Well I jumped on board the hype train and snapped up a 1080Ti, upgrading from a Zotac 1080 AMP Extreme. I tested out the last two games I remember running a FPS counter on and I am getting the exact same performance; the games were Gears of War 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider. I uninstalled my drivers, ran driver cleaner, did a fresh install and I am stumped. Is it possible I am limited by my 4790K i7? I could always reinstall my 1080 and play video card reviewer this weekend and see what happens. My monitor is an Acer Predator 1440P G-Sync monitor.

probably not. If you have it overclocked to what it can do best, you should be fine.

I don't run it overclocked it sits a 4Ghz all day; haven't felt the need to overclock it since I've never had a game drop below 70 fps.

I doubt it will be a bottleneck at 1440P but it cloud with 1080ti. I would sure overclock it little with 1080ti. I am pretty sure you will see better results. If I am not mistaken those should do 4.5ghz easy. Especially since you have a gsync monitor.

It depends the games. I play war thunder and Natural Selection 2 and they are heavy CPU bound on my 980TI. War thunder is CPU and GPU bound at 120hz.

Other games are similar but *new* games are not as bad due to multi threading.

I would OC your 4790K to 4.5GHz. That should be pretty easy. The best you can do is a 5GHz Kaby which is only 10% faster or going 6/8 core for threaded games. It all depends on what games you play. If you are at 4.5Ghz i wouldnt bother upgrading unless you know what games you play and figure out if its truely worth it.

If I were you I would wait for Skylake X since those might OC better and you might find 4.5Ghz SKylake X which would be pretty good for single thread and great for multithreaded games.

I am CPU limited in some games with my Titan X at 2560x1440, but you should still be seeing a noticeable improvement over a 1080 in maximum and average frame rate...

In Gears of War 4 playing Horde Mode my fps min is 95, max 105 and average is right around 100 depending on the action at the time on both the 1080 and 1080Ti so I'm not sure what I'm missing here.

Dont the 4790k get the automaticturbo boost to 4,4 GHz even without OC? Mine isn't OCed, and it goes to 4,4 with just turbo enabled in BIOS.

As always it depends on the game resolution, and refresh rate. I have a 980ti and my 4770k and probably memory are my bottleneck in FO4. 90% of the time even with a 1080ti I'm sure that my cpu wouldn't be a bottleneck on my 3440x1440 display. On my occulus rift I'm sure that would be a different story.

Its not like whats on the market is that much faster than haswell. Definitely smaller than the difference between a 1080 and 1080ti. I'm sure that the upgrade would be a nice improvement a vast majority of the time.
