SJWs are just acting like retards (like they always do). Making him a white guy like he is in the comics they say is "cultural appropriation" and using the "white savior trope" but if he was an Asian martial artist it would be a racist stereotype. There just is no pleasing these assholes. All these dickheads crying about needing diversity in comics have never read them. There already is an Asian martial artist named Shang Chi the master of kung fu in comics. Iron Fist is white and it would be stupid to change it. Read the damn comics before judging something you have no idea about.

Now if you want to comment on him being a Justin Timberlake look alike, again I say read the fucking comics. He is a rich preppy white guy. I think he should have been more ripped then he is but other than that he does pretty much fit the bill.

it depends on what era of ironfist you look at.. they picked the era of the comic where ironfist was a westerner, before and after that ironfist was an asian. while people aren't happy about it it's the only ironfist that actually has a legitimate origin story line they can use, the other ironfist's don't.. basically ironfist follows the same concept that deadpool does where the hero isn't the same person over it's history, deadpool dies and comes back multiple times as different people and ironfist is the same. but besides that they actually did a really good job with the show and it's definitely worth watching whether or not some ones mad about the main character race choice.

In the current time line he is white. It is a white guy and a black guy that are best friends that come from totally different walks of life. When ever an Iron Fist dies, another is trained to take on the dragon and upon defeating the dragon gets the mantle of Iron Fist. For centuries it was Asians but there were 3 white guys. If they want to have a series that focuses on one or more of Danny Rand's predecessors or successors that would be cool but not in the Defenders time line. It would be even cooler if they did an immortal weapons series showing all the people who do not read comics that Danny is just one of seven bad asses and that he is not even close to being the baddest of them. In a series like that they could even tell the stories of all the predecessors of all the immortal weapons up to the current ones.

yeah agree.. it's also something they could fit into the story later on as well as they get deeper into the character but i doubt they'll do it sadly.

"Finn Jones trained for four hours daily before filming began, two hours of martial arts training and two hours of weightlifting. For his physical look, Jones said that he did not want to bulk up, he wanted a very "toned and athletic" look rather than look like a "muscle-bound gym rat"."

that was in the imdb trivia stuff and i agree with his choice. while the muscle look in the comic is cool, in the real world it's actually pretty bad since your movements become really stiff and unnatural looking when it comes to martial arts.

I feel like this is going to go over poorly and get reverted in short order.

What's going to happen to the star-rating though? I still use that to determine whether something is worth watching...

Amy is not remotely funny to me and just a shill for Old Navy..........

I hate to say it but that really isn't anything special with comedians. A number of the more famous ones have been accused of stealing jokes. I have even found a few myself where I watched something by one person that was a nobody doing a comedy special, then years later heard a more famous person make the same joke.

Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, Dane Cook. Carlos Mencia, Denis Leary had all been accused of stealing jokes just to name a few.

About Amy Schumer: Whatever. Like her or don't. I honestly don't care. And I never meant to cause such a kerfuffle about it. There are many things that I don't like, Rap "music," for an example. I can't stand it. So I don't listen to it. But I don't go around complaining about it.

I totally give up.

On this topic, please just leave me alone, and out of it.

This is a horrible idea. So now a 3* show is the same as a 4* show. Sorry, but that's not useful.

Okey dokey. You take care now.

And yet you still keep coming back to white knight for her.

How the hell did this thread about the Netflix rating system end up being about some female comedian that is going through an unfunny spell, and her white knights?

Didn't know this was such a hot topic.

I asked because I've seen him as both a white guy and asian but wasn't sure which was the "original" version.

as far as the rating thing goes i'm fine with it, i've always used IMDB to check actually ratings since i'm not a fan of the 5 star rating system.. far to easy for really bad shows/movies and ok'ish ones to all end up clumped up in a 3 star rating. the other problem you had is people 1 star rating things to keep those type of movies from being suggested to them even though the movies were actually good.

i have no problem with her wanting to be a comedian and going out and doing it, congrats to her for doing it. i just personally don't find her style of comedy funny.

Deadpool is different people over time? Am I missing something or did you just pick one of the few people that has never happen to?

There are different Robins over the years, there are different Green Lanterns, Captain America was replaced by the winter soldier. Ironman gets replaced by the iron patriot. there are a few versions of Venom. Some people are just the person in the suit or with the power at that point in history. but some are just that person.

as for the actual topic here. I honestly am fine with that. I do not trust people today to have anything close to a valid opinion about anything. They will jump on a hate train or bash something for no good reason. I am 12 episodes through Iron Fist and have no idea why people were saying this is the worst Marvel series to date. Many games and movies as of late have been this way, everyone hates it and I think it is ok. Or everyone loves it and I disagree and find it ok only.

when it comes to trying to find movies that I want to watch I trust myself only. When trying to find movies that are close to similar I think a 3 point system is good. You like it, don't like it or have no opinion. If you like a movie and others like it then if there are other movies they like then you might like those also. Doesn't matter if you would have given it 4 stars and they gave it 5, you would still enjoy watching it.

same goes for something like rubber mentioned above, if you enjoy the movie you enjoy it. Doesn't matter if it is a 3 star or a 5. The stars are not meant to represent the quality of the movie but what if you like it or not. So Rubber can be 5 stars and that doesn't mean it is the best movie ever made, that just means that you enjoy it. The fact that so many people don't seem to even understand a star system means they need to dumb it down for people because hate, dislike, neutral, like and really like are to hard for people to understand.

that said, I stopped rating movies and shows somewhere around 6200 ratings. I don't really care anymore about how they rate stuff as I haven't found the ratings or suggestions to mean much over the years.

She's a joke stealer. Because of that, she's not funny. Are you going to say that Carlos Mencia was funny even though he was joke stealing? Her "Leather Special" is full of jokes that she stole from other comedians.
FWIW, I went back and watched it again. It was 38 minutes of "my vagina", as usual, a 5 minute speech about how we need more gun control, like 8 minutes of her turning around, bending over and grabbing her ankles, and then finishing by saying "fuck Bradley Coopers skinny girlfriend because she'll never be fat and put pictures of herself in her underwear on the internet like I did".

She didn't steal any jokes this time because there were no jokes to be found.

Meh, Netflix's rating system was stupid before - now.. it's... lazy too? Always hated the fact that you start watching a movie, get about 10 minutes in and then ditch it because it was crap and then, oh wow! movies that I might like because I watched that movie! which I didn't like. :p

Community based rating is better than some algorithm telling me that i might like something based on the past movies i rated well (or poorly). That kinda works for music? but... not so much for film. I may disagree with the community but at least it's based on something a bit more tangible.

Schumer like many other hollywood liberals, forget they are an entertainer... despite their political views or worldly views... they sell entertainment. So, if you start catering to a minority audience, you cannot expect that path to be easy or profitable. This usually happens when they become successful and start having illusions of grandeur and start to... "keep it real"... so to speak. But unless you're only going to cater to roughly 500 counties in the US, mainly NY and LA county... you're going to find your liberals views not well received.

As for the Iron Fist show... Its pretty good. I was a huge comic book fan when i was a kid, and Power Man and Iron Fist were one of my favorite comics. The show does a good job with the character of Danny Rand, i think Finn Jones does an ok job, but he's too small. And while i realize its based on a comic book, some of the plot lines are just stupid. The fight scenes are lame for the most part, and some of the kills are awesome, but hey its based on a story of a guy who's hands glow and can punch through steel. Its entertaining enough to keep me watching, but its no Daredevil.

This is a horrible idea. So now a 3* show is the same as a 4* show. Sorry, but that's not useful.
In my eyes, anything that was less than 4 stars in the past is now going to be a thumbs down. I wonder how Netflix rationalizes that.
